Thursday evening is better for me.  If we did it Monday, I'd have to meet you all after 6:30.  Either way, I'd like to get out with y'all.

OK - I think we all need a night out - Any ideas for a good time?
Heather works on Friday and Saturday nights - (I think that's what she
said). I may be able to swing a Monday or Thursday night if Ed is
home that night (otherwise I would have to come out after 9:30).

What are other thoughts??

Hey all. I hope all is well with you and yours.
Just a quick bit of news.
My long-time friend is creating his own poker supply company / poker room and I will be running it for him. We are aiming to launch April 20th.
What we are looking to do is make some money for any non-profit organizations that may be interested in being involved.

If you are involved with or know of any non-profit organization, PTO, high school booster club, Autism society and so on... and they may be interested please get back with me. The organization simply needs to prove they are non-profit (501 type, having bi-laws, Articles of Incorporation) to the city upon submitting the forms etc.

*Also, we will look to run as many tables as possible each night, especially tournaments, so if you like playing cards I will hope to see you at the tables!
** If your love is dealing the cards, dealers are paid cash each night - let me know about that as well, or let someone know that may be interested.

I'll keep this particular email short and can get into much greater detail (how many days you are allowed by law, training you etc...) of course upon interest.
Thanks so much in advance for getting back with me, and passing this on to anyone this may apply to. Even if it doesn't apply to you and I haven't seen you in a while - let me know how you are doing!

Take care all, see you soon!

We shared a wonderful experience this morning,
   My son and I
We walked together as the sun rose behind the clouds
   We walked in the snow.

The snow fell with discipline, straight down
With no wind to dictate to it
Where it's new resting place would be.

I pointed out the sounds of birds chirping and whistling,
The cars and trucks on the highway in the distance.
We slid in the freshly made car tracks, like cross-country skiing!
He learned how to slide in the slippery tracks.

We walked quite a distance, for at each intersection I'd ask,
Which way do you want to go, this way or that way?
He'd point further and further away from home.

It was quiet and fun.  We were very happy together....
Until he had to go pee and we had to run home
As fast as we could!!!  Of course he'd have to pee when
We were the furthest from home we could possibly be.

Still, it was a wonderful experience, he following in my footsteps
Reminding me when I was a child.  I used to step into my mother's
Footsteps while walking behind her in the snow.
Alas, we made it home, no damage done.

Hi,
My name is D.J. Svoboda. I am an Autistic artist. I have just drawn a new
picture in honor of Autism Awareness. We are selling the beautiful 11x14 print
for $50.00. Normally the picture would sell for $75.00($5.00 per letter) but
because it is a print it is only $50.00. A portion of all I make from selling
the print will be donated to various Autism organizations in honor of Autism
Awareness month. You can learn more about my art and my mission for acceptance
for those with Autism by visiting my website @ www.MyImagiville.com. Thank you
and have a great blessed day.

We had a GREAT meeting last night.  We had good attendance and a well rounded room discussion.  I  think the parents that attended really enjoyed the meeting and got some useful information.

Our next board meeting is Feb. 24, 2009.  If you want something added to the agenda please let me know.  We will be discussing board elections at that meeting.  I will be making ballots after that meeting so we can mail them out to our members.  I am hoping that you will know at that meeting whether you plan to run for election again or not.  Also we will be voting for  officers so if you want one of the following positions I will need to know that also.  Also if you know someone interested in getting on our board please have them attend the meeting in March.   The new board will take over in May.
President
Vice President
Secretary
Treasurer
Chairman of the Board

Our walk is coming up.  One of the things we are working on is gathering brochures and information from agencies that service children with autism.  We need at least 200 brochures from each place.  If there is a place that you go to and is willing to give the brochures please let Kai know.  Her e-mail is kkotts@....  She is working on this.  Also if there is a place that you think would be good to put in our bags - send her the info. Our goody bags this year will contain information as well as prizes and treats.

We have another general meeting on March 10th.  We will be talking about Adult Issues.

Ken and I will be going to the Nationals meeting on March 22nd.  We will find out more information about the chapter restructure there.  We will keep you updated on that.  Ken is going to participate in the teleconference before that.  I think that is just a basic overview of what was said at the last meeting and planning details for the upcoming meeting in March.

Any comments or questions - send me an e-mail.

Thanks
Trina

I've been told that when you have an issue with the school district and want help to deal with it, you can get an "advocate."

Can anyone tell me more about how this system works? Whom do you call to get an advocate?

Thanks!

