WHO’S AFRAID OF
THE LIGHT BROWN
APPLE MOTH?
Panel Discussion and Community Brainstorm about all aspects of the LBAM eradication program and possible actions to stop it
Thursday, June 5, 7pm BFUU, 1924 Cedar Street (at Bonita) in Berkeley
(SCENT FREE, PLEASE)
The U.S. and California Departments
of Agriculture want us to believe that the tiny, exotic Light Brown Apple Moth is a threat to our food supply and ecology, though it’s done no actual damage to crops nor forests, and there’s no evidence that it will. We’re told the pesticides they’re using are safe and environmentally friendly, but hundreds of people have been injured already, and pets, and hundred of birds have died. Take part in a brainstorm about what to do when this toxic pesticide program comes to your town, with:
Dr. Daniel Harder
Executive Director of the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum, Adjunct Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology Department, Co-Author of the New Zealand report which contradicts the CDFA’s claims that the LBAM is a threat, and reveals that pesticides are the problem.
David Theodoropoulos
Biologist, Seedsman, and Author of “Invasion Biology: Critique of a Pseudoscience” which reveals the disturbing connections between invasive species councils and the pesticide industry.

Sorry for such a late notice. Our first picnic of the year will be on June 7, Saturday, at China Camp State Park in San Rafael at the Buckeye Point picnic site. Drop in from 3-8pm & bring a yummy potluck with you, & a frisbee, a lawnchair if you like, unscented sunscreen, & layers in case it's cool. I'll send directions later.
Our July picnic is being negotiated now. I'd like to do it in the east bay if possible, perhaps on July 19 or 20. I'll let you know more soon.
There's several events of interest coming up. On June 3, remember to vote.
On June 5, Max Ventura is organizing an LBAM Brainstorm Session in Berkeley at the Unitarian Church on the corner of Bonita & Cedar Streets. The talk is at 5-7pm &
includes speakers Professor Carter from UC Santa Barbara, and an expert on exotic pests.
On June 14 & 15, I am organizing an EHN literature table at the Fairfax Ecofest indoors at the Fairfax Pavilion in Marin County. I need tablesitters for the following hours:
Saturday, June 14 - 12-2pm 2-4pm
Sunday, June 15 - 12-2pm 2-4pm
Let me know if you can help out. It's a great way to meet people & to network with other environmental groups that have booths there. I always get a kick out of it.
On Wednesday, June 18 author Stacy Malkin will be talking about her new book "Not Just a Pretty Face: The Ugly Side of the Beauty Industry". She appears at Book Passage Book Store at 7pm in Corte Madera. Should be scintillating.
Would anyone want to consider looking for a 2BR in Peninsula?
Would also consider East Bay or North Bay but would have to be
a good situation to move there.

Anyone know of a non-MCS person who would be willing to purchase a
used nebulizer? Have gotten one as I did not think mouthpiece would
cause a reaction and am trying to see if I can get rid of it. Also
wondering if I should just hang on to it and see if I can wait for it
to offgass. It's just the mouthpiece and possibly the medication
chamber... It's an Omron Elite Compressor.
That would be a spammer who has been unceremoniously removed from the list... Every once in a while someone signs up on various lists and sends a link like this, usually to a personals page. They don't get caught by spam filters, because they actually physically sign up to the lists.
If you see something like this, with just a link and some vague one liner like "you have a new message", "someone wants to be your friend", along those lines, just delete and ignore. They get removed right away. It doesn't happen too often, but if it does get more frequent, we can reconfigure the group so new members have to be approved first. If anyone has any strong feelings about this one way or another, let me know.

