Here are some things I've done, and haven't done, with Alex in Kzoo.
We are currently enrolled in Greater Kalamazoo World of Gymnastics
located by Midlink off of Cork (2723 Kersten Ct. Kzoo. Ph 381-5749.
They have pretty much 1 to 1 ratio. Alex has a bit of free reign
there, but they seem to trust he won't get hurt. They take them
young. Joy, Alex's sister is almost 3 and she is in it, although she
is neurotypical. Most of the current class is between 5 and 8 yrs
old. Alex is two weeks away from 6. He really LOVES it. He was
taking TaeKwondo, but he didn't like the structure, I believe. $46
for 8 week sessions + $30 annual membership.
Climb Kalamazoo. PH 385-9891. Climbing walls. Located across from
Radisson Hotel (west of it). I have not had Alex in this yet, but
was told Mark was a Psych major with developmental focus.
I believe Walker TaeKwondo has a special needs class. This is not
the place Alex went to. The one Alex went to no longer offers
special needs class. Ph.327-7000.
Swimming classes are offered at both Borgess and Bronson for special
needs people.
Simply the Best by Ann Platte. Ph 377-9442. She works out of the
Portage school district. She tries to get kids to work with other
kids in sports activities. Right now, she is working with Alex
alone. He's only seen her 3 times now. But, each time she sees him,
he gets used to her and does more for her. She's a bit expensive to
me. $90 if with other kids, $180 if alone, for 4 weeks. It's her
choice if she thinks your kid can work well with others. We'll see
how it goes.
APSO soccar. I have Alex enrolled for the Fall. It will be
interesting.
Challenger Little League. You can find them on-line. Child must be
6 to play. We might look into it next year.
Parent to Parent of SW Michigan does stuff periodically. They just
had a music/lunch session at Oshtemo Library for free to parents and
children with special needs. I took Alex. We had fun. Their
website is www.p2pswmi.org.
I'm sure there's more, but I can't think of anything now. Hope it
was helpful.
