Hi!  I am Tammy and just signed up with this group.  I have been on Atkins since August (with the exception of 2 months because I went to Weight Watchers; but am back now!).  I have lost 42 pounds to date and a bunch of inches.  I look forward to meeting all of you and sharing valuable information.

hello Everyone,
My name is Carol and I'm new to the group, I'm hoping to pick up
some great tips on staying on the Atkin diet and how not to cheat. My
problem is that I work night shift and I'm up most of the day.

When I go to work at night (12:00 midnight) I'm looking for a
something to give me some energy, candy, cookies, popcorn what every,
HELP. I neglected to say that on certain days when I get off from
working night shift, I go and watch my grand daughters for about 6
hours - so I'm up for most of the day.

I can not get a good eating pattern, please somebody shoot me or help
me.

Thank you for listening to me complain.

Rember I'm just starting out. be kind.

Carol: The best tip I can give you is to be prepared for those
hungry times. Bring snacks with you, like devilled eggs, pepperoni,
sliced cheese, ham & cream cheese roll-ups, salad, whatever you
like. I find that if I keep pumpkin seeds and low-carb bars in my
purse and car, that helps me a lot since these things need no
refrigeration.

Remember that carbs (candy, popcorn, etc) only give you a very
temporary surge of energy, followed by an energy crash. Stick with
the protein choices and the energy will stay with you much longer.
You will find that on Atkins, you will no longer feel sluggish during
certain times of the day, because you will not have those insulin
spikes and dips.

The key thing to remember when starting Atkins is to be prepared for
your hunger. Plan ahead, pack your lunch and snacks the night
before.

This is a nice group of people. We all play nice here, don't worry :-

My suggestion is get yourself an ice chest with some blue ice so that food
stuff stays cool without getting wet.

Then I hope you have a microwave at work. That would make it
convenient. I'm assuming that you do. :)

Pack the cooler with:

Deviled Eggs

Boiled chicken packed in a Mason Jar.
This can be eaten as a soup or as just the chicken.

A can of tuna
Several boiled eggs
Mayo: Put Mayo in a a little Mason jar or old pimento cheese jar
Find a salt and pepper shaker with a tight closed lid.

With the above, you can make tuna fish salad or egg salad.

Add no carb cheese cut into little squares. These can be eaten by
themselves or added to the tuna salad or egg salad.

You can always place the salads on a lettuce leaf or a bed of shredded
lettuce.

Baked chicken

Cheese strips rolled up with a slice of ham. NOTE: Be sure the ham
doesn't have carbs. Use a toothpick to hold it together. Make it really
special by adding a green olive with pimento. Buy the olives that
indicated <1 carb/per 3 olives.

These are a few samples.

The sugar snacks will give you a high but you'll also crash or need to eat
more. This is a vicious pattern.

Try taking a Guarana tablet. It will give you energy and not add sugar.
For those who are having a fit that I suggested Guarana, I know that it may
stall the diet but the few times I used it it didn't. Some of the Guarana
has caffeine but others don't. Also, I hope that someone on the list can
give better suggestions on what can help to keep Carol awake for her job
and life because sugar is the one thing that she shouldn't be using.

Besides Carol, once on this diet, you will natural have more energy because
sugar can make your system sluggish.

If you like pepperoni, you will love this tip: Place pepperoni in a
single layer on a couple of paper towels, microwave on high for about
30 seconds or until pepperoni becomes crisp. Use in place of potato
chips. Delicious!

Another great snack is pork rinds and sour cream, just be sure to
dish out the sour cream into another bowl, it is easy to go overboard
and eat too much if you are eating straight from the container.

Hi Deepak, and welcome to our group!

Where is Cardiff? And how much is a stone?

Alcohol is a big no-no for Atkins diet in the dieting stages. I think you can
add it back in slowly once you reach your weight, but only if it doesn't make
you gain weight back.

Haven't heard anyone say anything about stopping smoking except for your healths
sake. Not good for your lungs. But if you have trouble losing, you might want
to cut down and see if that will help. Hard to do, I know. I use to smoke 4
packs a day, but haven't had one since 1984. Wasn't easy, but it can be done.

Hello,

My name is Deepak and am from Cardiff. I am just about
to try Atkins and thought I can use a whole lot of
support.

