Fellow Behavior Analysts,

There is a May, 2007 deadline health care providers to
obtain an NPI # by the Administrative Simplicfication providions of the
HIPPAA act. This can be done online (for free) at: https://nppes.
cms.hhs.gov/ NPPES/Welcome. do

Some analysts have gone to get their NPI and found the following
situation:

There are options to apply under the taxonomy of Behavioral
Health & Social Service Providers: psychologists (with behavioral or DD
specializations) or to apply uder the taxonomy: Other Service
Providers -
Specialist. As some of us are not licensed psychologists, the former
option
appears to be a misrepresentation, and the latter option is not very
specific. Some members of our field have contacted customer support
regarding this and asking that a taxonomy which would include Behavior
Analysts be added (perhaps having a space for the BCBA Certificant # as
well). Below is a letter sent to customer service. While we may not need
this NPI to provide services, it may help our field to have the
classification added (especially as more and more funding agencies are
picking us up as providers.). It may behoove us to all contact customer
service via e-mail, or call the help line to ask that a classification
be
made for Behavior Analysts. Thank you!

E-mail: customerservice@ npienumerator. com or call: 1-800-465-3203

Sample Letter:

Dear Customer Service,

I am a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (www.bacb.com) with a
certification
number, EIN for the agency, and provider contract agreements in good
standing over the last several years with Medicaid Waiver in Tennessee.

I have attempted to comply with medicaid rules requiring that my agency
obtain an NPI from you in order to continue to work with children and
adults
with developmental disabilities through Tennessee's Medicaid Waiver
System
and Tennessee Behavioral Health.

When I attempt to obtain the NPI for my group, I am unable to log in as
Board Certified Behavior Analyst is not an option in your system. The
closest thing you have to what I do is psychologist, specializing in
work
with people with developmental disabilities. This, however is not
appropriate as I am not, nor are the colleagues in my group, licensed
psychologists and we do not wish to represent ourselves as such.

Many state medicaid waiver systems now approve Board Certified Behavior
Analysts as providers of Applied Behavior Analysis services and many
people
have benefitted from those services. Please help us comply with the NPI
requirement so that the children and adults with special needs who
require
our services do not experience a lapse in service due to system problems
with obtaining an NPI. Thank you for your consideration. I look forward
to
hearing from you and learning how best to comply with this requirement.

Hello all,

The Behavior Analyst Online organization www.behavior-analyst-
online.org is in the process of starting a new journal- The Journal
of Behavior Analysis in Health, Sports, Fitness, and Medicine in
2008. This is just a reminder that at this point, the journal is open
for buisness. In addition, the editoral board has an open call for
papers.

The mision of Behavioral Analysis in Health, Sports, Fitness, and
Medicine (BAHSFM) is the application of behavioral principles for
promoting wellness, enhancing fitness, and sports skills development,
and ameliorating disease. The bi-directional interaction between
physiology and behavior can be effectively mediated through the
application of elementary principles of behavior. Behavior analysis
has thereby exerted its influence in the fields of health and
medicine, as well as in the enhancement of the safe and skillful
performance that in turn facilitates well-being. Examples include
but are not limited to the areas of exercise and dietary compliance,
smoking cessation, stress reduction, diabetes management, obesity
treatment, and the development of sport performance and safety skills
that bring about healthy reinforcement-rich lifestyles less
vulnerable to disease. This journal aims to foster a greater
understanding of the impact of behavior analysis on health, sports,
fitness, and behavioral medicine and seeks to publish conceptual and
research articles in these areas. In addition, we seek to publish
literature reviews and articles focused on behavior analytic
contributions to health policy and problem reduction.

SO if you believe that you have an article that is suitable for this
journal, send it our way. You can e-mail it to me directly at
jcautilli2003@...

Thanks,

Joe Cautilli, Ph.D.

P.S. Please stop by www.behavior-analyst-online.org and check out the
new site look.

Hello all,

Behavior Analysis Online (www.behavior-analyst-online.org )has now
entered into a new phase in its evolution and growth. We have moved
from a small but visible website to becoming a key special interest
group within the Association for Behavior Analysis International.

