If you feel the need for more people to talk to you might try
bit.listserv.transplant

plenty of posters there, from the world over, transplants of all
types (inc liver)

If you're newsreader is set up you should be able to read it via this link
news:bit.listserv.transplant

although I can't remember how AOL handles USENET newsgroups..

if not then this link
http://groups.google.com/groups?q=bit.listserv.transplant&ie=ISO-8859-1&hl=en
will take you to the list via google

Cheers

I would guess that the same applies to 'checking' a registration as
does to being removed..

You have to write. Registered post would minimise the the chance of
loss. I would guess that there is no requirement for them to tell you
when you've been added to the OD register, but then theres no
required protocol for patients to be told when they get added to the
'on call' list either. Its entirely up to the consultants discretion.

Yes, I have often thought that it would be helpful to be able to
confirm that you are actually on the database. Given the Data
Protection Act however I am not sure how it could be done. I suppose
ringing is a possibility but even then would the Act allow the staff
to tell you whether you were on the computer or not.

It would be nice to think that there are so many forms received daily
that it would be impractical for an acknowledgement of receipt to be
sent out, but I suspect that is cost rather than volume that means
that this does not happen.

As the husband of a someone waiting for a heart transplant I am eager
to ensure that as many names as possible are on the database. The
thought of any being lost in the post horrifies me.

Yep, it IS good that people are talking about it. I think the reports
on his 'queue jumping' (as one report put it, are merely media
misunderstanding of how the system works.. One report went as far as
to say that he got the op done sooner due to private health care,..
when in fact he has had a combination of NHS & private care as far as
I am aware.

Yes I too heard some fairly disparaging and alarmist remarks made on a few
tv and radio broadcasts regarding the distribution of 'this valuable
resource'. It disappoints me on one level - it reaffirms my opinion that a
frightening amount of mis-information still influences the general public
who have no 'first hand' knowledge of the selection process prior to a
transplant operation. On another level I knew that Best's transplant would
prove controversial - everyone is talking about not only HIS transplant, but
the wider issue of organ donation and transplantation - that has got to
good - surely!!

I have received a few 'phone calls qustioning Best's meteoric rise to the
front of the liver transplant queue. My respnse has been - his cross match
tests with the donated liver and (in the case of two suitable matches say)
his' clinical need' put him there, and we're none of us Angels!! (yet)

I think these people are being somewhat silly.

By their criterion everyone who has ever drank should be refused liver

If the criterion is that people shouldn't receive medical help for self
inflicted conditions then you might as well close down most of the

Because of software incompatibility and/or my limitations the Footer -
To select via Menu - address (URL) has become corrupted. (It's possible only
some of you will be affected).

For those who wish to persevere please remove all the amp; and space
insertions. Otherwise I have changed the Footer message to using the My Groups
webpage to find the appropriate page.

Now, hopefully, that's over how about some emails with queries/comments.

The last flurry of emails concerned the 'Presumed Consent Opt Out' Bill. As
expected the Second Reading in the House of Commons on April 19th did not
materialize. This was because of the number of other Bills. The 'Presumed
Consent Opt Out' Bill is therefore defunct.

A fresh interest is the UK Transplant requests for nominations for their
Patients' Group to advise on transplantation, see:

http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/newsroom/news_releases/news_releases.htm

This is your chance to 'air your views' to where it matters ie UK Transplant.

So lets be having them!

Personally I absolutely agree with what was stated in
the Bill. First, deceased body normally would be
burned to ashed in Hong Kong. That means everything
inside the body will be totally destroy. It's
meaningless to keep sth that will finally be destory.
Why not to donate them so that the will of the
deceased body will still "stay" in the living world? A
person's life is self-owned and doesn't belongs to
anybody else. So I think views of the donor's
relatives are NOT important unless there's proof that
the donor has confessed to his or her relatives that
he or she wouldn't like to be donor after death.

The number of patients who need organs transplant is
increasing sharply. But the sources of organs are
still very scarce. It would be nice if the Bill can be
legalized.

Hello!! You are a hero in amking that decision of
donating ur kidney to someone u don't know. :) I've
had a kidney transplant lately. The donor is my Mom.
However, unfortunately, after 22 days of the
transplant, there was blood clot and the new kidney
has to be removed.

During my stay in US, I met a gal like u, donating her
kidney to her best friend. It is legal in US. May be u
can take US as ur consideration. I admire the gal's
courage and her eagerness to save her best friend.
It's really touching.

I've resumed my dialysis right after the kidney was
taken. Now I'm arranging to have 2nd transplant in
China.

Speaking personally, it depends what is meant by the views of the relatives.
Some people use that to mean asking the relatives what the, sadly, deceased
would have wanted to happen or not happen. Whereas others mean actually
asking the relatives what they themselves want to happen or not happen. I am
all in favour of the former, it may be the only way of determining what the
deceased would have wanted. But to ask the newly bereaved if they themselves
want the organs of someone very close to them to be removed is, in my
opinion, both very insensitive and may prevent the wishes of the deceased
being carried out.

Provided age restrictions are adhered to (eg no under 18 donors without
parental/guardian consent) and the wishes of relatives are respected then I
wouldn't have any personal objections.

