Michael -
Following up on B-Fit? Sig -
Great meeting.
I need to pay dues, but to whom?
Send me your personal e-mail, so I don't have to keep bothering the whole group!

Am still interested in possibly working on "directions for behavior analysis in sport" paper with you and others - others?

Jodi,
Thank you very much for the suggestion. We think it's great and would like to "showcase" it on our poster at ABA. Would you send me your abstract and any data from the article (if possible). I think it would be great to show some applications in the field. We could also use a description of your clinical work in the field, as well as anything else you think would fit nicely into the poster
Thanks

Amanda,
I apologize for leaving out these events. I scoured the program and thought I caught everything. I will send out a supplement that explains the error. I think it's important that everyone knows about these workouts.
Shall we start talking about the poster? Do you remember some of the ideas we had last year to make it better? I remember talking about a graph that depicted increases in B-Fit memberships, does that ring a bell?

Thanks for all your hard work on the newsletter Ralph. I always like getting a "heads up" on ABA events. It is exciting to see Rick's rock climbing and Bobby's Martial Arts Workout in the schedule this year. However, it seems that two more workout opportunities for this year's ABA were not included in the newsletter...most unfortunately, these 2 workouts were scheduled agianst each other (maybe one of these days we can get them to cut us a break!). I have listed them below. It seems this year we have the opportunity to be a VERY FIT group!!

#280 Sunday, May 25th 7:00 p.m. Room: Salon 11: Pilates Exercise Session: Kim Lucker

#284 Sunday, May 25th 7:00 p.m. Room: Nob Hill:  Yoga Workout Session: Amanda Adams

Hi Ralph,
Just got the newsletter. Thanks for getting one out before ABA! Your
editing looked good. I apologize for not getting my balance study info. to
you for the newsletter. I just haven't had time to put it in a usable
format for you to include in the newsletter and I didn't just want to send
you my slides to work off of. I'll do better next time.

So what's new with you? How's work, school, personal life? I can't wait to
see you at ABA.
Miss ya,
Kim

Ralph,

The call for submissions looks great.  Below please find the list of
journals our Yahoo Group generated during discussion on potential
publication outlets for work in health, sport, and fitness.  Obviously, this
is not exhaustive, but perhaps would justify a small spot on outlets or
research resources.  Your call.

Keep up the good work!

Amanda Adams is doing a Power Yoga workout and Kim Lucker is doing a Pilates workout. These are two seperate events as we had such an overwhelming demand last year. We submited these events ourselves after consulting with the Health, Sports and Fitness SIG. The new president is Micheal Kirpatrick...he is reachable through the ABA web-site. The best way to talk about/submit workouts is by either doing it...or by being in touch with SIG members (since those involved in the Sports, Health and Fitness SIG are usually the ones doing the workouts). We encourage anyone who is not attending our yearly business meetings to do so and become part of a great group. Thank-you for your interest.

Is anyone interested in doing our workouts again this year? I can
do my martial arts one, and have asked Cathy Sales and some others
to join me in an official capacity, if we going ahead.

Obviously, the deadline looms, so please provide feedback.

Meeting Notes: Workshop Consideration
SIG Meeting at ABA, 2002, Toronto, Canada
Dear B-FIT SIG members:
Below please find our meeting notes regarding a workshop at ABA 2003. I have
not yet received suggestions either for workshops or symposia, so I
reiterate the invitation to you to e-mail me with your ideas. In the absence
of direction from the membership, I'll plot a course as best I can to
maintain momentum so that when folks return from vacations, sabbaticals, and
project activities we have an outline upon which to build.
I've run through the ABA 2002 convention program and listed, in order of
their occurrence, all the workshop prices. I do not know how much latitude
is permitted by ABA in scheduling workshop duration or days/times, but I
offer this summary of what was done this year as a starting place. I counted
40 workshops: 14 were all-day (7 hour) affairs (10 a.m.-5 p.m.) on Friday,
May 24, 14 were 3-hour evening presentations on Friday, and 12 were 3-hour
morning events (8-11) on Saturday.
If we are to consider a workshop, we need to decide how long it will run,
what topic(s) to include, and who presents it. Toward those ends, I invite
you to e-mail me with...
(a) topics you would like to see or think others would be interested in. Be
as detailed as you can be, or as vague as you need to be. This is just to
generate alternatives to enrich our discussion.
(b) topics you would be willing and able to present, again, with as much
detail as you can muster including learning objectives, abstract, target
audience, duration if possible. Alternatively, drop me a loose title idea so
I know you're thinking about it.
(c) proposed audiences, pricing, or other issues that you think might guide
the process.
Ralph--would you please forward some advertising information? Perhaps call
one sample paper and get prices, required lead time, etc. so we have some
concrete example to consider. If you can brainstorm a list of possible
papers/periodicals and list them, perhaps others in the group would have
insights into which would serve us best?
I'll send a follow-up note addressing symposia in the days to come. I hope
everyone is having a wonderful summer. If you can find time to put a few
minutes into helping the SIG organize, rest assured your efforts will be
greatly appreciated.
Warm regards,
Michael Kirkpatrick

