B-GE:WHO propagnada on GM foods   Message List
Reply Message #2382 of 6553 |
The World Health Organization (WHO) today put out a list of 20 questions
geared at promoting use of genetically modified (GM) foods. The
document is available on line :http://www.who.int/fsf/ "20 Questions on
Genetically Modified Foods" 15 Oct 2002 In english
The material is very misleading in that it claims that GM foods have
faced strict safety evaluations but the WHO prefers to ignore the
assumption of "substantial equivalence" the idea that GM foods are
equivalent to unmodified foods. The assumed "substantial equivalence"
made it unnecessary to test the foods in animal and human volunteer
(clinical) studies and such tests have not been done. Furthermore,
countries deploying GM foods on a large scale have not labeled the
products in the market so that no meaningful evaluation of the safety of
the foods can be made.
