not received it and wishes to have a copy may e-mail me directly at
mkirkpatrick@... requesting a copy. I'll send it out as an
attachment via individual e-mails.
The attachment depicts a Chase Bank account that was maintained for the
SIG. The last statement, dated April 30, 2009, shows a total balance of
$577.24. On top of the statement is a copy of a cashier's check in the
amount of $577.24 (the total balance), made out to Marianne Jackson.
The check was send to Marianne in this morning's outgoing mail,
completing the closure of the SIG account and transfer of the treasury.
I'm a transparency buff, so I wanted all members to have access to
copies of these data. E-mail me if you didn't get one and would like one.

Attached please find a scan of the final bank statement from the
account of the Health, Sport & Fitness special interest group of
ABAI. Overlaying the statement is a copy of the cashier's check for
the account total. This amount represents our total dues accumulation
since June 2002 (following our annual meeting in May at the ABAI
conference), minus the single $100 cash award for student research
given in Atlanta in May 2006. This bank account is now closed, and the
pictured check is enroute to Marianne Jackson in Fresno for
administration on behalf of the SIG.
Since I was elected to the chair in May 2002, our purpose in requesting
dues was to support a student research award. Although we have
observed several projects at ABAI each year that would have been
eligible for our award, only one student ever applied. Naturally, the
membership may decide on a different direction, but this was its
history.
We have historically discussed whether dues should be mandatory or
voluntary. Previously, we decided to keep them voluntary on the
grounds that some of us (gainfully employed, tenured or tenurable, for
example) are in a position to contribute generously while others
(especially students) may be discouraged from participating because of
financial challenges should dues be a pre-condition for involvement.
In the past, we have placed networking and socially-supporting HSF
endeavors above other objectives, so we've wanted to encourage the
broadest participation possible.
We once had a quarterly newsletter, written mainly by Ralph Pampino.
This was distributed electronically (for free) in lieu of paper copy
(which would have required printing and mailing fees as well as labor).
Ralph did a great job before his time and attention were required
elsewhere.
The fee schedule below allotted different privileges to different
levels of membership; enforcement was lax. However, we did allow the
lion's share of the decision making about the research award (the one
time it happened) to be made by the highest dues-paying members, in
keeping with the idea that those giving the most should have a greater
say in how it is spent. The structure was as follows:
_a_ Senior Sustaining Member $150.00/yr $270.00/2
yr $380.00/3 yr
_b_ Sustaining Member $75.00/yr $135.00/2 yr
$190.00/ 3 yr
_c_ Senior Supporting Member $50.00/yr $90.00/2 yr
$128.00/3 yr
_d_ Supporting Member $25.00/yr $45.00/2 yr
$64.00/3 yr
_e_ Student Member $10.00/yr $18.00/2
yr $25,00/3 yr
_f_ Affiliate no charge
_g_ Old scheme, $10/year or $20/2 years
Maintaining a separate account for the SIG as a business-type "general
fund" was a nuisance, as reporting requirements after September 11,
2001 mandated assignment of a tax identification number and designation
of a signatory officer whose status was determined in a process
independent of opening the account (I had to prepare a letter
authorizing myself to sign paperwork on behalf of the SIG, and
technically anyone who took over the treasurery should have such a
letter from the chair. Further, there should be a board overseeing the
transfer of the authority, etc.). Basically, it was much ado about
nothing.
Bob Stein allowed me to take over the treasury early on in my tenure as
chair, as I was gung-ho to raise the public profile of the SIG and
invest time and energy in ensuring accountability. I hoped that a
sound organizational structure with a well defined purpose (student
research awards) and a transparent process would encourage membership,
dues payments, and active involvement. It appears, however, that the
determining factors for participation lie elsewhere. I would not
recommend continuing this level of organization, though periodically
reporting publicly the contents of the treasury (even if it is subsumed
into a member's checking account and kept separate only on paper) is
probably still an important system check to keep us honest. It is
surprisingly easy to forget how much money has been contributed in
dues, especially when membership changes frequently and payment may be
made at any time.
Thank you all for your time and involvement over these past few years.
My term as "outgoing chair/treasurer" (unofficial, but good practice to
ensure continuity) comes to an end now that the annual SIG meeting at
ABAI is completed. Please support Marianne and her leadership team in
reinvigorating the HSF-SIG and keeping it alive.