Thanks so much for the info! Sounds like this is definitely a program
I will be applying to. I have my doctorate schools narrowed(?) down
to 27 now, and I plan on actually applying to 10...Thanks! :)

The School of Physical Activity and Educational Services in the College of
Education at OSU, houses the Sport and Exercise Sciences group. There are
three clear tracks in that group...sport and exercise science, sport
management, and sport pedagogy.

In sport and exercise science they have moved away from lab approaches to
more applied work. Dr. Janet Buckworth is the exercie behavior specialist,
but there is also another faculty member who started in health education
but whose work eventually landed him with the exercice behavior group.
Janet is not an ABAer, but knows the ABA approach and certainly values it.

In the sport pedagogy group, Dr. Phil Ward (an australian who trained with
me) is the leading ABAer in sport pedagogy in the world...he just published
an interesting review paper on all the ABA research in physical
education...paper is in the Journal of Teaching in Physical Education.

For doc students, the other possibility is that the special ed group in the
College of Education is totally ABA (John Cooper, Bill Heward, Tim Heron,
Gwen Cartledge, Stephanie Peterson, Nancy Neef). It is quite possible for
doc students in other parts of the college (e.g., sport and exercise
science) to do a cognate in spec ed (which, in fact, at the doc level, is
an ABA program, not a special ed program) and have a member of that group
on their committee.

I retired from faculty life last year after a few years of being Dean of
the College...I now administer a university wide program aimed at improving
academic performance in urban schools in Ohio.

Oops, I forgot to add that the program I was looking at was at Ohio
State...I also see, upon reading more of the older posts, that this
is where Daryl Siedentop is from. OSU seems like a definite
possibility, along with a few others that admittedly wouldn't be
sports-specific...

Thanks for the reply-do you (or anyone else here) know anything in
particular about the doctoral programs in either sport and exercise
science or sport and exercise management? I didn't find them
initially in the APA directory since technically they're under the
school of ed. at OSU. However, the program descriptions seems
promising. For instance, the science program states

"The academic field of Sport and Exercise Science encompasses the
description, evaluation, and explanation of structural, functional,
and behavioral phenomena related to participation in various types
of physical activity and exercise"-In addition, you choose to
specialize either exercise physiology, or Health & Physical activity
behavior.

The final thing that got me excited was under program requirements,
it stated "Applicants interested in Health and Physical Activity
Behavior typically have a strong background in the behavioral
sciences."

Anyone have any other programs they would suggest for me to look
further into? Thanks! :)

Great work Bobby, we always plan on your session being
a staple of the sports/fitness-related offerings at
ABA, even if we haven't heard from you in a while.

Unfortunately Kent, that's the only option that I know
of at this time. I guess no one has been able to
justify the cost of starting a behavioral Ph.D. track
in sports psychology. So, while at Western, I got the
ABA doctorate and did exactly as you said.
Unfortunately, all the traditional sports psychology
courses I attended had no students/instructors in them
with whom I could converse regarding behavioral
interpretations of what they were studying. Ah well,
I guess that means there's just a big opportunity out
there for us.

Sorry I haven't been around. Pressures of a 16 month old and all.
Just wanted to say we had a fun time at the martial arts workout at
the ABA convention, and had a great turn out despite the early
hour.

My plan to have this be a more audience participation thing, with
people from different style demonstrating and leading us thru
exercises didn't quite work out. A sudden uncharacteristic burst of
shyness among the group. WE had a great tai chi demonstration/lead,
though.

Hope to see you all next year.

I just joined this group today, and just wanted to say hello to all
the existing members. I'm currently doing my MA in beh. analy at
Western Mich. under Dr. R. Wayne Fuqua. I also work for the
Association for Behavior Analysis as the Bookstore Coordinator-if
you were at the bookstore in the 2001 or 2002 conventions, selecting
and getting all those books there was my job.

I have recently discovered, thanks to a grad-level BA survey course,
my strong interest in sports psychology. Therefore, to say I'm just
getting my feet wet is an understatement...;) One questions I had
that I wanted some opinions on is that I am currently determining
where to do my doctorate, and was a little surprised that the APA
book of psych grad programs only has two listed for sports, neither
on the PhD level. Assuming this is correct, should I just get a
doctorate in a broad category like "social" or "applied" and pursue
sports research and take sports-related electives?
