Gail - take some oatmeal and cook it like you would if you were going to eat
it (which, by the way, is very good for calming) When it's fully cooked,
strain out the oats and take the water/mush and add it to your bathwater
(make the water a little warmer than you normally would, but don't burn
yourself. The oatmeal will calm your skin and cool off the antihistamines
that are running around crazy now. If you have Chamomile (even from a tea
bag) add it to the bath and just soak. No soap, no rubbing except to use
your hands. Stay in the water until you start getting chilled, or pruney
(:-) ) and when you get out, pat yourself dry - don't rub. Put on some
comfortable clothes or pjs and get into bed and rest. Take a nap if you
can.

Seems to me the salts might aggravate the itching.

By the way, oatmeal is very good for nerves, so if you decide to try this
remedy above, cook double the batch you would for bathing, and eat the other
half. Add honey and milk if you want to the oatmeal. Eat slowly and enjoy
it. Sounds to me like your body is working overtime with the kidney failure
issue and if you could relax and be "in the moment" it might give you and
your body a chance to heal.

I know it's hard to quiet yourself when all this medical stuff is going on,
and I understand the stress. My thoughts are with you.

macadamia nut oil very closely resembles human sebum. so it's a good choice. ;o)

If coconut oil is drying to your skin, you are allergic to it.  Alot of people
are, I am one of them and I just stay away from the stuff. I get very dry,
rashy, itchy skin from it.  Easy to do in handmade soap.

Thank you for the ideas. I went and sat in the river in the hot mineral
pools and also soaked in the steam room and that helped a lot but don't have
access to that in AZ.

Lillie was using rose hibs for one thing in the wrap. It is her business so
I hate to ask her for what her secrets are when I have been paying for the
wraps. She told me to take a hot bath using for cups of cider vinegar, day
two use four cups epsom salts and day three...I have already forgot.... she
was also using herbs she has grown in her garden or was getting herbs from
the Natives or going out looking for her herbs in the woods or along the
roadside.

I have plantain...I made a salve out of it for itching...I have no chickweed
and where will I get clay?

I don't mean to be sounding like a person who wants sympathy but I am again
breaking out on my leg and the back of my neck and into my hair.. favorite
spots when I break out. I have about every kind of lotion, salve,
prescription and nothing is making this go away. The only open sores that I
have is if I have scratched them otherwise they are bumps all over and welts
like an allergic reaction to something. I just about get them gone and then
they come back with a vengence. I have been drinking cranberry juice,
herbal teas, eating blueberries any thing with antitoxins.

I am at whits end, the Drs. can't find anything to sooth the skin or the
itch. I have been trying to work on the inside in hopes that the outside
would stop.

The Natives used herbs etc long before there were Drs. and I am just looking
for something that would help with heat packs or in a bath and I am going to
try the vinegar and salts.

Heat turns me beat red and the welts get bigger and I can handle that if I
can even think that it might go away.

Thanks again for you help and I wouldn't do anything if I thought it was
going to mess me up worse that I already am... going crazy itching.

Good recipes for CP bar soap are not necessarily good for liquid soap. I
recommend a high percentage of coconut oil for liquid soap, for the lather, and
it won't cloud the soap. Some oils don't work too well for liquid soap, for
various reasons.

My favorite liquid soap oils are: coconut, avocado, apricot kernel, jojoba, and
almond.

The process is also different; most folks cook the soap on the stove, to get it
done quicker. If you have the time, you can cold-process the liquid soap, but
I'm impatient, so I cook it.

One more thing: KOH behaves differently that NaOH. It takes a bit longer to get
to trace--another reason I cook it, because I am blending the soap while it is
on the heat. Both heat and movement speed up the saponification process.

Hey Patty Jo Actually, I was talking about lotion at that moment-i realize I
was flip-flopping back and forth between soap and lotion. I can't bring myself
to try Emu in soap yet because its so expensive but that time may come. My
soaps, right now, are pretty standard. Lana

Hey Lana,
Do you use any other oils besides the avocado & Emu in the soap?  I've got some
Emu I need to use and just haven't found alot of recipes for it.......I've been
keeping it in the fridge, but need to use it up.

