Hi All;
I've been reading the discussion on mixing DMSA (I'm behind in reading
posts).
I thought some folks might be interested to hear our method.
I mix some apple butter with water to make a thick slurry that isn'
too thick to go up the medicine dropper (the larger kind, it is marked
in ml). I have also used jam or jelly but the nice thing about the
apple butter I get is that I do not have to then strain it to remove
lumps cuz it mixes well.
I dump my required DMSA dose into a small glass jar (i.e. the amount
for four doses or whatever). I mix the DMSA with 5 ml of water because
this mixes better than if you go straight for the apple butter mix. I
then add some Vit C pwder for acidity (I remember Andy said DMSA needs
an acid medium to stay active and we shouldn't mix more than a few
doses at a time). Then I add the required amount of apple butter
slurry so that I know exactly how many mg of DMSA are in how many ml
of solution. I adjust things so I get a solution thick enough to
create a sort of suspension without it being too thick to where it
sticks too well to the inside of the medicine dropper. I still shake
it before administering it. I also keep it cold. You wind up wasting
some because with it being kind of thick you have to mix an extra dose
or two due to the cling factor. We do only two nighttime doses this
way.
Hope this helps some! Sounds a little odd, but seems to work fine for
us.
