Listmates,

Do you know of any liquid or powder supplements that can be hidden in water, OJ,
milk or food? Especially zinc, B6, magnesium, biotin, calcium d-glucarate, and
probiotics? I am desperate.

My adult daughter has schizophrenia probably caused by mercury poisioning. If
she takes supplements (zinc & B6 critical due to urine pyrroles), avoids sweets
and gets enough sleep she functions pretty well. For the past year, has been
having psychotic episodes during periods due to extremely heavy periods. After
taking calcium d-glucarate for past two months, had normal period & no
psychosis. She was feeling so well that I went out of town on business for two
days. Thought my husband would follow my instructions (make sure she takes her
supplements, avoids sweets, eats regularly, doesn't overexercize & gets enough
sleep); but he didn't. She had waffles for breakfast, quit taking her
supplements and went on two hour hike w/o eating lunch. I left Thursday at 11
am & arrived at the airport on Friday at 7:30pm, but by then she was psychotic.
Doesn't think clearly and is refusing supplements and natural progesterone
cream. If I can get her back on supplements quickly, she should respond. We
had hoped to start chelating soon.

Thanks,
Janet McAuley

I don't know if this will help, but I grind up all supplements for
my son, as he won't voluntarily swallow ANYTHING. I then dissolve
them in a little warmed water and either put them in just enough
juice to cover the taste, or, even more effective for him, I put
them is his peach soy yogurt drink which I purchase at either my
health food store or local market. I don't know whether your
daughter can tolerate yogurt or soy yogurt, but it's pretty easy to
hide supplements in there.
good luck

I find I can hide quite a lot of disgusting stuff in chocolate
dessert. I know your daughter isn't supposed to have sweet things
but perhaps until you can get some improvement it might be worth
trying. Chocolate is an excellent disguiser of bitter tastes. If you
find a suitable vehicle to hide the supplements in, keep tasting as
you add them in slowly. B6 and zinc are notorious for tasting
bitter, so watch out particularly for these. Otherwise try jam
(jelly) - I know it's sugar-laden again. B6 is available in
injectable form, but I suppose to do that you have to find a
doctor/nurse to give it and there's the problem (I assume) of
daughter's consent.

There is a liquid vitamin called Daily Complete that I buy online and
use for myself. It has all vitamins and amino acids in it, so it may
be more than what you are looking for. It tastes sweet. Could be
mixed in a juice. DEFINITELY take it with food. If you take it by
itself on an empty stomach, you will be nauseous within a few
minutes.

We use Solgar brand chelated magnesium (magnesium glycinate) and
chelated zinc (zinc glycinate) with our son. These both have bland
tastes. I use a mortar and pestle to grind the tablets to a fine
powder and mix with other minerals, water, and xanthan gum to make a
mineral liquid suspension. Our son does not mind this being mixed in
with his almond/rice milk. You might be able to slip some powdered
tablets into some kind of food or drink.

B6 and some other B vitamins taste horrible. We use 100% unsweetened
cranberry juice to mask the taste of the B vitamins we give our son.
We make our own vitamin liquid by opening capsules into the cranberry
juice, adding some Xanthan gum to suspend what doesn't dissolve, and
then adding Splenda to sweeten it up a bit (you could use stevia if
you want to avoid Splenda). I'm not sure this will help much in your
situation. One crazy idea that I have not tried would be to make
some B-vitamin jello with unsweetened cranberry juice, gelatin,
sweetener of choice, Xanthan gum (to keep suspension until the
gelatin takes over) and B-vitamins. This might actually taste good
if the concentration of B-vitamins is not too high.

The powdered probiotics we have used (Culturelle, Kirkman's
acidophilus plus powder) don't have too bad of a taste and could
probably be mixed with milk or something like applesauce.

We were able to get meds into a teen with ASD by hiding them in nut butter on gf
rice crackers. With the combination of the thick stickiness of the nut butter
and the crunchiness of the crackers he couldn't tell they were in there. Good
luck. You know not to chelate if she has mercury amalgam dental fillings,
right?
