The Autism Recovery Network of Florida and Repligen Corporation have organized a conference entitled "New Biological Directions in Autism" to be held October 14-15, 2000 in Orlando, Florida. The focus of the conference is to provide both parents and professionals a clear understanding of the most current and scientifically valid information concerning the complex biology of autism. A panel of leading research scientists and clinicians have been assembled to discuss the dysfunction of the gastrointestinal, immune, metabolic and neuroendocrine systems in autistic spectrum disorders (ASD). Scientific talks will cover a wide range of topics including the gut-brain connection, immunopathology of the intestine in autism, neuroimmune connections in disease, metabolic disorders in ASD and secretin and gastrointestinal biology. In addition to the presentations, there will be an "Ask the Doctor" session in which several physicians will share their experiences in treating children with ASD. This session will be driven primarily by questions from the audience on topics including gastrointestinal dysfunction, mercury toxicity, ear and respiratory infections, nutritional supplements, sleep irregularities, food intolerances and problematic behaviors. With a growing number of children being diagnosed with ASD, a resounding theme throughout this conference will be the need for timely diagnosis and treatment of the co-morbidities associated with autism and the urgent need to further characterize the complex biology of this patient population.