I'll start....have been absent myself for a long time due to health reasons but
am back and looking for some fellow members to chat with and maybe answer some

making holiday presents for my family and today I am making calendula sop.  My
roses did not produce much this year so am not making rose soap and lotions this

too.

Hey Sherry,

Glad to see ya back.

The list has slowed down some over a few weeks, but that is normal.

I have been looking at all of the new oils on the market now.

There are so many new ones! I have just tried some Argan oil in soap .( a
small batch because of the expense)

I REALLY like the soap. You can really feel how soft your skin is. It will
be great for January alligator legs.

Has anybody tried any of the new oils on the market?

Hey Lucinda, Sherry and all the rest:)
Sherry, I hope your health issues are completely resolved.  You are my favorite
mentor.
Nice to see you online :)
Lucinda, I have seen a few new oils but I'm just trying to use up what I have in
stock. Also, how helpful is an oil, any oil - not just the new ones, in soap?  I
mean, since it's a rinse off product - well, even as I write this, I know
coconut oil dries my skin - I guess I just don't understand how that works.  You
would think that as an oil, it would be good for the skin.
And I have an awful case of alligator hide, especially in the winter so keep us
posted with your research :)  I'm fixing to start on a lotion formula in
Sherry's advanced lotion calculator which is my favorite spreadsheet: )  I've
been making liquid soap, shampoo, bar soap and cream soap so I need a break -
back to lotion.

I would think about things like chickweed and plantain, as well as clay and
epsom salts for drawing. They are all fairly gentle, but effective at the
same time.

I've been thinking about making some liquid soap myself.  However, I am a
little iffy on getting started.  I never made liquid soap before but I would
love to have a handmade hand soap for friends and family to use.  Any advice or
tips on liquid soap making would be greatly appreciated if you do not mind
sharing.  Can you just use your same recipe and exchange the lye for potassium
hydroxide?

I'm still new to soap making so I have not invested in any of the new oils.  I
would love to try some soon though.

Thanks,
Sam

I will withhold any critical personal opinion on this topic for the moment since
I am way too new to this list to make the kneejerk statement that has come to
mind.

That said, it would seem that you have received herbal wraps that worked for
this specific issue? Can you possibly ask the friend that was performing them
what specifically was being used?

There are many things that can sooth itch, and help with breakouts and other
symptoms you are experiencing. In general most warm wet compress will sooth the
area and soften the skin to allow the eruptions to drain and perhaps heal.
However, warmth and moisture are the exact qualities necessary for infections to
breed. So there is not a universal silver bullet answer without knowing a whole
lot more.

If you have open areas then things with antiseptic or antimicrobial qualities
can help quell infection and irritation.

However, I am sure that I don't have to warn you to be careful of what you use

I can't stress enough that you discuss them with your doctors. Just because

Thanks Sherry,
I have my eye on your olive oil soap, the newer version of castile.  Will be
making that one at some point. Also, I'm kind of keeping my ears open for
people using ostrich oil vs emu.  I had to overcome an aversion to using animal
oil but I can say now that I've been successful because I love it in a
lotion.   The expense is prohibitive, though, and I read somewhere, wish I
could remember where, about a lady saying that she like ostrich as well or
better and it was much cheaper.  I just made another batch of my avocado/emu
lotion and it is fabulous.  Sinks in my skin and feels so good -   Lucinda
mentioned Tamanu Oil in her post  - seems like I remember it's good for
scars.  Anyway, I've used it in balms and lotions.

Thanks Amy, I've developed a real love for emu and thought about using it as a
superfat ingredient - I think that is one that is added towards the end of the
mix? - but wondered if it would help.  Sounds like maybe it will :)

Oils in soap are helpful depending upon the superfat percentage. If the superfat
is high, that means the soap has more free-floating oils in it. It would have a
lower lather, and would be less harsh to the skin than a soap at 0% superfat.
Some oils are also high in unsaponifiables- -meaning that those oils won't turn
into soap as much as others will.

A coconut oil soap needn't necessarily dry your skin. If it has a higher
superfat, I predict it wouldn't be drying.

Hi ya Pace and it is nice to be back in action, and thanks Lucinda for all your
help.

