Not personally in a spray zone but my kids and I have suffered due to
insecticide spray, both on a large scale, agriculturally (Sonoma), and on a
"small" scale, with a neighbor spraying out of a RAID or other similar
insecticide, can in her yard, causing drift into ours. The smell to me is
like a plastic smell, which makes sense since we're talking petro-chemicals.
If you click onto www.dontspraycalifornia.org and then onto West Nile Virus,
you'll find East Bay Pesticide Alert's statement to the Alameda County
Vector Control people, in a presentation done for them. Included is a
description of our family's experience with the neighbor's use and resulting
temporary paralysis, the Kaiser Dr. referring to it as "classic insecticide
poisoning" and telling us not to go home until we'd contacted the neighbor
and gotten her assurance that she would not spray again (took close to a
week, so with no notice ahead our daily lives stopped for that time period),
and the doctor said it isn't just one dose that worries them, but that a
cumulative effect worries them, that they worry about cancer. She said this
in front of my children. This is the reality: low doses over time can in
some cases cause more damage than one isolated bigger hit. Of course, it all
depends on the person, the host. If you start off with a strong immune
system and get one big dose your body might be able to deal reasonably with
it with only acute symptoms. But any of us? Anyone with MCS needs no
exposures at all. We all know that any exposures can create both short and
longterm problems for us.
Other kinds of symptoms you might experience include drooling; blurry
vision; inability to articulate words, stumbling over speech; uneven gait;
nerve-twitching; memory problems; brain "fog"; problems calling up names, or
names of objects, while still being able to come up with some words to
describe the use of an object, or a description of someone's looks; short
term memory problems possibly for life. For instance, I am a singer and I
can relearn lyrics for even long songs which I sang many years ago and
haven't looked at in even 15 years much, much, much more easily than I can
recall lyrics for a simple, two-verse song learned after Sonoma. After my
baby was born late in 2001, though I had not been living in Sonoma at all
since 1-1/2 years prior, I kept forgetting his name over the first YEAR,
though we had been discussing the possibility of naming him Blake for months
prior to his birth. Like others with this horrid effect, I learned a million
ways to get around that particular issue ("my sweet one" could never be
wrong) so I lived alone with the guilt I felt until revealing it maybe a
couple years ago.
