I am not new to the area and I hope somebody knows something. I have
been looking for years. There are waiting lists at the U of M and
Michigan State is not accepting new patients. Welcome to Battle Creek.
OK, like as if I'm not insane enough already...but I just brought home
two of my neices' puppies that she is desparetly trying to give away!!
She has the mom and dad and 6 puppies!!!! She is having a hard time
caring for them, so I decided to help her and bring a couple up here
(she lives in Coldwater) to try to get rid of.
Soooo, if you want or know someone that would love a lab mix puppy -
call me!!! I have one black and one reddish blonde (males), there
three more blonde and one black and tan in Coldwater. They are 12
weeks old. Kinda rowdy, as you would expect, but when the lights are
out they are totally quiet!!! (I'm a little amazed at that). Dad is a
black lab and mom is a blonde lab and pit mix - both very good
temperments. These dogs shouldn't get over 65-70 lbs full grown -
maybe.
p.s. have I also mentioned that we already have two large dogs?????
So the sooner the better! :) Please pass it on! My number is 967-
1212.

I was sorry I couldn't be there last night for the Support Group meeting, but that is a crazy time of day [and a crazy week, too]. I'm glad you guys selected another "night out" time; I agree that was fun and the time is a little easier for me since that is when my ASD child is in bed! I would encourage those of you desperate for a break to join us!
Okay...we will be going out for drinks (alcoholic or not-your choice)
on THURSDAY DEC 6, 2007. We are meeting at the Battle Creek Applebees
(in the mall) at 8pm. (apparently from 9pm on their appetizers are
half price!!!) We had a great time last month when we got together, it
was good to relax with other people who have similiar issues-hope you
all can come:)
The second important date is TUESDAY, DECEMBER 11, 2007. This is our
next support group meeting at DKDC. Same time as always-6-7:30pm, call
Shannon for childcare and since it is our last meeting before the
holidays we have decided to do a potluck of sorts-(we always are
hungry.lol) So, bring in a dish to pass (we aren't picky-I'd be happy
with some Oreos=] )
Mark your calanders-hope to see you all at both events!
Have a great Turkey Day!!!

You are invited to attend the first meeting of Michigan ACTION (Autism Coalition Targeting Insurance, Options and Networking). ACTION has been recently developed by several organizations who are joining together to make needed changes for families of individuals with autism across the state of Michigan. The first issue for the Michigan ACTION Team is work toward appropriate insurance coverage for individuals with autism. Legislation for insurance reform has been introduced by Senator Tupac Hunter (SB No. 784 and No. 785). Companion bills are going to be introduced by Representative Kathy Angerer at a press release on December 4th, with House hearings scheduled for December 13th.
The first Michigan ACTION meeting will be held at Judson Center in Royal Oak on Wednesday, Nov. 28th at 7 pm. If you can’t come to the Royal Oak office in person, there will be an opportunity for you to call in and participate via conference call. Please RSVP to
Stephanie_Harlan@... or call 248-837-2109 to confirm your attendance at this meeting and to get more details. Judson Center is located at 4410 W. 13 Mile Road, at the corner of Greenfield and 13 Mile.
Michigan ACTION is also pleased to announce a new web forum which was created specifically for this coalition:
www.michiganaction.org. Please take a moment to sign into this web forum and read and reply to issues regarding the current needs of our autism community in Michigan. This web forum will serve as an interactive means of gathering autism advocates from around the state, discussing needs and options available, networking with one another, and being able to present one, unified voice in the state of Michigan. Together, this coalition can accomplish great things in paving a pathway to enhance the lives of all individuals affected by autism.
Thank you for your participation in Michigan ACTION and we look forward to a great first meeting!
I got this website at the same conference as Mary and only briefly looked at it,
but thought it looked good too. Tresia

We have Tyler on a GF/CF diet and it is really effective for us as well. It is more time consuming and expensive, but for the results we've seen, it is totally worth it. We added back gluten and casein for a week in order to test Tyler's sensitivity and that is when we really noticed a huge difference. He was just very zoned out and lethargic, and seemed to lose some body awareness and tone. In addition, he developed an itchy rash that we hadn't seen in months but had forgotten about! By the way, his test came back showing that he had no toxicity or sensitivity to either gluten or casein, but we still notice a huge difference. However, we don't have to be super careful like Heather does. I have a 10 month old who is not on the diet and occasionally I will catch Tyler sneaking a goldfish or two. So far I haven't noticed that small amounts affect him negatively.
We just tested Tyler for yeast overgrowth and found that this is a significant problem for him. It is very common in autistic kids, so if you haven't gone there yet, it may be something to think about. We are beginning treatment today to kill off his yeast, and supposedly the next month or two could be really hard because as the die off occurs, behavior can worsen significantly. Fun, fun!!!
I hope the diet works for you. I think it is definitely worth a try.

Okay, I have had my kids on this diet for about 3 years now, we are actually more than just gf/cf now...
(btw Mary I have always heard that spelt is not gf/cf acceptable...)
To answer your questions Connie-it is more expensive than regular food, but I have noticed a big difference in both of my kids, so it is worth it for me. Now most people don't see any difference for at least a couple of weeks. I didn't really notice a change until my daughter got ahold of something she shouldn't have had and had a horrible reaction (rash, headache, screaming non stop, waking up in the middle of the night, bowel issues) and that was from 1 goldfish cracker. At that time I was unsure the diet was doing any good, but that was enough proof for me. On the website, in the picture section there are photos of my daughter's face before and after the diet-she hasn't had red cheeks like that since we have been gf/cf.
You asked if it was time consuming and honestly at first it is...you have to read all the labels on everything and then your child may also go through a withdrawal period. Everyone in the house has to get used to not having "regular" food around the person on the diet, unless the whole family is going on it (we didn't-I don't like the food). There are a lot of options of gf/cf out there right now as far as snack foods and if you can get them to eat meat, veggies, and fruit...well my kids eat better than most kids their age. They aren't big veggie fans, but they also don't get alot of candy or sweets-so I figure it all equals out:)
My son will drink almond milk, but my daughter never found a substitute milk that she was fond of, so we just make sure she gets her calcium and such from other foods or vitamins.
If you have any other questions, feel free to contact me.
We tried the diet for 6 months with Alex. No changes. I do, however, recommend it to people who have bowel issues like constipation or diarrhea or both. A lot of people who do this diet, do feel better. Yes, it is time consuming if you want GOOD food. If you are willing to make your own breads, use SPELT flour. It is not related to wheat and bakes the most like wheat. Even though we're not on any particular diets anymore, I still bake with it. I would recommend getting allergy tested. If your child is lactose intolerant, the allergy tests will not show this. I just had Joy tested Tues. She isn't allergic to anything, but definintely is lactose intolerant. The Dairy Ease tablets help her. I have done research on goat's milk and cheese and sheep's cheese (picorino). Everyone has stated that even though they were allergic to cow's milk, they did very well with goat's and sheep's milk/cheese. Joy did well on them, too. (w/o dairy ease tabs). think?
OK. Big news hit my e-mail this morning. Trina, the ASA
President is stepping down and is asking if I would like to take over.
There are also a lot of people currently on the board who will be stepping
down. I am unsure of myself. I want to know what you all
think. This can take any turn or twist or direction. If someone out
there feels compelled to be the president, please step up. However, maybe
with some strong coaxing, I'll at least think about it. Please respond
ASAP.
Thank you.