In addition to the above in 2008, we will be releasing two new
journals. They are The Journal of Behavior Analysis in Health,
Sports, Fitness, and Medicine and The Journal of Behavior Analysis
of Offender and Victim - Treatment and Prevention. We are currently
seeking articles to fill these new journals. The mission of the
journals are as stated below:

The Journal of Behavioral Analysis in Health, Sports, Fitness and
Medicine will be appearing in 2008. Behavioral Analysis in Health,
Sports, Fitness, and Medicine (BAHSFM) is a journal for those
interested in the application of behavioral principles for promoting
wellness, enhancing fitness, and sports skills development, and
ameliorating disease.

The Journal of Behavior Analysis of Offender and Victim - Treatment
and Prevention (JBA-OVTP) "The mission of this new journal will be
to highlight the role of behavior analysis in adult and juvenile
crime prevention, assessment of offenders including risk assessment,
and treatment programs from a behavioral orientation including but
not limited to the use of behavioral counseling, collaborative goal
setting, contingency management, functional assessment, functionally
based interventions, respondent conditioning and counter conditioning
procedures, functional analytic psychotherapy and acceptance and
commitment therapy. The journal will also place a major focus
articles on that present behavior analytic and social learning models
of the development of criminal behavior, the behavioral treatment of
victims, victimology from a behavior analytic perspective, behavioral
interventions for violent crime, functional assessment of offender
motivation, and other types of criminal activity, including
behavioral approaches to the reduction of terrorism and insurgency
reduction. We see all of these topics as suitable for publication in

Hello all,
The latest issue of the Behavior Analyst Today, volume 7.4 is now available online www.behavior-analyst-online.org at no cost. For those interested in neurofeedback with adult offenders, this issue contains an excellent article on the history of the procedure and its use with adults. Also, it contains a really good article with conducting meta analysis with single subject designs and a good article on behavioral activation and the treatment of depression with implications for public policy. So stop by and check it out.
Joe Cautilli, Ph.D.

Hello all,

I just started a group for policy analysis and behavior analysis. If
you are interested:

The group is for behavior analysts in all areas of research, education,
and clinical work who are grappling with the policy implications of
their work. The group discusses public policy, conducting policy
analysis, and relating cost and benefit information to policy makers
and consumers.

Behavior and Social Issues is an independent journal. It just published
an interesting article on the rise of Biological Psychiatry. I think
that people who believe that a conspiricacy exists so that
psychologists make less , might be interested. Anyhow it is the first
two aricles one by Wyaat & Midkiff and the other by Wong:

journal=bsi&page=index

I thought that they were interesting and tell a part of the story that
most don't speak about.

Volume 3 issue 3 of the Journal of Early and Intensive Behavioral Intervention is now available at www.behavior-analyst-online.org .This issue has a wonderful article on rule governed behavior and ADHD. This article and the follow up comments is of particular interest for families of children with autism, because the impulsivity that results from the lack of rule governed behavior would be common to both populations. In addition, this issue contains a great article on encopresis. Finally, we have an excellent article on ten ways to improve reading. Anyhow, the issue as always is at no cost to reader.

I believe this would be a wonderful study. Behaviroal weight programs lead
to a 20% weight reduction but the maintence is a problem:

Drew A. Anderson, Angela M. Simmons and Suzanne M. Milnes (2005):
Interventions For Weight Reduction: Facing the Maintenance Problem - IJBCT,
1.(4), Page 276 www.behavior-analyst-online.org

Anderson, D. A., Shapiro, J. R., & Lundgren J. D. (2001) The Behavioral
Treatment of Obesity. The Behavior Analyst Today, 2 (2), 133
www.behavior-analyst-online.org

So a behavioral development model is really needed. As for IV, I think that
you could set up a coding system like wieght watchers and score it over the
course of the day. Although this would take alot of time.

Hello all,

As most of you know, we are trying to get the BAO site to become a Special
Interest Group of ABA. We are prepared to go infront of the ABA Council but
it seems that we are a few e-mails short...If you are an ABA member, please
take a moment to write ABA a short e-mail supporting our joining to "Majda
Seuss" <mseuss@...>. Just something to the effect:

"I believe that the Behavior Analyst Online organization would be an
excellent special interest group at ABA:I"

Thanks,

Joe