I have to use a couple of stones to reach my ideal
weight. 2 and a half stones to be exact. One of my
friends on this diet told me that that I will be able
to lose that on a month with Atkins Induction. Is that
true?

I have bought the book but have yet to read it.

Another thing that I would like to know is if I can
drink alcohol on this diet? Is smoking any probs as
well?

Cheers for any help,

Deepak

Hello Group,

My Name is Sarah, I am new to the DADR. I bought the Book "The
Atkins Essentials: Book on Monday. I have tried all kinds of diets
(some I didnt want to try, Very long story) and failed. This one
seems to be a little bit different. My WOL is different as well. I
am a cashier at a Home Improvement Warehose, I do usually lift,
bend, walk alot, talk alot, move my hands and arms alot. When I am
at home I tend to sit down, sometimes I am not inspired to do much.
And then there are other days when I just want to keep going. I am
very much into art and music. I moved up here to North Idaho in May
2003. I dont have many friends here. Most of the time when I do get
asked to partys its all about the drinking. And I am not into that,
so I am left in out feild.

My Doctor said that for health reasons I should be around about 170
pounds. Which for me that translated into Greek!!!

But there is a personal Note I must say:
On Sunday Jan 4th 2004, I was at work and slipped and fell on my
Rear and went to the Docs for the indurstail injury. I am on very
light dutie. I can only stand/walk for 1/3 of my 8 hours. So
needless to say I will be sitting for about two weeks. :(
So right now I cant workout. Can someone help me with some ideas on
how to stay a little active?

About My Body.
Location: North Idaho, USA
Age: 21
Birthday: December 17th, 1982
My current Wt. is: 282 pounds
My Ht. 5 Foot 5 Inchs
My Goal Wt. : 170

Thank you All for reading this.
Hope to hear and get to know you all.

Sweetly,
Sarah Michelle

Are you able to bicycle or swim? I know it's too cold for swimming at this
time of the year for your area but you might try it at the "Y".

Hi!
My name is Tess and I am a new member to this group. Last time I was on the
Atkins diet (3 years ago) I lost 60 pounds. Unfortunately I went off the diet
and gained back 30 lbs. Now that I restarted two weeks ago, I have a total of 70
pounds to loose to get to my goal weight. I understand now that it must be a way
of life and not just a diet.

Thanks!
Tess

I eat virtually every meal in restaurants, so I am sympathetic. Here is
what I eat and where I eat it:
Taco Bell: Taco Salad with no beans and extra meat and I don't eat the
shell.
McDonalds: The dollar double cheeseburger (2) and I toss the bun. They will
also make an egg McMuffin without the English Muffin, I eat those for
breakfast, ditto for the Sausage McMuffin, I eat 2 of them
Wendy's: The Bacon Cheeseburger or the double stack from the dollar menu is
always good. I buy two, take off the bun and stack them.
KFC--I pull off the skin with the breading and eat the chicken
Checkers/Rallys: same as Wendy's
Breakfast: any kind of omelette or eggs, steak and eggs. They will always
substitute tomato slices for the grits/potatoes and toast.
Lunch: Chicken, tuna, ham or egg salad on a bed of greens or plain is always
good. A Philly cheesesteak eaten out of the bun is good, a chef salad with
ranch, bleu cheese, Italian or any low carb dressing is good, cottage cheese
and a burger patty is also one of my favorites. I also like an Italian sub, I
tear away the bread as I go. Lettuce wraps are also good, I love meat and
cheese wrapped in lettuce. Hardee's has a low carb "thickburger" that they
serve in between two lettuce leaves that is very tasty. I also like devilled
eggs, and you can add chopped ham or bacon to the egg stuffing, I have also
used olives.
Dinner: I am partial to steaks and salads. Steamed low carb broccoli,
cauliflower, green beans, creamed or sauteed spinach make nice sides. Bleu
cheese
makes a wonderful topping for meats and veggies. A hunk of fish with a nice
hollandaise is good, lamb chops with a rosemary au jus are also good
choices! The key is to look at the menu and ask your server what is available
for
people who don't eat carbs, almost all restaurants have low carb choices these
days.

