I was just thinking about you this morning and wanted to tell you
that I wish you well come Friday. By this time next week you will be
off on a new phase of your "new" life. My best wishes to you and I
know you will feel so much better very soon. It just happens....one
day you will awake and think, oh my gosh, something doesn't hurt
anymore or gosh I'm walking better or more than I was. My shortness
of breath is better. Just remember, you didn't gain the weight all
at once and you are not going to have a rapid weight loss either.
Just a slow, steady loss.

Hi,
I was just wondering if you are walking? And are you getting all your
water in? I'm not sure how able you are about moving but make sure you
are doing ALL YOU CAN. Even pushing it a little each week. Do you go
to a support group? How is your family and friends with your surgery?
These are just a few things I think you should make sure are going
correctly in your life before you get too frustrated you give up.
Please let me know how you are doing and if I can help. Maybe I could
email you daily and you can set some goals that will keep your
frustration down and depression away.

I am not from Bolivar but am a close neighbor. I live in Springfield and jumped on the "Band Wagon" last Friday (9-28-07).
I just had my post-op appointment and since 9-11 (my first consultation w/ Dr. Nigro) to date, I have lost 17 pounds. Be encouraged, this is a good tool to help relearn how to eat and a good source of hope to get back among the active.
Take Care,
Momofgigi

I was banded on 03/08/07 and I have only lost 32 lbs. I too seem to have stopped loosing weight. I
quit smoking just before surgery and I don't know if this has slowed my metabolism down so much that it's causing me some trouble?
However I have heard which I don't know if it's true or not. But I heard several people say making the transition from 300 to getting in the 2's was very hard.
It's like your body fights you. I don't know if this is where you are or not but I heard people talking about it in the office at WLSC. This is where I am. I have stayed at
299 for weeks and weeks it is very frustrating and I know exactly how you feel. I hope all goes better for you. I have also read some interesting information lately about
thyroid. Maybe both of us have a thyroid that is not function properly?? I don't know! Don't give up!! We are in this together!

I was banded 1-4-07 and I have stopped losing weight, I have lost 35 pounds and now on my last two fills I have gained a pound each time. I hate to think that I have spent all this money and this isn't going to work either. So far I have spent roughly 500.00 for each pound lost. I am getting so frustrated and down by this. I have the VG band and my current fill will put me to about 9cc-9.5cc, HELP.

I did the liquid diet for 10 days (June 16-June 26) and, of course,
for two weeks following surgery. This will really take the weight
off! Did not start taking Centrum Chewables until after I had my
surgery. I went for manicure this morning (weekly occurance) and had
her take some length off. I work with computers, typewriters and
adding machines all day and cannot work with much length. I use to
have to baby my nails. Didn't realize that I might need vitamins.
They certainly seem to be working for me. As I said, better nails
and my hair has not fallen out either.-

The cash price I paid at the Overland Park WLSC was $17,500.00 There
was another doctor, outside the WLSC, who does the surgery about a
$1,000 cheaper, but I would have had to go to a hospital and I liked
the idea of going to one place to have everything done. No regrets
there as the WLSC facility is clean and brand new. The staff in the
surgery center are really nice. Lots of folks there to take care of
you, day and night.

OK, thanks for the info. I had given up looking at Walmart. Guess I'd better go to a different one. Could you tell me which Walmart, or what the name brand is on the scales? I'm needing one soon....still waiting for my surgery date.
Wishing you well, Kathy W.

Hi Kathy,
I am at 400# and I bought my bathroom scale at our local Walmart. Not
sure of the brand name, but it only cost me about $25.00 and it is
accurate. I began this WLS journey at 418# so I couldn't get on my
scale at home, but had my 2nd visit with the dietician last week and
weighed in at 400# and went home and stepped on my scale and it read
the same (give or take a few oz)... I couldn't believe that I lost
18# in a month with being on a steroid for bronchitis for 2 weeks
too. Hope you find a scale that you like. Take care.
Good Luck! I hope you will post a note letting us know how you are
coming along. It is an exciting experience.

