homemade scrubs for gifts   Message List

I got this recipe for a homemade sugar body scrub from someone online... and
I was wondering a few things. Here is the recipe:

"1/2 cup brown sugar (I use the really dark one)
1/2 cup sea salt
1/3 cup ALmond, Grapeseed or Olive Oil
1 Tbsp Honey or Vegetable Glycerine
1 tsp vitamin E
1 Tbsp Kaolin clay (optional, but nice)
A few drops of essential oils or fragrance (vanilla is nice)

Mix everything together and store in an 8oz canning jar (or 2 4oz jars)
Label.

To use wet skin slightly, then scrub in a circular motion over your entire
body, except your face and sensitive areas. Leave on for 3-4 minutes then
rinse well. Pat dry. Voila!!"

First off... what is better... almond, grapeseed, or olive oil? Obviously
olive is the cheapest. I have also read about sunflower and safflower oils
for scrubs. What is the best (for a girl on a budget!) Also, what is Kaolin
clay? Is it hard to find? (I need it ASAP to make Christmas gifts with...)
Is it powdered, solid? Does it dissolve into the scrub, or does it stay
separate?

I bought some fragrance oils. How many drops should I use? It doesn't smell
that strong.

Also... what would be better... the honey or vegetable glycerine? I saw some
glycerine bars in the craft store today to make soap out of. Is this the
glycerine I would need to get for this scrub? If so... I would obviously
have to melt it, right? What's the best way to handle this?

Also... they are just gifts and will not be sold. Do I need to put some kind
of preservative in them? I thought salt was a natural preservative, is that
true? If I don't put a preservative... how long should I tell my
friends/family they have to use the product? If I DO put a preservative,
what should I use and is it expensive?

Sorry so many questions!

Newcomer to the list and to making bath products,
~Crystal
