I thought the book was so well-written, and it was so interesting to
read about Holloway's time spent with Monique.
I found the most difficult and disturbing part of the book was reading
about and envisioning all the complications from female genital
mutilation and the pain resulting from this horrific "ritual", from
daily urination to sex to birth.
In the Midwifery Today newsletter from this week there was actually a
link to an excerpt from "Monique..." as well as to an article about
birthing after having been mutilated, which is worth reading.

Many women are violated again and again, being cut and sewn back up
many times throughout their lifetime.