Joe,
If SIG applications are not complete as of 8 am EDT tomorrow, we will
not be able to include them in the May Council agenda. They will have to
wait until Fall. Here is where we stand:
Military and Veteran's Issues SIG
1) Missing 5 signatures
Behavior Analysis with Robots SIG
1) Need 2 more signatures
Disruptive Disorders SIG:
1) 7 more signatures
Behavioral Pharmacology, toxicology, addictive behavior, and addtive behavior treatment SIG:
1) 4 more signatures
The books go in a day or two to the Council and I cannot send incomplete
applications.

Re:Include Psychology in Health Care Reform
While comprehensive legislation has not yet been introduced, committees in Congress have held several hearings to begin to lay the groundwork for consideration of health care reform. The House Ways and Means Committee, Senate Finance Committee, and Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP) Committee are expected to continue their work through April and May.As leaders in Washington begin to convert ideas on reform into solid legislative proposals, your Senators and Representative need to hear from you NOW that health care reform must include mental health in benefit packages at parity and fully integrate psychologists and psychological services into primary care and prevention initiatives.

Grassroots feedback is extremely important to our advocacy efforts, so we would very much appreciate it if you would e-mail (jcook@...) or fax (202-336-5797) us any responses you receive from your Senators or Representative.
Message:
I am writing as a psychologist and constituent to urge you to pass comprehensive health care reform legislation that includes mental health benefits at parity in all plans offered in a national insurance pool and ensures that mental health and psychologists’ services are central to primary care and prevention initiatives.
Congress should build on last year’s passage of the parity bill and make it clear that mental health and substance use benefits should be treated equally with physical benefits.Psychological studies show that the mind and body are strongly linked.Health care reform must make sure that mental health and substance use benefits are included and covered at parity in any national insurance pool.
Psychologists and our services should also be fully integrated in initiatives that strengthen the role of primary care in the health system. We already provide services in primary and integrated care settings today. We play a vital role in treating and preventing a range of health and mental health concerns in children, teens, and adults.Health care reform must ensure that psychologists are fully authorized to participate in the delivery of these services, and that prevention and wellness initiatives include screening for depression and other key mental health services.
Congress has a tremendous opportunity to pass comprehensive health care reform legislation that will provide coverage for the un- and under-insured, reduce costs and improve the quality of health care Americans receive. Please ensure that mental health and psychologists’ services are fully integrated in all aspects of this important reform effort. Thanks for your time and consideration.
Background:
As health care reform continues to take shape, APAPO has been advocating for Practice is several ways.We want to make sure that mental health benefits are included and covered at parity in the national insurance pool envisioned in the reform plan.As primary care is given prominence, we want to guarantee that psychologists are fully authorized to participate in the delivery of these services, and that the legislation integrates mental and behavioral services within primary care. Also, as preventive services are envisioned as a way to reduce costs, we must make sure that screening for depression and other key mental health services will be included.
On March 4, Psychology leaders from throughout the country took messages about health care reform to over 300 meetings on Capitol Hill during the APAPO State Leadership Conference. Our government relations team has prepared two fact sheets on the issue:
Purpose The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (NHLBI) of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), in collaboration with other partners, is planning to conduct an evaluation study of communities that will examine outcomes associated with community programs to reduce childhood obesity through policy, environmental, behavioral, and educational activities addressing energy balance. The goal is to examine effects of childhood obesity programs by using a natural experiment al design. Results will be disseminated to inform national and local policy for reducing the prevalence of childhood obesity. The NHLBI plans to issue a Broad Agency Announcement to establish this evaluation study, with one five-year contract for a Research Coordinating Center anticipated. Accordingly, the NHLBI is soliciting input from the scientific community, national organizations that address childhood obesity, and the public on scientific issues to address, as well as on information about relevant existing community programs. ============================================================= TO JOIN THE MAILING LIST: Send an e-mail message to: * listserv@... * The subject line should be blank * The message should read SUBscribe BSSR-Guide-L [your full name]. This list should take an active role in commenting on the below model act to ensure that it represents health issues and does not become soley DD focused.
ABAI is soliciting commentary on the latest working draft of the model language for licensing ABA practitioners. You can access it through your www.abainternationa l.org portal login.
This issue should be of some interest to the Clinical SIG for several reasons:
1. Attractive alternative to licensure in psychology? Many Clinical SIG members have (or will have) a license to practice psychology. A different licensing option may be a point of interest. The scope of practice for the license involves: "The practice of applied
behavior analysis is defined as the application of the principles, methods, and procedures derived from the experimental analysis of behavior and applied behavior analysis (including principles of operant and respondent learning) to assess and improve socially important human behaviors." Thus, the scope of the license aims to cover everything from depression & anxiety to Autism and DD so long as an underlying philosophy of BA guides your practice. Clinical Behavior Analysts dissatisfied with the APA dominated licensure machine may find this a favorable alternative. 2. Ghettoization of BA? A separate licensure system more fully separates BA from the rest of
psychology. This may have negative long-term consequences. 3. Creative Alternatives? Since many Clinical SIG members have already run into licensure issues during their training, we are in a unique position to present the Practice Board with problems and potential solutions that have not fully explored. For example, there are accreditation systems in place (ABPS, APCS, BACB) that might be utilized without attempting to get new BA legislation passed in all 50 states. 4. Translating basic science into practice? Since the BCBA certification began ABAI and affiliated chapter conventions have become stranger places. CE requirements push practitioners to a narrow selection of applied presentations (mostly autism). Fewer people in the applied arena attend presentations given by basic researchers who typically do not
have BCBAs (and thus cannot directly offer BCBA CE's). This can undermine the basic research/applied research/clinical practice feedback loops that have given our field its strength. Licensure (as distinct from BCBA accreditation) is likely to require CE's and Clinical SIG members' feedback on that process (while not part of the Licensing Act) is also important.