How long did you do the liquid diet before your surgery? I think
doing so well during and after surgery would be so worth it. I might
suggest the juice plus supplements rather than the vitamins as they
are for sure absorbed into your body. What type of vitamin do you
take. there is little proof that a lot of them are really absorbed in
you body and do you much good.
I am so glad you are getting along so well. Where did you have your
surgery?

Ok...keep your fingers crossed for me...I have heard good and bad

Thank you so much Phyllis for your advice. I'm scheduled for Oct. 12th. I am starting the liquid diet you suggest this very minute. I want so much to do what is necessary for this procedure to help me get healthier. I have to admit, I have fallen into that thinking about eating my "last meals", but you have helped me get a grip and get busy NOW! Thanks again. Please continue the good advice, all of you!

signature My God is a God of another chance, just ask. Love, Ros
my name is threase and I am just starting the process.Any advice of what to expect with the wait and with the surgery? Approx. what is the average cost?
I would recommend that you immediately go on a liquid diet. Such as
soups, cream of wheat, jello, etc. I did this 10 days before my
surgery and the surgery that sometimes takes 1 hr to 1.5 hrs only
took 30 minutes thanks to my liver being smaller. The doctor told me
that many, when faced with the surgery, begin eating more thinking
they are going to be deprived. I am losing about 2 lbs per week and
find that I can eat most any kind of food. I don't do well with red
meat, even hamburger, but I have eaten ribs, chicken, fish. My nurse
tells me that everyone is different and what may agree or disagree
with me would not be the same for everyone. I do not eat bread. I
always take my chewable vitamin and I also take fiber. I have not
been bothered with any bowel problems. I always had problems with my
finger nails growing. Since beginning the vitamins my nails are
growing and much stronger. My hair has not fallen out either.
By the way, my surgery was so successful I didn't even need to take
any pain medication when I came home. Just remember to go easy on
liquids for a few days after surgery. Your new pouch area will be
swollen. I was only suppose to SIP 1 oz of water per hour for a
couple of days. Contrary to what you may think, you will not be
hungry. You'll get along just great and when you finally get to the
pureed foods, you will think they are ambrozia.

Has anyone gone through the insurance approval process for Preferred
Health Systems that Spirit Aerosystems offers it's employee? I'm
struggling with this....
Well I have Blue Cross/Blue Shield of Mo as of today they still have not paid. I received a letter stating they would pay for my surgery otherwise I would have NEVER had it done. Then after surgery I got an EOB stating they would pay 854.00 and I was responsible for the rest. I about had a heart attack. I called WLSC and they stated they would fight with them. I have not heard anymore from them but I know they have not paid yet because I got EOB for the fills that they had to argue with them about and the insurance did finally pay those. However they have yet to pay for surgery and it's been since March. So hang in there you are not alone.

Kellie,
I was banded on Aug 3rd. My approval came within two or three business days of my initial consultation. My worries started after the surgery, when the EOB came from the insurance co. The WTLSC has been wonderful in reassuring me that things are ok, so I'm banking on them. (no pun intended)

I had a similar experience in that I was a self-pay patient and it
took a while to get a scheduling call. After waiting about 10 days,
I called the clinic and it turned out that they had never received
my chest x-rays from the imaging facility. Once I cleared that up,
I heard back from them to schedule an appointment the next day. If
you haven't heard anything in a while, I suggest calling to make
sure that they have everything they need.
On a totally different note, I've posted several comments about
having a slow time with the weight loss after the surgery. I just
wanted to let everyone know that I had my 4th fill a couple of weeks
ago and that fill made a HUGE difference. I finally feel
significant restriction and am starting to see steady weight loss.
To all of you who might be getting a little frustrated, keep the
faith! Once you get filled to the right spot, you'll be amazed at
the difference.

