Re: Monique and the Mango Rains - let the discussion begin!

There are so many aspects to the female circumcision/genital mutilation issue... but for those interested in midwifery, I wanted to share a few bits of info.  If you are working directly with women... there are two sides to this story.  You can advocate against the practice with all of your might, but at the same time you have to offer special care as a midwife to the women who have endured this cultural reality.  The World Health Organization has great information and a brochure on midwifery care and the circumsized woman that is definitely worth checking out.  I have learned that when it comes to issues like this.. whether it is a girl and her clitoris or a perfect little baby boy and his foreskin- sometimes I have to just bite my tongue.  I detest both practices, but I still have to give good information and good health care.  My hands won't be a part of these practice and I will advocate against them on a grand scale, but all of that goes out the window when I am trying to serve a woman and her family with kindness and genuine acceptance.

It was a hard book for me to read because it was so sad how poverty stricken the people were and of course how Monique dies was extra sad due to all the good...

I so enjoyed the book- both as a cultural anthropologist and a midwifery student. Rather than feeling saddened by the women birthing on a cement block... I...

I thought the book was so well-written, and it was so interesting to read about Holloway's time spent with Monique. I found the most difficult and disturbing...