Most children with autism are diagnosed at or before age three. There
are times when it is obvious that there might be a problem, and other
times things can go unnoticed. Children with classic autism have
signs and symptoms that are rather obvious. However, those with
higher functioning forms like Asperger's may not show signs that are
not so easy to pick up on. No matter why type of function these
children have, there are some things that are used in diagnosing
autism that will be noticed in all children. Parents with concerns
should see a doctor for proper diagnosis.
Parents are the first step in diagnosis, but doctors may notice
problems before a parent. There are many signs they can see as early
as age one. A child with autism will be slow to speak or communicate,
if they do so at all. They may be over stimulated or under stimulated
by noises and actions. They may play alone, and they may also use
repetitive motions. Some children might also be super sensitive to
touch, and may cry out when held. Others may have tantrums that seem
to come from things that other children handle well. Sometimes the
smallest change in daily routine can trigger a tantrum. They might
also ignore others, and cannot seem to maintain eye contact with
anyone they don't know. Many have problems with delayed motor skills,
and might appear to be very clumsy....

I wanted to let you know that Bob Brown will be coming to the Battle Creek support group tonight, Tuesday at the Doris Claussen Developmental Center (408 Jamison) at 6pm.  He's only going to speak for 15-20 minutes, unless there is a lot of interest and questions.  If you'd like to come, you are more than welcome.  They do provide childcare as well.  They hold the childcare in the therapy room which is SOOO cool!  The kids love it.  Shannon Porter runs this group and her number for childcare is 269-964-2136 ext. 231.

For those of you not privy, I would like to start a meditation class for special needs people.  If young children are involved, the parents would need to sit with their kids.  It would be held at Community Inclusive Recreation Art Center in Battle Creek for one half hour, once a week.  We are trying to figure out a good time that's best for all to meet.  Weekday evenings?  Weekends?  Bob Brown runs a Buddhist meditation class Wed evenings in BC, however, this class has a non-theistic theme.  People of all faiths can come to this and benefit from it.  It is simply a tool that can be used for those that may need help calming their busy minds or to help them better focus.  It may be good for some, and not for all, but worth a try.

You can check out his website at www.Sokukoji.org.   If you are interested, please come to the BC support group tonight.  Otherwise, you can call me at 269-665-4620 if you need more info.  Bob's contact info is at his website.

Hope to see you tonight!

I wanted to offer these as a resource to folks so that others can see how individuals with ASD may react to situations.  After these clips there are also interviews with individuals discussing their personal experiences.  These are very powerful and can be used as educational tools for eduational and awareness programs.

Please feel free to pass these on and vist the NAS website and review their "Think Differently About Autism" campaign.

Randy Haugen at Battle Creek Counseling Associates is awesome.  I have also heard that Kristen Tenny-Blackwell (not sure of the spelling) out at Oaklawn Psychiatric Services  ( I believe this is where she is…someone correct me if I am wrong) is very good.

Does anyone know of a good behavioral therapist? I am unfortunately at my wits end with my son (who is 4 and not diagnosed, but undoubtable on the spectrum). His behavior has become unmanagable and I am out of ideas. He has irrational fears of normal things, throws tantrums anytime he is told no, is becoming violent to himself and others, is not able to calm himself (nor are the typical OT methods working). It kills me to ask for assistance b/c I think I should just be able to handle a child, but he is very headstrong.. .for example he refused to use his arm for over a month, we went to drs, had xrays and an mri done...end result: nothing was wrong. He was just choosing not to use it. Now he has a great disdain for the way we have changed the living room furniture around for Xmas. He refuses to come in the living room and if he has to go through the room (which is often since it is right off the front door) he insists on running or being carried and covering his eyes. He doesn't seem to be having problems at other locations with Christmas and he won't tell me if there is something in particular he dislikes.  He just cries, screams, tantrums, etc.  I do expect some tantrums, but they are becoming excessive.  It doesn't appear to be food related. He is also anxious quite a bit-which is fairly new. I hestiate to use meds on my kids (complete last resort), so I am hoping that we can manage these things without them and help him out of this stage...anybody know anyone good???

Heather, I’m sorry to hear that things are so difficult right now!!  I respect that you have the wisdom and strength to ask for help.  Kristen Tenney-Blackwell is in private practice in Marshall, and there are some others at Oaklawn that families I know have seen.  Conni Lutes has a private practice in Kalamazoo as well and if she doesn’t have spots, maybe she knows someone who does.

I hope things calm down soon for all of you.
