Hi Paul and Vicki,

Thank you for your congrats.

Yes, it would be good to see more action in BODY-UK. Due to some internal
difficulties within the previous BODY Trustees, I and other Trustees have had
our hands full getting back to a positive and progressive position.

This being achieved I will update you directly.

Wishing you and Vicki every success and good health,
John and Margaret

BODY-UK was launched on 3 January 2000 and currently has a membership of 77
subscribers. There have been 196 messages the last being sent on 7 July
2006,

Since the last message the Human Tissue Act 2004 has been fully implemented,
the Dept of Health has launched a schools education package on organ
donation
and transplantation and the Organ and Transplantation Task Force has
published
its Report with 14 recommendations to improve UK organ donation. Organs for
sale, Presumed Consent Opt Out and tourist transplants topics have been
greatly
discussed. Plenty of opportunity for discussion within BODY-UK.

BODY has had a difficult 15 months but has emerged with a stronger Committee
supported by 3 new and experienced officers. John and Margaret Evans are
pleased to be semi retired and were very pleased to accept the position of
BODY joint Presidents.

Comments welcomed.

Firefly television (www.fireflyproductions.tv) are developing a
programme about heart transplants, and the changes that some
recipients feel after they have a new heart. There have been a lot
of reports in the press about people who feel that they have new
traits and characteristics which must be related to their donors.
While the science behind this is in no way proven, we want to
represent, in a sensitive way, the journey that a person might go on
to find answers to why this has happened. Perhaps this involves
asking doctors, or perhaps it's just a question of happily absorbing
their new characteristics.

If you, or someone you know, has experienced this, and would like to
share your story with us, please do contact me. I will treat your
email or phone call in confidence.

BODY would appreciate your help with a research project.

We need to gain the attention of families that declined an organ and tissue
donation request when a relative died in hospital.

They have the opportunity to voluntarily participate in a University research
project to listen to their experiences and identify any needs they may have
had.

We would ask that they are told about the request for their involvement as
detailed on the BODY website Homepage:
http://www.argonet.co.uk/body or http://www.bodyuk.org/

If you do make contact with such a family, either directly or via a third
person, please let BODY-UK or body@... (or body@...) know but
with no family details.

Thank you

Hi my name is Rebecca and I am a member of Body, it is a great
organisation that I have gained a lot from over the years. I have
met some fantastic people at the conferences. I came across this
chat group very accidently, in fact I was looking for something very
different but hey i thought i would join whilst I was here. I had a
liver transplant 9 years ago when I was 17, I have done really well
and since been to university and got a degree in Law and
Criminology. I also compete at the World Transplant Games and
British games which I would not have been able to do without the
generosity of my donor family.

This request has been delayed but is an ongoing need for support and
information. Another chance to help to promote organ donation and
transplantation.

October Films Ltd. is currently researching a possible documentary
looking at the different faces of organ donation and the implications
for the families involved, both those who have chosen to help others
after the tragic loss of a relative and those whose lives have been
saved by an organ donation. We are looking for personal stories to
demonstrate the importance of organ donation through real life
experiences.

I would very much like to speak to anyone who would be willing to share
their story with me, whether you are currently waiting for a donor,
have helped others through a family member being a donor or you or your
family‘s life has been transformed by the kindness of a donor.
Please be assured that any conversation at this point would be entirely
confidential and would not commit you to any contribution to our
programme.

BODY receives many requests for information on Whole Body Donation (WBD) and how
to indicate the wish to be a WBD. Such donations benefit medical undergraduates
in understanding human anatomy. However the following invitation is a little
different.

Comments welcomed.

OPEN LETTER

Fulcrum TV is an award-winning independent television company currently
making a sensitive documentary for Channel 4‘s science department and
National Geographic Television. The film will throw new light on a
science and craft developed by the ancient Egyptians: the preservation
of the human body after death. The film will feature two of Britain‘s
leading historical scientists — a chemist and an Egyptologist - who
will be presenting and testing their ideas on precisely how the ancient
Egyptians, around the time of Tutankhamun, carried out the preservation
of the deceased among royalty and the aristocracy. If the two modern
scientists are proved right, their ideas will significantly change our
views about the sophistication of the ancient Egyptians as scientists.

The scientists will carry out a number of tests in an attempt to
reconstruct in exact detail the process employed by the ancient
Egyptians to create the most beautifully preserved of human remains.
Once this process is established, they want to apply this knowledge on
a human being, with that person‘s (and his or her family‘s) consent.

We are particularly keen to talk to someone who, faced with the
knowledge of their own terminal illness and all that that entails,
would nonetheless consider taking part in this experiment and this
film. Our ambition is broader than the scientific detail; we want to
explore our present-day attitudes to life, death and the afterlife.
Our supposition is that these attitudes and ideas may not be so
different to those of the ancient Egyptians.

Parallels will be drawn between the ancient Egyptians‘ extensive
planning for death and our contributors‘ emotional, spiritual and
practical preparation for the same fate. We will speak to them in depth
about their past, their hopes and fears for their death, their opinions
on the afterlife and the legacy they hope to leave behind.