Hey Chris,
Just wanted to see how you are doing after your surgery. I heard
your name but didn't get to see you there. My surgery went well and
will be on my way back to Springfield today. Some of my incision
sites oozed a little but nothing serious, remedied by bandaids. The
Dr. used skin glue instead of steri-strips and bandaids. It is
amazing that I am full on just a few sips of liquid. Keep in touch
to let me know how you are.
Take care and God Bless,
Valerie

I have mailhandlers with the United States Postal Service. I started
my medical tests in February 2007 and was banded August 28th. They
made me jump thru a lot of hoops but is was worth it. Keep on top of
it and keep in touch with the center and your insurance company. My
insurance company stalled after the last test results were faxed to
them but a call from me got the ball rolling. As I have read in the
other emails, only you can keep the ball rolling. Have the insurance
co. give you a list of ALL THE REQUIRED TESTS and then YOU have to
schedule them and get the results to the weight loss center. They will
get them to your insurance co. They were great about talking with me
and keeping me positive. Just remember they have a very heavy workload
so you have to keep your case up front and going. Good Luck!
(FYI... For the uninitiated, DW = Darling Wife)
5:00 AM (ok, more like 5:20 AM...) - WAKE UP CALL - Shower, Shave
5:25 AM (wake up DW)
5:30 AM (wake up DW again)
6:00 AM - Depart for Weight Loss Center - KC to Overland Park @ 6:00
AM = 33 minutes
6:30 AM - Arrive - Some paperwork - DW is cranky so I tell her to
leave and get herself some caffeine.
6:45 AM - They take me back to the pre-op room where I change into my
lovely gown. The anesthesiologist has a University of Kansas cap on.
Not a good start to the day. I get dressed and the nurse starts to
draw blood and start an IV. Turns out, not good on the veins to drink
only water for a day. She had a helluva time getting the needle in,
but she did get it started.
7:00 AM - The anesthesiologist comes in and goes over his spiel and I
spot a quick glance of Dr. Selim. Just a hi and bye. I made sure to
tell them to not wheel me back before DW got back.
7:30 AM - Now, at this point, I've got to tell you that the level of
obnoxious and my level of nerves both increased exponentially as the
morning progressed. However, this is where the rubber hit the road
and I really wanted to express all of the love you have for a
person... For their courage to take this journey with you... For all
of the little things and the big things...
Yeah - missed opportunity there - because I think I just made a dumb
comment and got wheeled away. (I'm sure she knows...)
So, they wheel me back to the OR. They are very calm but not laughing
at my jokes - probably because the jokes weren't funny by that time.
They tell me to switch to the other bed and breathe dee..............
8:50 AM - Out of surgery.
8:51 AM - Nauseous. Dry heaved a little bit. She said that was due to
the morphine or the anesthesia - I don't remember which. She said she
gave me "something" for the nausea. It worked.
8:51 AM - Dr. Selim came out and told DW that everything was fine,
that I was in recovery and I was coming out of it.
10:00 AM - I'm back in the recovery room now and the nurse is really
trying to keep me taking big breaths. I guess I got diagnosed with a
little Sleep Apnea while I was under. Weight loss will only help this
in the future, but for now, it was causing me to block my deep
breaths when coming out of surgery. She gave me oxygen and that
seemed to help.
10:10 AM - DW comes back to talk to me. I'm in and out of
consciousness for the next couple of hours. This was partly due to
the anesthesia wearing off, but mostly due to the lack of sleep. I
was TIRED.
10:10 AM to 12:00 PM - DW kept offering me ice chips. I think I ate
two. Mmmm.... Ice chips....
12:00 PM - My humor starts to come back, and my color starts to come
back. I think I was given morphine at one point, but it started to
wear off around noon. I actually started pretty good. I rested for a
couple more minutes. The nurse asked me if I wanted a popsicle. Well,
sure! I ate about half of it. It was orange and creamy.
Gooooooood....
12:30 PM - The nurse asked me if I wanted to try to pee and walk
around a little bit. Well, sure! So, I got up, got my gown retied and
started walking. I really didn't feel that bad! There was some
obvious skin pain on my stomach from below my chest to my abdomen -
however it kind of just felt like I was punched with a medicine ball
or something. That pain remained constant, but even at this hour is
just about a 4 - easily managed with medicine.
12:45 PM - Was walking and talking and even managed to trickle out
some pee. Apparently, that's all the checkmarks they need to get you
the hell out of there because next thing I know I was signing forms
and changing back into my clothes. I still hadn't seen my scars or
anything, but the nurses and doctors were keeping DW pretty informed.
I was still sort of groggy so I'm glad they weren't giving me the
directions on how to build something complicated.
1:00 PM - In the car on the way home. Yep, it was just that simple.
1:45 PM - Overland Park to KC @ 1:00 = 45 minutes. LOOOOOOONNNNGGGGG
car ride.
2:00 PM - My symptoms at this point are the stomach pain and a sore
throat (due to the intubation). However, I'm still very tired at this
point and slept until about 6:30 PM.
6:30 PM to Now - Feeling pretty good. Walked outside for a little bit
and had a popsicle. Even feeling well enough to update this blog and
keep everyone up to date.
In all, I wouldn't say my pain level ever rose above a 5 and from
what I can tell, I was in and out in near record time. That wasn't my
goal, but it's always better to recover at home. They did give me a
liquid prescription for some pain meds which I took once since I've
been home.
I'll keep you posted on the details. Here's a picture of what my
stomach looks like now (click on the link - it's not for someone who
is eating of doesn't like scars.)
Things from the message boards that I haven't seen yet:
Gas
PB
Major pain
Thanks for everyone's prayers and good thoughts!! It seems like today
was an unqualified success!!!
thank you ladies for responding! I got "the call" Thurs. I'm
scheduled for Oct. 12th. I know the waiting must have been nerve
racking, Phyllis. I only waited two days, but it seemed like
forever. I'm so ready to do this, work hard and feel better.
Should I do anything in particular diet wise, to get ready? I was
encouraged to try to lose some weight before. I'd like to know what
you all think. Thanks again for the advise and support!