Vegan Reader supports a ZERO tolerance for toxins approach to farming, gardening, home maintenance and life in general in California. Maxina Ventura knows what she is talking about when she says all of CDFA's proposed methods are toxic to us. Their ground methods are also a deadly threat to birds and wildlife, food and water. We don't need them, and we join with Max in urging all of the groups fighting the aerial spraying to expand their protest to include the entire LBAM program.
It is diverse plantings, healthy soils and skilled stewardship of the the lands that are needed to keep our state balanced. Not the lazy and deadly approach of chemicals. My American Indian ancestors farmed the Americas for thousands of years without chemicals. Do you know what the Inca empire eradicated? Hunger. Their stores were overflowing
with food, and when my European ancestors arrived in the United States, they said the land looked like a beautiful park. That was because the early peoples had been lovingly maintaining the land for generations. We can do the same, but only if we cut ties with toxins.
Last month, I was extremely disheartened to see Marin Organics offering to cover their own farms with toxins if only CDFA wouldn't aerially spray. Please, groups and people, don't make deals with the devil. If we are to be the phoenix rising from the ashes of our ruined and toxic lands, let's make sure none of our feathers are coated with chemicals.
I am so grateful for the heroic efforts being made by each and every one of you.
For anyone interested in participating in this important discussion, please select some days that you can commit to meeting.

I am very sorry you were poisoned by a Shaw carpet, Irene. If you read my message, I specifically noted that the particular carpet was free of stain resistant treatment. Not all Shaw carpets are free of such treatment. Mine had to be specially ordered. Because it was specially ordered chemical free, it did not even need to be outgassed.

I was poisoned by an improperly outgassed Shaw carpet and ensuing methods to stop the outgassing and I also echo Iris' comments that you stay far away from carpets period.

I live in Berkeley and am currently without washer/dryer access.
I would be happy to pay someone to do my laundry for me or do my laundry at someone's house. (Or, if anyone knows a wash and fold service that can do fragrance-free, that would be an option, too. None of the places I found in the yellow pages could accommodate that request).

Does anyone know if there is a contact for this person? I found out
his name from another EI and she did not have a new number for him.
He was in Berkeley with something called Healthy Homes and apparently
helps people with indoor air quality issues. Not sure if this is the
same org that Michelle Miller is associated with?
I was thinking of having him come to my workplace and or father's house
to see if he could make some good suggestions for improving the indoor
air.
Please keep yourselves informed about the twist ties that have been going up in various areas around the greater Bay Area and beyond: Cupertino, San Jose, Sunnyvale, Fremont, Dublin, Pescadero, Half Moon Bay, San Rafael, Ross, Treasure Island, Moraga, Carpinteria, and Sonoma likely coming soon: http://www.cdfa.ca.gov/phpps/PDEP/lbam/twist_tie_treatment_maps.html

Pheromone-laced twist ties applied to combat moth in Santa Clara County
The California Department of Food and Agriculture is applying pheromone-laced twist ties to a 27-square-mile area of northwest Santa Clara County today as part of the state's efforts to combat the
light brown apple moth. The pheromone on the twist tie is designed to disrupt the moth's mating cycle by confusing male moths and making them unable to locate females. The pheromone is specifically targeted to the light brown apple moth and is not harmful to other organisms, according to the department. Twist ties will be applied in Cupertino, San Jose and Sunnyvale. In Cupertino, the ties will be applied in an area around De Anza College and south of Interstate 280 in the area of Stelling Road and Greenleaf Drive. In San Jose the ties are being applied in an area east of Lawrence Expressway and north of 280 and in the area just south and west of Samuel Rogers Middle School. In Sunnyvale the ties are being applied to an area bordered by Fremont Avenue, Pauline Drive, Carlisle Way and Dunnocy Way. They are also being applied to an area around the intersection of El Camino Real and South Sunnyvale
Avenue. A total of 45 light brown apple moths have been found in Santa Clara County, according to state agriculture officials. The moth, a native of Australia, was first detected in California in early 2007. It feeds off of, and can seriously damage, more than 250 species of plants, including most of California's agricultural crops.

I have to echo the tile and washable rug recommendation. I know a lot of people are very attached to the idea of carpet, but having been poisoned by carpet repeatedly, I would really urge your mother-in-law to stay far away from the whole concept. It's not worth the risk. Even if you don't have an immediate reaction, it may have long-term impacts.
The carpet my landlord installed, incidentally, is one of Shaw's "green" carpets. Short nylon, supposedly no treatments (and the stains on it, might confirm this). It smells like someone wrapped the entire building into thick pantyhose, and it clearly has a neurological effect on me, though somewhat less violent than the more toxic carpets. I think the mice might live, but this canary has had to tape shut the door, and even the light switch that shares a wall with the hallway, because the carpet fumes are seeping in.

