Cindy you really made me laugh because you sound just like me. I basically
pull out the vita cocktail i call, keith goes running, I chase after
him...screaming come here, and pin his head back, pry his mouth open and pour
it in, and after about a month of doing this and saying if you just swallow
it , it wont taste nasty, The past two days I noticed if i give him a drink
with the pills he is now immediately swallowing it....
Pill, syringe or spoon w/meds comes out...Son dashes around the house
screaming noooooooo ( big house..tile floors......loud noise ).
Child runs into a room and is cornered . Medicine goes into his
mouth....medicine comes out a minute later in huge projectile vomit.
Hose down child and floors .

Diana from Kansas here:
My son was a projectile vomit machine when he drank milk (many years ago-9)
but ANYHOOOO there were a couple of meds which he just could not stand and
would vomit them up. I took to giving him a few drops of it in a syringe,
waiting for the inevitable vomit, giving him a couple more drops until gag
reflex was dry. Then I'd give him the rest of the dose and a very small
drink of water. Since it's not safe to give the whole dose again (even if
you're pretty sure it's all over the floor, he may have absorbed some), I
felt like this was the safest way to go. I did load the syringe a LITTLE
heavy for ex., if he was supposed to have 10 cc's, I put in 11 and counted
that extra cc as my contribution to the toilet.
Bye-bye............from Di ;+)

Cindy,
This post had me cracking up, as this is what we did all weekend, thanks to
Lorilyn's post on this list. For all of you out there who want your child to
swallow a pill, this works without a doubt! We tried it on the spoon, holding
the nose, etc. nothing worked. This however, worked. We coated it up with
coconut butter, put it way back on his tongue, (that's the hard part) and
down it went, I could not believe it. Thanks so much for everyone's ideas, you
are such a clever, resourceful bunch! Val
This technique of coating the pill in oil and placing it way back on
the tongue also works for my four-year-old son. Are any of you
concerned that your child could choke on the pill by giving it this
way, or are you all confident that the capsule will always go down
okay? I'd appreciate your thoughts--I get a little anxious(as does
he) every time I give him one.

To train a child to take capsules, get instruction from a vet for giving
pills to a cat or dog. Same technique, same training method and very
effective. Parents should not give up too easily since that is letting
their children make the important decisions.

You mentioned using the pill-giving method that vets use. Well, my
child is only 6 years old but he is 82 pounds and 4'6". I am only
5'5" and definitely noticed that I have an easier time giving a pill
to my 8 pound cat, LOL !! Wonder if keeping my son's "paws" down by
rolling him into a huge fluffy towel first would help, hee hee.
Now it make sense! I could never figure out why my daughter Jen ( 11 1/2
years old) take 32 pill and capsules every morning without any problems and
everyone is having problems. I have been raising Collie Dogs every since I
was a kid. Dum me!!! That is how I taugh Jen to take capsules. I though
everyone taught their kids that way! Well, I can tell for a fact it works.
Usually I rub the neck of the dog or child when I am first training just
under the chin ... up and down movement. I have no idea if this is
important, but it seems to make it easier for them, that it take their mind
off the capsules.

Beverly,
Could you expand on your pill swallowing training technique?
Thanks much,
Chris

I always have a drink ready anyway, as I don't think pills should sit in a
stomach without fluid. Just give it sooner if he looks a little bug-eyed!

we've been doing it fine. A few times I think if went back a bit too far and
he gagged it back up, but if you get it right on the back of his tongue and
close his mouth, have a drink, it goes down right away, even before he
swallows the drink, it is a natural body reflex. We haven't had any problems
with it so far, other than of course having to do it like we're Hulk Hogan
tag team wrestling him, it's going OK :) Val