I had the very same problem! I paid my $$$$'s, had my tests, visited
with the doctor and never heard another word. I began calling after
10 days had passed. I had to make several calls before I had any
results. I am an older patient and AFTER a month of waiting I
finally saw another doctor, had to have cardio stress test to prove I
was able to undergo the procedure. After the cardiologist okayed me
I still had to call them once again in order to get the ball
rolling. It was very stressful, but now that the surgery has been
done and all is going well, it certainly was worth it.
I am a business owner and have a very good idea about finances. WLSC
does not treat their cash customers as they should. I don't like to
think that they just hold your money for as long as they can. Bad
business practice. I even filled out a questionaire listing my
concerns. No one ever contacted me.
That said, the surgical portion of the WLSC could not have been
nicer, kinder, or more considerate. The facility is excellent and my
doctor was absolutly the greatest.
Good luck.

reason you shouldn't have heard from them now. From working in the
medical field...... of prosthetics.... and it's busy.... i can only
imagine how busy they are at wls facilities these days.... I'd call
them back. Your paper may have slipped through the cracks or
something. Call 'em!

everyone else but I inquired about an appointment the last part of
August, had my Dr. and pre-op appointment the 11th of September and
received a call on the 20th (I think) to set up the surgery date.
That day is approaching(friday the 28th). When it comes to your
health, be proactive. You deserve to be healthy and happy.
Depending on where you live can make a difference. I am going to
Weight Loss Surgical Center in Overland Park, KS. Everyone there has
been just great and have treated me with respect. I can't wait to
finally put faces to the names. Take care and God Bless. Valerie
