As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaahi wa barakaatuh.
We just wanted to take a minute to inform you of something
interesting here at Umm Al-Quraa University in Makkah.
The university, by a direct order from its director, Dr. Naasir As-
Saalih, has loosened its restrictions for foreign students who hope
to study in the colleges. According to Dr. Naasir, this change was
supposed to take place much earlier.
The university now requires the 'Arabic Language Institute graduates
to have a "mumtaaz" (90% or higher) average for their studies in the
language program. Upon graduation, "mumtaaz" students are forwarded
directly to the colleges.
This is a big difference from the past. Students used to have to
have a "mumtaaz" average (overall and in the final year as well),
pass further examinations, produce letters of recommendation, and
then wait 1-2 years (and sometimes more) to be selected to enter one
of the colleges. Many students gave up waiting and went home.
Because of these difficulties, rumors began to spread that "Umm Al-
Quraa does not accept non-Saudis into its colleges." This was never
true, however some years only a small handful of non-Saudi students
trickled into the colleges.
Over 40 students from the Language Institute this semester alone,
including those at the women's branch, have entered colleges, which
marks the highest acceptance rate for many years.
Your brother,
Abul-'Abbaas