Valerie,
A few years ago I installed Shaw short nylon carpeting free of stain resistance treatment. It was the only wall-to-wall carpeting I could find without chemical treatment. I am chemically sensitized, but found this carpet was fine for me. Because each of us is different in the substances to which we are allergic, I would recommend actually asking to visit an installation of the same carpet and underlayment before you buy. The carpet was installed with stretcher strips rather than glue, a method I had to insist upon and make a condition of the sale. (It is more difficult to install this way.) Some people are very allergic to latex and some are very allergic to wool. Natural products are not necessarily tolerable for anyone with MCS. Nothing is for sure, and we also change in our sensitivities. Visit an installation of the exact thing before you choose. Thank
goodness you have a choice. With efficient detox, I have reduced my level of sensitivity quite a bit. This solution may not serve you, if you haven't yet detoxed enough.
For those who haven't been able to detox sufficiently, a tile floor with washable cotton rugs is generally a safer choice, especially in the long run, because the rugs can be washed and hung in the sun for extra cleaning. The Jacksonville study found that people tracked in pesticide whether or not they knew of any pesticide use nearby, so it is important to be able to wash carpets frequently and hang them out.

carpet recommendations Posted by: "Valerie Igl" valigl@... valigl Sun May 4, 2008 11:28 pm (PDT) Hello all!
My mother-in-law has been fixing up her guest room, where I typically stay over the winter holidays. She has already painted, and wants to put in carpet. She is
open to my recommendations. Is there anything I can tell her about "better" materials to use for carpet, and backing?
Thanks for your help.

The U.S. and California Departments of Agriculture want us to believe that the tiny, exotic Light Brown Apple Moth is a threat to our food supply and ecology, even though it’s done no actual damage to crops nor forests, and there’s no evidence that it will. We are told the pesticides they’re using are safe and environmentally friendly, but hundreds of people have been injured already, and pets, and hundred of birds have died. Come listen to their stories, and participate in a brainstorm about what to do when this poisonous pesticide program comes to your town.
IT’S NOT SAFE – IT’S NOT EFFECTIVE – IT’S NOT NECESSARY!

The only carpets I would recommend are organic wool, hemp, or other organic fabrics. I would urge her not to get any synthetic carpet. If you need ammunition of why not to compromise on this issue, show her the article by Cindy Duehring: http://www.holisticmed.com/carpet/ and show her the movie of the neurotoxic effects on a mouse exposed to new synthetic carpet: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PpLPoJXqfNw
There are a lot of synthetic carpets that are advertised as "green". Don't trust them! "Green" might be better for the earth, in terms of reuse and recycle, but can be devastating to health. There's no such thing as a healthy synthetic carpet. My landlord had such "green" carpet put into the hallway of my building back in the Fall, and I ended up with chemical burns up and down my legs for several months. I have to wear a gas mask to enter and
exit my building now, because the fumes are still really intense. It takes years to offgas, and many carpets never do.
I don't know much about backing, but one thing to watch out for is that some of them are treated with anti-microbials, so always ask, and stay away from those. I've heard some people with MCS have had good luck with latex, but I've never tried it. I think there was a thread on this list a while ago about carpet... Go to the homepage (see bottom of this email), and do a search for carpet and see what comes up. I think some people had good input on backing.
Glue can also be an issue. There's no such thing as non-toxic carpet adhesive. Better to tack it down.
Safe, organic carpet is expensive. There are also other options for flooring, not many of them cheap either. My favorite flooring, which is probably not what your mother-in-law has in mind, is an earthen floor with radiant heat underneath. Depending on where she lives, there may be a
natural building community she could consult with about this option. If this isn't too radical for her, I might be able to put you in touch with some builders in her area.
Good luck!