I have not tried any new oils lately due to the expense of them but certainly
they are a great addition to lotions and creams.  Brassa oil is another
overooked oil that is used in formulations and also great in hair products.

Pace....some people report coconut oil is drying, but in my bias opinion, most
of them are using way to much coconut oil in their formulations, and can
certainly cut that amount down but using about 15 % coconut oil and 10 % castor
oil , both of which make good suds, which is what most people look for in a bar
or liquid soap, and castor oil does not seem to be as drying to the
skin. However, when using castor oil, because it is a liquid, one should
increase the hard oils 10% or drying time can take like... forever when lowering
that ratio.  All liquid oil soap can take as long as 2 months to dry.

I also always recommend using a BUTTER in the soap formulation also, such as
cocoa or shea or other butter, for a luxurious feel and conditioning agent and
acts like a lotion within the soap itself.
And certainly using quality oils make a great feeling soap as well.  You know my
favorite is of course, good ole olive oil so great for the skin in all bath

This use to be a lively place to be, where is everyone??? Lets hear from you

all and what your doing with your bath and body products???? ?

I'll start....have been absent myself for a long time due to health reasons

but am back and looking for some fellow members to chat with and maybe

answer some questions. I am still selling my Natural Care E-books online

but at a different location now. I don't make products to sell anymore,

just E-books, but I am making holiday presents for my family and today I am

making calendula sop. My roses did not produce much this year so am not

making rose soap and lotions this year...just calendula lotions and creams

and also making some beeswax candles too.

You can see how to make calendula lotions on this List Mom's website at

http://www.glenbroo <http://www.glenbroo kfarm.com/ makinglotions. htm>

So lets hear from you all and wish each other Happy Holidays.

Happy Holidays to Lucinda [ our List Mom} of Glenbrook Farms and to all of

> I am looking for a mixture of herbs that I can boil up with a towel or
heavy cloth that I can put on my back to help draw toxins. I am in Stage
III kidney failure and have been breaking out on my lower back around the
kidney area and need something to help draw and relieve the itching at the
same time.

I was going and having herbal wraps and that was doing me wonders but now
that I am back in AZ my friend is in CO.

Any suggestions would be more than welcome.

I mean, since it's a rinse off product - well, even as I write this, I know
coconut oil dries my skin - I guess I just don't understand how that works.
You would think that as an oil, it would be good for the skin.
And I have an awful case of alligator hide, especially in the winter so keep us
posted with your research :)  I'm fixing to start on a lotion formula in
Sherry's advanced lotion calculator which is my favorite spreadsheet:)  I've
been making liquid soap, shampoo, bar soap and cream soap so I need a break -
back to lotion.

Alice:
I have goosebumps now that I cannot get rid of....of course I will participate!
My nephew had the same cancer - neuroblastoma, so this is very near and dear
to my heart. He went to All Childrens in Tampa then Ronald McDonald in New
York- he successfully has beat it, having the tumor removed- odds are RARE!!!
I thank God everyday, and when I hear of another little one with a similar
condition- I am all in!
I also work for a cancer center- (although my last day is 11/13/09 due to
downsizing) - so I will print this up and bring it to work and have EVERYONE
sign cards- even our beloved patients themselves!
Thank you for sharing this with mompack, Alice.
You're appreciated !
Have a great day and be blessed!

A very trusted friend and fellow crafter sent this through facebook. This is
heart wrenching to know that, after battling 1/2 of his life he is losing the
battle.
SO, how about we help to make his last Christmas one that will never be
forgotten by anyone!! Let's make it a special one for him!!! It's the least we
can do
and truly doesn't cost anything if you consider what it is for and what it will
do for him!!!

From Mothers in Touch FaceBook Group...Special request from a friend:

5-year-old Noah is in his last stages of a 2 1/2 year battle with Neuroblastoma
Cancer. They are celebrating Christmas next weekend and Noah loves Christmas
cards. Please take a minute to send a card to: Noah Biorkman, 1141 Fountain View
Circle South, Lyon, MI 48178. Thank you so much and PLEASE pass this along.
Let's get a truck load to him!

Thanks everyone!!!

I make melt and pour soap, but when I put it in a cellophane or plastic bag, it
smears when people pick it up. Any ideas for another way to package it?

Thank you!
