Hi there,
I'm not sure if this group is still active, but thought I'd post and
see. I'm a breastfeeding mom who is using amenoreal lactation as
birth control. I understand after 6 months, ovulation is possible.
Anyone else care to share their experience with Billings while
breastfeeding?
Thanks,
mcibrahim
I've been charting for a year and my doctor gave me info on the
billings method. I recently had my first time--VERY unplanned. I'm
very worried I could have gotten pregnant. I had my period for 10
days, then had sex on day 11 (we actually didn't finish because we
panicked after a couple of minutes), followed by 2 more dry days.
Then I got EWCM (I only check externally). I've had EWCM for days 14-
19 (today). This is very unusual for me. I usually only get any cm
at all for 2, maybe 3 days.
Is this a sign of pregnancy?
Or does it look like I haven't ovulated?
Thank you for any input!
Does anyone get a white, lotiony, still-stretchy (though not nearly
as much as fertile), flem-like CM after ovulation??? I'm positive
I ovulated, but I'm getting this type of CM, and when you rub it, it
kind of feels grainy...
Hi. My name is Michelle Morgan. I am married to Brad Morgan and we
live in Michigan. He's 22 and I'll be 22 in July. We don't have any
children, and although we would like to have kids soon, we would like
to postpone pregnancy until he graduates college and we are somewhat
financially stable. I have been charting sympto-thermally for a
month now, however because I work nights sometimes my temps are
highly irregular. I am thinking that I would like to rely more on
the Billings method - or using that as a cross-check. I don't know
(?). I am confused about my CM still. Like just after I ovulate, I
have a lotiony CM with a 2 inch or so stretch. Mind you I have a 4-
day period of 5"+ stretch clear CM just before ovulation. Is this CM
normal and does it fit into the Billings method? Also, if you don't
mind, I'll probably be more "lurking" for a little while rather than
answering. I have no idea what I am doing let alone posting
responses for others; I sincerely hope you don't think that's rude,
but I mainly want to learn right now. It is nice to meet you all.

I know this message is kinda late,, but i just wanted to add my
input..breastfeeding can wreak havoc on ur menstrual cycle.

Hello all. My name is Katie and I am married to Bryan. I am 20 and
he is 21. We have a 7 month old MacKenzie. We are considering
having another child and getting pregnant maybe next Fall or Winter.
Currently I am not on any pills because of the cramping it gives me.
I usually rely on CM to let me know when I am most fertile.
Anyways I am hoping to learn more ways of fertility awareness.

i too have just had a baby 4 months ago. i got a
period exactly 6 weeks after she was born then i got
another one a week after the first one, but i have not
had one since. i have been checking my mucus daily
and found that at the beginning of last month i
ovulated but then never got a period this month.
thinking maybe we were pregnant again i took a test
and it came out negative. what to do? is this common
to get a period, even two and then not to get one
again. i am also breast feeding my child.

Hi. I used the Billings method for about 6 months before I tried
(and suceeded) to get pregnant. I had my first baby in August and
and began charting again seven weeks after the birth. Well, I have
had the VERY stretchy mucus EVERY DAY since then...I am nursing but I
don't want to rely only on that. I'm sure that my body is still "out
of whack" but I'm not sure what to do.... Help!!
Hi,
If you cant chart your mucus you could try the sympto-thermal
method, which means charting your waking temp every day. And there
are such devices such as persona which you might be interested in
looking at using either alone or along with something such as
charting temps etc.
Hope that helps you

