HSF SIG members:
Below please find the content of my annual report to ABA submitted
Friday, April 15th. I had intended to prepared a differently formatted
report for our membership, but realized that in the interest of helping
prepare others to lead the SIG it would be better to provide the exact
questions asked by ABA on their web-based reporting form. I have typed
in my responses for this past year.
The treasury status is as follows: We have a balance of $628.73 as of
our last statement from Wilmington Trust. The quarterly report was
issued on 3/31/03 and represents our dues total with interest. There
have been no withdrawals. At present, the only member-approved plan to
remove funds is for payment of our research award (announced last year).
I have tacked the treasury summary on to the end of the annual report.
Please be aware that ABA does not require a treasury report.

Special Interest Group Annual Report - 2005
SIG name: Health, Sport & Fitness
A. What did the SIG accomplish in 2004-2005?
1. Established a preliminary web page.
2. Instituted a student research award.
3. Reorganized dues structure (see below in response to dues
question)
4. Published our newsletter.
B. What are its plans for 2005-2006?
1. Further promote our student research award.
2. Develop internal marketing strategy to support the SIG
and SIG-sponsored activities.
C. Please list the top three issues of importance to the SIG.
1. Promoting student research in behavior analysis
addressing issues in health, sport and fitness.
2. Developing interdisciplinary contacts to promote
research and application in health, sport and fitness.
3. Integrating HSF issues with other SIGs; for example,
health and fitness for persons with autism (HSF/AUT).
Membership: In recent discussions of the ABA Council, the importance
for SIGs, ABA, and the field that more members join in SIG activities
has been emphasized. SIG activity and membership are important to the
health and vitality of ABA's membership and the field as a whole. The
ABA Council would like to explore how ABA SIGs are trying to increase
their membership and how ABA can help with these efforts.
D. What strategies does your SIG use to increase its membership?
Apparently ineffective ones. We have relied on word-of-mouth
and e-mail distributions.
E. Is there any way that ABA could help increase SIG membership?
We wonder if SIG-sponsored activities could be flagged with a
logo or abbreviation in the convention program book for easy
recognition, much as program areas are designated (but in addition to
that PA designation).
F. How many members did the SIG have in 2004?
n = 49 (actual) included on the e-mail roster.
G. How many of your members are not ABA members?
< 5 (estimated)

ABA Services: Currently, ABA supports SIGs by providing mailing lists,
on request, of ABA members; e-mailing members on behalf of the SIG;
publishing articles and announcements in the ABA Newsletter; waiving the
Expo poster fee at the annual convention; linking SIG Web sites to the
ABA site; and acting as a clearing house and archival facility for SIG
documents.
I. Are these services of assistance in helping you run your SIG?
Yes.
J. Do you have other suggestions for service that ABA could
initiate to help your SIG?
Some means of identifying SIG sponsored activities in the
convention program would help.

Special Interest Group Annual Treasury Report - 2005
NOTE: The treasury report is NOT required of ABA and was not submitted
to them. This is for our members only.
Membership dues:
Five members have paid dues through May 2006. One of those was
at the senior sustaining level for three years (ending in May 2007).
One was at the senior supporting level for three years (also ending in
May 2007). Three were based on the old dues structure (grandfathered
in) at $20/2 years (all three ending May 2006).
SIG funds are held in a savings account at Wilmington Trust bank
in Dover, Delaware. The account is held in the name of "The health,
sport, and fitness SIG for the Assn. for Behavior Analysis" c/o Michael
A. Kirkpatrick. We have our own tax registration number as a non-profit
organization with the IRS, although I believe it would be permissible
for us to use ABA's should somebody want to change this in the future.
The account can be transferred via a simple but formal letter by the
current financial officer, so changes in leadership can be effected
easily. A paper trail will ensure that all funds are accounted for.
There have been no withdrawals to date. Our account balance was $628.73
as of our last quarterly statement on 3/31/03.
Of the 57 names still on our membership role, 52 have not paid
current dues. Our intended strategy has been to keep dues voluntary.
Since we can distribute newsletters and mail electronically, it is not
essential to have an operating budget to support communication among
members. The research award will require funding if we have any takers.
If and when we begin to spend money on student research, I would propose
discussing the issue of dues again. Until then, we appreciate those who
have been willing to make contributions to support our ambition of
actively rewarding student work in this area. Those who have not
contributed financially should feel free to contribute in other ways.
Share ideas and information, raise questions, and suggest initiatives
that may advance our interests. Making use of our network and sharing
it with others is helpful.