Also, this year at ABA:I we will be having a meeting on this topic. As most of you know our military and veteran issue SIG is in formation. If interested in supporting, send a letter to Majda Seuss <mseuss@...>,
The peer reviewed open access journal- Journal of Early and Intensive Behavior Intervention is now available at www.behavior-analyst-online.org In addition, please note the below announcement from the editor:
Announcement:
With the publication of our next issue, both the Name and Mission of the Journal of Early and Intensive Behavioral Intervention (JEIBI) will change. From this point froward, JEIBI will be known as The Journal of Behavior Assessment and Intervention for Children (JBAIC). This name change reflects the concurrent change in Mission to serve as an Open Submission Journal with a broader target population, including children of all ages diagnosed with developmental disabilities, medical issues, and mental health diagnoses, as well as those who are considered neuro-typically developing. The journal's philosophical
orientation remains grounded in the science of human behavior, specifically promoting empirically supported research focused on functional behavior assessment and treatment interventions, as well as innovative teaching methodologies which meet the standards of Evidence Based Practices. Additionally, JBAIC seeks to provide a forum for the discussion of critical contemporary issues within the public domain that serve to affect the provision of such services. As such, we welcome and encourage not only the submission of research on successful interventions, but also the submission of literature reviews, legislative/legal briefs, and position papers focused on the ethical issues affecting the delivery of such services. In addition, articles and research conducted on organizational behavior management related to the improvement of program design and development will also be accepted. Interested authours should submit their manuscripts to: Michael F. Dorsey, Ph.D, Editor JBAIC, at: mfdorsey@....