We‘re therefore hoping to find someone who will share this most private
of experiences with us and embrace the making of this documentary as an
opportunity to express themselves, to educate and to perhaps give
comfort to others. We will also want to involve, with their permission,
the individual‘s family and closest friends in the film.

If you feel you may be interested in participating in the project or
would like more information on what it might involve, please contact
me, Joanne, on

0207 939 3175 or email joannet@...

Contacting me in no way obligates you to take part in the documentary.

Many thanks for taking the time to read this letter,

Joanne

Hi

It seems that we are never too old to raise Kidney Donor awareness.

please see www.just70.co.uk

My Aunt thought, 'how can she celebrate her 70th birthday in style
– and also support a couple of charitable causes that she is
passionate about?'
Therefore to celebrate becoming Just 70, here's what she is
going to do : Run 7 miles - Walk 70 miles -Bicycle 70 miles-Swim 1
mile -Horse-ride 7 miles -Climb 7 Tors - Canoe 7
miles ............................all in 7 weeks

I'd be most grateful if members pass the details of this newly

Hi Colin
Great to see some action in this e-mail group it's been fairly quiet aroun'
these parts :-)))
I must admit to having similar sentiments regarding the "queue jumpers" as you
call them!
I know this certainly goes on in the US,where money talks, where there is no
real regulatory system for organ donation unlike here in the UK.
Honestly I can't say I've heard of the same thing happening here but 'cos I
ain't heard of it doesn't mean it doesn't go on!
The chances of you acctually being in a position to become a potential organ
donor are SO slim anyway but I'd tend to have the opinion that if even one life
could be transformed or better still saved by any part of my body then go ahead
take what's usable but as I say if I become privaledged to be an organ donor the
idea fills me with warmth at that thought in life.... but the chances of me
leaving this life of mines in the neccesary way.. ach who knows?
I'm the mother of a child fortunate enough to have received the gift of life,he
was aged 3yrs at the time he's now 8 and living a normal, albeit wild and
frantic, typical wee boy's lifestyle! This most definately would never have been
possible without a wonderful mum out there who lost her son (aged 10) to a hit
'n' run incident, who consented to her son's organs being donated...that little
lad's family find comfort in the fact that 3 childrens' lives were saved and
dramatically transformed!
If you have any doubts Colin do not register as a potential organ donor, sadly at
the time of your passing away you wouldn't have a clue who would benefit from
your donated organs and if that's an issue with you then why question how you
already feel?
On the other hand if you would happily give freely you can register here...

Hoping you can make your decision and get on with life....

I would gladly become an organ donor but I am on income support and
I do not want my organs to go to anyone who has bought themselves a
higher place in the queue than ordinary poor folk like myself have
to be satisfied with.

In the vernacular - I don't want bits of me going to queue jumpers.
I find people who jump the queue using their superior financial
position to buy themselves a privileged place to be morally
reprehensible and if there is the slightest possibility that any of
these selfish people could benefit from my death then I am unable to
be a donor, much as I would like to be.

Is there any way I can get round this?

Our seventh grade class at Vailsburg Middle School is working on a
school project to promote healthy living and getting the word out
about organ donation and transplantation. My students would very
much like to find a real person to cheer up. It would add
authenticity to our project and our children would learn a lot about
the joy of giving and generosity. We would like do something to
encourage a child who is waiting for a transplant or has had a
transplant. We could send ecards and a package of some kind to
encourage and cheer up this child but we need to know how to find
students in such situations. Does anyone have any ideas? Our students
would be able to send emails but we need parent's email addresses.

Hi Brian
That's a question we all must ask at some point!
It's my 8yr old son who's the recipient and I am in contact with who I call his
donor mum,she lost her 10yr old son 4 yrs ago and his organs were donated to
save more than just my lad's life!
I personally would like to meet someday and I know of families who have done
this and benefited from it.
My son's still too young to fully understand where his new tummy and liver came
from and until he enquires himself I'm not volunteering the info, when he's ready
and IF he wants to meet the donor family then it's something we'll tackle slowly
and carefully.
Are you a donor or recipient yourself?

Caroline is petite or to use her words, "I'm only little".
Her number is 09704. She will be in black shorts and BODY T shirt or possibly a
plain green T shirt.
Mind you she is one of 33,000+ runners, so seeing her will be an achievement in
itself. Hopefully a TV commentator will be luckier!!

This is Caroline's first marathon event.

Wishing her Good Luck

Caroline Harvey is running the Flora London Marathon this Sunday and has chosen
BODY as her Charity for donations. She has no direct involvement in
transplantation. The link is that she is employed by the Cambridge Building
Society (CBS) and BODY is based in a village within the postal town, Cambridge.

Whilst most of us will be sitting at home watching the Marathon on TV, Caroline
will be pounding the 26+ miles of the Marathon.