Hi,
I know several people who have been using persona and nfp charting
for over 5 years now and they've found it really helpful. Im relying
more on my charting than my persona however so far i have not had
conflicting results. I definately wouldnt use persona on its own,
although i know one person who's used it for 5 years alone and she's
never had a problem. For me its more of a backup and when both my
chart and persona say ive ovulated its gives a bit more reasurance.
Good luck with the wedding!!!!!!!!
I was looking at using it too,,,. I am getting married on friday and me and my future husband are going to be using billings. But I have changed my mind since talking to a few people. My friends sister used persona,.. but was caught out twice with it ( two gorgeous little boys but nevertheless) and my other friend who has always used the billings method, and has been married for 5 years, purchased a persona in the hope that it would be more straightforward then the daily observations, her experience was that persona conflicted with Billings as it indicated different dates for ovulation ?
However if it was really that dodgy, I don't think it would be as popular a product as it seems to be and its been on the market in Ireland and the UK for about 5/6 years now.
But in my opinion your I think your better sticking with one or the other, by all accounts and from talking to friends who are using nfp, The Billings method is pretty fail safe as long as you learn to observe your mucus and vaginal sensations closely and consistantly, and even better, you can also talk to a real live person should you have questions or concerns.
Good Luck

Hi,
Persona is a contraceptive/fertility device. Its a small hand held
monitor which works by telling you when your fertile or not. It
works by monitoring the hormones in your urine through 8 test stick
which you carry out a month. When the monitor shows a red light you
are fertile and when it shows a green your not. Alot of NFP teachers
suggest using it as well as doing all your charting etc. If you want
to know more the persona website is http://www.persona.org.uk/
Thanks

Thanks a million, this helps so much ! I think I have the same mucus show as you , sorry for being so familiar ! so the confirmation that the change is the most important when it accurs helps me.. I was trying myself in knots.
You are very kind to get back so quickly. I am usually regular. But right now I am all over the place due to stress( weddings are bloody hard work ! )and shift work and a consequent irregular sleeping pattern.. but I am hoping when things calm down it will be a little more static again.
Congratulations on the two little ones...you must be a busy woman.. so I really appreciate you taking the time to reply.
I will definitely check out the group you listed.. so hope to talk to you there.
Best,

Congratulations on your upcoming wedding! Right now I'm charting symtothermal and BOM for this cycle. I'm breastfeeding my two little one infrequently throughout the day and I have PCOS, which makes me have long cycles with lots of ambiguous mucus, and no ovulation.
Basically, what you are looking for is any *change* in mucus. For example, I have a constant, white, opaque, tacky mucus, but not a lot. When it changes, it becomes more lotion-y and slightly more yellow, then it changes to the clear-er, egg white, stretchy type. It never gets totally clear, it always still looks white.
From my understanding, the quality of the mucus is more important than the color or quantity. It needs to be stretchy to be more fertile.
Are you cycling regularly? Have you tried taking your basal body temps to see if you are actually ovulating?
This list isn't very active. I haven't heard from anyone in a looooooong time. But I do know of some others who use BOM and other mucus-only methods, and we all "hang out" at Mary's NFP board. I invite and encourage you to take a look and join us! It's a great bunch, very friendly, and with LOTS of charting experience, in all kinds of situations. Here's the link:

Hi,
I hope this group is still active, I am getting married in 4 weeks
and myself and fiance will be using the billings method. To be blunt,
I am having a lot of difficulty understanding when I am fertile and
when I am not.
I have monitored and observed my mucus, and never seem to have what I
could describe as a dry day ...am I meant to take this in literal
sense ?
Please excuse the next bit if it seems a little direct or crude. But
there is only a slight change in the colour and makeup of my mucus
throughout the month, but I always have discharge which is a yellowy
white colour or otherwise clear when changed. Does this sound
normal.... and what does it indicate ..fertile infertile ??? And I
have a massive problem locating the begining of my fertile period and
peak day as the clear or eggy discharge seems to be of the same
consistancy from the minute it appears ?
HELP this is very frustrating ? and thanks in advance for any advice.

hi
i am new to all of this.. as i am getting married in a few months and
my future husband and i have decided to rely on the billings method
for family planning.. or as for now, birth control.
i think i have got most of it down, but there are some confusing
times each month that i can't figure out. (sorry to be graphic, but
here goes...)how exactly do you tell the difference between a dry
feeling and a wet feeling? i know the dry days pretty well, but
there are some days that seem to fall in between. those days i feel
dry, but there may be dampness on my underwear. or, sorry again,
wiping may be free of mucous, but i may feel like something "let
down" during the day.
i am finding it hard to distinguish when exactly my peak day has
passed. AAGGHH! can anyone help me here??
thanks

Yours is the first message I've seen in a long while. Personally, I use sympto thermal, although technically, not now, b/c I am nursing my 2.5 y/o DD and my 7 m/o DS.
Mostly, I frequent Mary's NFP message board at Delphi Forums. Have you been there? There are both sympto thermal users there and mucus-only NFPer's, and it's a wonderful source of support.