I would be concerned about negative publicity should a donation take place
because relatives could not be contacted in time and the relatives have
strong objections to organ/tissue donation. Whenever people have something
they perceive as being "forced" on them, the media generated backlash is
horrendous.

I a person hasn't registered a wish not to be an organ donor out loud or in
writing I think it should be up to the relatives. I tell everyone close to
me what my wishes are as well as stating it in writing or on my drivers
license. I know there are lots of people out there that have never even
given it a thought, it would be nice to be able to presume these dead
non-registered people all want to be donors. S.

On 20 March 2002, Mr Tom Watson MP will be introducing a 10 Minute Rule Bill on
Presumed Consent Opt Out.

This is believed to be the, so called, soft version. If a person has not
registered a wish not to be an organ donor then it can be presumed they wished
to be a donor. Should donation be a possibility then the views of the relatives
of the possible donor will be taken into account.

Do you have any views on this attitude or perhaps an alternative approach??

I'm in the process of giving one of my kidneys to someone I met over
the internet in the USA. I have tried to give it away to someone
here in the UK, but there is so much suspicion that I am trying to
sell my kidney (which I am not) as well as laws that prevent live
unrelated donations, that I could not do it. It's a shame. I look
forward to the day when these laws are changed to allow members of
the public to anonymously donate their kidneys like they can freely
donate blood. Email me with your responses/comments/questions at :

The Department of Health have carried out a survey to find the public response
to the Alder Hey outcry regarding retained organs and tissues.

In fact Alder Hey had a positive effect on donation for transplantation.

There were more organ donors than the same period in the previous year.
There were more under 5 years old children donors.
There were more people signing onto the NHS Organ Donor Register.

Reference: http://www.uktransplant.org.uk/b5a.asp?d=158&u=&p=

Despite positive information being released at the time of the media outcry
(Jan/Feb 01) recipient organisations, health professionals and the media all
decried the negative effect of Alder Hey.

How much better would the results have been if those spreading negative stories
had had a more positive attitude? Although, thank goodness, in this case the
public seem to have ignored the scaremongers!

The Framework outlined below, in a message from the DoH, has been on the www for
several months. Whilst this applies to Renal patients it could be a useful model
for other patients. There are now, or soon will be, available assist devices for
patients with heart, liver and lung complaints that will require a transplant.

The Renal National Service Framework: we want to hear your views!

The Department of Health is developing a National Service Framework (NSF) to
improve renal services, and we have launched an interactive website on
www.doh.gov.uk/nsf/renal.htm. You will find information there about the scope
of the NSF, and who is on our External Reference Group. The Renal NSF is in
four parts: the first, on the Effective Delivery of Dialysis, is expected next
year; the second is on Transplantation, to be followed by Primary Prevention and
Pre-Dialysis, and Alternative Models of Care.

We hope that you will use the website to give us your views, by contributing to
the discussion area, or by suggesting a standard for inclusion in the NSF. We
would like to hear all points of view, whether you use the service, provide it,
or just feel strongly about some aspect of it. So please, visit our website, and
have your say!

To help promote the NSF, the Bulletins‘ section of the website includes a
printable poster/handout for display.

If you do not have access to the internet at home, you can find it at many
public libraries. If you cannot get onto our website, however, you can still
write to us: please address your letters to Ms Jane Verity, Renal NSF,
Department of Health, Room 407 Wellington House, 133-155 Waterloo Road, London
SE1 8UG.

Paul and Group,

I have had a quick chat re Christmas Campaign. The Transplant Partnership (host
BMA) would be very pleased for the Campaign to have world wide exposure. One
point however the Campaign is specific to the UK ie email/website/tel. It can
be used as is or local details overlaid onto the artwork re labels and
Christmas Cards. I expect the Screen Saver might be a bit more difficult since
it is animated and comprises several picture files. Snail mail franking blocks
would be done locally anyway.

If you take up the idea, please let the Group know of any progress. It has
taken off like crazy here - Football and Rugby Clubs and many businesses
participating. I've done a radio interview and had other phone queries.

Has anybody else become involved???

The slight drawback being that take-up may not be too great
because of an email virus, currently proliferating fast, that
purports to be a screensaver ...

What a wonderful Idea! I wonder if the BMA would mind the idea being
promoted worldwide?

The Transplant Partnership, led by the British Medical Association, is
carrying out a Christmas campaign encouraging people to sign up to the NHS
Organ Donor Register with the slogan "Sign one more card this Christmas".

A screensaver ? showing Father Christmas deciding to sign one more card ? has
been designed and animated for the campaign. It also gives details of how to
join the organ donor register. Please install this onto your computer for
the month of December by following the simple instructions on the
Transplant Partnership's website:
http://www.bma.org.uk/transplant.nsf/docs/Christmas+campaign
(We are expecting high demand so if you encounter a slow response from the
server, please try again later.) Please also forward this E-mail to your
friends, family and colleagues and ask them to do the same.

There are currently nearly 7,000 people waiting for an organ transplant and
many will die before a suitable organ becomes available. Although 70% of the
population express a wish to donate organs after their death, only 15% of the
population have signed up to the organ donor register. This Christmas,
don't just think about it, but do something. You can sign up to the NHS
Organ Donor Register by telephoning 0845 60 60 400 or you can register
online at http://www.nhs.uk/organdonor so why don't you sign one more card
this Christmas?