Please thank her for her efforts to promote organ donation and support BODY with
a donation via:

http://www.justgiving.com/CBS-BODY

This donation page will be active for some several weeks after the Marathon for
your, or your friends, donations.

Thank you
John

PS
There is £100 listed so far! It would be fantastic to double this sum as a
thanks to Caroline.
NOTE - JustGiving will retrieve tax value applicable to your donation increasing
the sum donated by a further ~28%

Michelle Boyle ran the London Marathon some 26.2 miles in 4h27m. This was her
first marathon which she completed despite the fact she was recovering from a
previous knee injury. Her singlet promoted BODY and organ donation. However, we
all owe Michelle a debt of gratitude (if not a donation!). She is a New
Zealander and is a nurse at Guys Hospital, London, where she is helping out
because of our staff shortages! More poignantly her brother died in 2001 and
was a mutli-organ donor. Michelle's marathon run, in memory of her brother, was
also to raise funds for her chosen charity BODY - please see end of this page.

Deborah Duval is currently walking the 117 miles from Oxford to Westminster.
She will be arriving at College Green (aka Abingdon Green) Westminster at about
2.30 - 3.00pm this Bank Holiday Monday. This is the end of her 117 Mile Walk.
Again she has been very successful in promoting the need for organ donors and
also BODY. Deborah is a kidney pancreas recipient who has since had a
replacement kidney transplant. She is not in the best of health since she now
needs a replacement pancreas transplant. But despite this she has made
excellent progress and has attracted much media involvement and dignitary
support in increasing public awareness regarding organ donation. Deborah would
also welcome donations in support of her demanding effort.

You can see more information on http://www.argonet.co.uk/body/friends.html

You can donate as follows:
Michelle Boyle: http://www.justgiving.com/kiwirunner
Deborah Duval: http://www.justgiving.com/Duval
or directly to BODY: http://www.justgiving.com/charity/body

Please tell your friends, colleagues and contacts.

Thank You
John Evans

Test Predicts Kidney Transplant Rejection
Wed April 2, 2003 05:55 PM ET
By Hannah Cleaver

BERLIN (Reuters Health) - German scientists say they are close to developing
a post-transplant testing procedure that can identify early signs that
kidney transplant patients are rejecting the donated organ.

Under the direction of Professor Gerhard Opelz, the Heidelberg University
Hospital team has already developed a test to identify kidney transplant
patients most at risk of rejection.

It works by measuring blood levels of soluble CD30 -- a protein found on the
surface of certain white blood cells. In a study involving nearly 4,000
patients, published last year, Opelz and Dr. Caner Suesal found that the
higher the sCD30 level, the more likely a rejection reaction.

"This works as a predictive factor and we are now trying to establish its
importance in the early post-transplantation period to foresee an impending
rejection," Suesal told Reuters Health.

He said that pre-transplant tests could help doctors decide what regimen of
immunosuppressant drugs should be prescribed for a particular patient.

Those patients at greater risk can immediately be put on higher doses,
increasing the chance of success, while those at lesser risk can be put on
lower doses, reducing the risk of drug side-effects such as infections and
even cancers.

In February of this year, the team published the results of a small study
using the technique in post-transplant patients, in order to predict the
onset of rejection problems.

The study included 45 patients in the first days after transplantation. A
high level of sCD30 predicted the early onset of rejection several days
earlier than it was possible to determine using a biopsy of the transplanted
kidney.

"What is done at the moment is that if there is the suspicion of rejection,
around 10 days after transplantation, a biopsy is taken -- but this is
invasive," said Suesal.

"It would be much better if you could foresee the rejection in the
immunological process. This way we can identify patients with impending
rejection three to five days after transplantation."

"There are anti-rejection treatments which are very effective and
successful, but because of the side-effects they should be given to those
who need them."

He said he was looking at a routine which would take blood tests twice in
the first week after transplantation and then twice more by the 22nd day.

The test is cheap and easy to conduct, he said, costing around five euros
(US $5.38) each time and taking just four hours for a result.

Now, a further large-scale study is underway to try to confirm the results
of the smaller one. "This should be finished by the end of the year," he
said.

"Assuming that the bigger study goes as expected I would want everyone
receiving kidney transplants to get these tests."

The tests are not expected to work so easily with transplants of other
organs because long-term dialysis treatment experienced by nearly all kidney
transplant patients promotes the differentiated production of sCD30.

Was anybody able to catch the documentary on channel 4, sat. 25th Jan?
I think it is high time that the legislators here in the UK actually
DID something about changing the laws here in the UK to allow
for 'samaritan donations' (as they are referred to in the US). There
are rigid safeguards in place, in the US system, to ensure that only
people who are suitable are able to donate. It could work here as
well, if the medical establishment could put aside their own
prejudices. When will they make these changes? I hope that this
documentary may inspire someone out there, who is in a position of
authority in this field, to start acting. And I hope that it may
also inspire others out there to want to donate themselves. It
showed me that even ordinary people can achieve something wonderful
for someone else. You too can help to save someone's life.