Greetings Esther! I am a 31 year old mom of four. The chart I use is from
couple to couple league: You can find the chart at
www.ccli.org/free/index.shtml. It is a free download. It may not be
exactly what your looking for but it has been my favorite so far. Although
I don't agree with a lot of couple to couple doctrine, they have a ton of
information that is helpful. They more you understand, the easier it is to
use NFP. Hope this is helpful.

Dear Fellow Billings Beauties!
I am 24 and have just gotten married! We are using the Billings as
well as condoms. I have the billings method book but I want to order
the chart that has the special stamps on it. Any suggestions? I saw
one for 20 bucks on the Family of the Americas site but I wanted to
make sure that this is the same method used in Billings. Thanks!

Hi!
I am Mei, 26 year old, a mom of two kids (1, 3 in about 3 months). We live
in Oslo in Norway (I'm originally from Finland).
I am still nursing and got my periods back after quitting to nurse at
nights. After the return of the periods I've got pretty normal cycles, which
have surprised me -cycles seemed to have got shorter too (I used to have
long ones 36-40 days, now the last ones have been 31 and 29 days), anyone
experienced shorter cycles after child births??
Anyway, I've been interested in natural family planning already for awhile.
I started charting after starting to bleed after my first birth, but the
charting ended soon, because we got pregnant ;-) We took it quite relaxed
and were sort of prepared for a suprise. The fault wasn't in the method but
in our lack of knowledge. Now looking back to my charts I know that we did
the "mistake" by not waiting for three days after the "peak symptoms".
Now while breast feeding our second child I started seriously reading about
the method and wanted to know all about. The site of "Family of the
Americas"
http://www.familyplanning.net/ and the site of the Billings gave me the
information I needed and I ordered the book "Love and Fertility" from the
"Family of the Americas" and it's been helpful in learning about the method.
I recommend it, it has clear and simple language and very clear pictures of
the different types of mucus (method is based only on mucus) and chart maps
and neat stickers to it!
Now I've had four normal cycles (and am fertile right now!) after I started
bleeding and I think I've got pretty good hang of my mucus patterns. During
the first cycles I was quite nervous and didn't feel confident at all
learning about this, but the carefulness and patience we practised in the
beginning has been worth it, as we feel much more confident in recognizing
and using the "free" days now -each mentrsuation feels like an
accomplishment! ;-)
Since the cycles got shorter I've been a bit extra careful in interpeting
the BIP (basic infertile pattern) before the ovulation, because after
periods there hasn't been many (if at all!) dry days and the peak day seems
to be coming closer towards the periods. In general I seem to have quite
continues discharge (due to the nursing probably), but the mucus comes
clearly more clearer and stretchy closer to ovulation and then turns bak to
sticky and cloudy.
Anyone else who's been struggling with continuous discharge and recognizing
repeated strechiness? I notice there is that highly stretchy and clearer
mucus closer to the peak, and then later in the cycle there appears this
thick, cloudy but also quite stretchy mucus. This mucus however seem to
brake easily after stretching it a couple of times whereas the fertile mucus
doesn't brake after repeated stretching . I think I read about this in the
Billings site, and this has been the way to distinguish the fertile stretchy
mucus.
Ok, maybe this will do for the introduction :-)
I am also with Fertility Awareness (quite active list, but not perhaps so
much discussion on the mucus?) and NFPMoms lists (very quiet). After reading
the archives of this list I was happy to realise that this seems to be a
place to discuss mucus widely and openly! ;-)
Looking forward to fruitfull mucus discussions! ;-)