For those in the southwest part of the country like California and Arizona,
Carl's Jr is available. It is the same company as Hardee's but, in my very
humble opinion, better. I recently moved to Michigan. Hardee's is here
but I doubt I'll eat there except on a rare occasion because it is a 20
mile trip one way to get there. Too bad because the Angus burgers are
good. If you have a Fatburger in the area, they serve a great burger and
you can get a fried egg on top. Great stuff.

Teri is nicer to the counter people than I am. I always ask for my food
low carb. I'll take a 6 dollar burger, no bun, no onions, no special sauce
at Carl's Jr. BTW, Burger King also has an Angus burger and you can get it
low carb. ie, no bun, on a plate.

If you have a chance, Red Robin has a great Pork Carnitas Meal. Just don't
eat the tortillas and you're set.
I also like Boston Market, hold the corn bread, mixed veges and
Spinach. Just dig out the carrots in the mixed veges.

So many restaurants. So many Low carb meals. I had Chinese tonight. I
requested and they made the sauce without sugar. No bad.

Cherri

When I go to a Mexican restaurant I always order the fajitas and slather
them with the sour cream and guacamole, I don't eat the tortillas. In a
Chinese
restaurant I ask for no sugar in the sauce and I order twice cooked pork
which is spicy pork with cabbage, garlic pork with string beans, mu shu pork
chicken beef or shrimp are also good choices. I get the less juicy items since
I don't eat the rice, I also like the ribs for appetizers and I "peel; the
egg rolls and eat the insides. The Hot and Sour soup is also a reasonably good
choice, I also tell them no baby corn or carrots.

You know there's no rule that says breakfast has to be eggs. You can have
whatever protein/low carb food mix that you want..Breakfast is the first meal
of the day, not bacon and eggs. Personally I never eat breakfast because I
am simply not hungry till about 2pm and then I eat my main meal of the day.
Dinner for me is a salad with meat, cheese and some nuts which would also be
good fro breakfast, when I loved in Japan, the eat salad for breakfast.
Here's my salad recipe:
Big handful of mixed greens--I buy several bags of greens and mix them
2 TBS sunflower seeds
2 TBS toasted walnuts
3 TBS Bacon bits (I make my own)
1 chopped hard boiled egg
3 TBS crumbled bleu cheese
4 ounces of chopped leftover cold meat--ham, turkey, tuna, whatever
1 TBS Craisins (They have carbs but not many and they add so much)
1 TBS potato sticks (ditto)
Bleu cheese or ranch dressing
Toss it up and munch away....

O say, can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming?
Whose broad stripes and bright stars, through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there.
O say does that star spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free, and the home of the brave?

Hello Everyone,

My name is Eunice and I am new to the list and relatively new to the Atkins
eating plan. I have been on Atkins for 6 weeks!! I am in desperate need of new
recipes!! Has anyone tried something interesting for eggs?

I am looking for some type of breakfast casserole which does not call for bread
or bread crumbs.

Hi everyone, I just joined several lists and wanted to introduce myself!

I am Mandy Landon and I am 27. I have gained a lot of weight due to
some family problems, and of course, just plain over eating! I want to
loose 100 to 120 pounds and keep it off! So, I have joined some lists
to help me through encouragement, ideas, and motivation. I am married
and we have two daughters and one boy. The girls are 3 and 5 and my
son is 1 and half. I want to set a good example for them. None of my
children have any weight problems and I want to insure we keep it that
way. I did not gain much weight with the first two, but, wow, my son
put almost 60 pounds on me. At least I am blaming it on him. Hehe

Anyway, thanks for letting me join the list. I most likely will just
lurk and learn, except for joining in on any "list activities". I am
really serious about these 100 pounds! I am not in a hurry though. All
I want to lose is about 1 to 2 pounds a week, so I have given myself a
year to lose those 10 bowling balls. I just received my copy of the
"Steak and Sex Diet" book on CD. Just for fun I ordered it several
weeks ago, and gave it to my husband, who needs to lose about 60
pounds. He got a kick out of it when he opened it on Christmas Eve
after the kids were in bed. He promises to follow it, even the romance
part. I ordered the tame version, but, of course, he wants be to get
the not so tame version. We will see how it goes first! Has anyone
followed it?

Oh, I live in Iowa, and so it is a little hard to do any exercising
out doors for a while, or at least for me. I do not like to go out in
to the cold! Well my husband and I going to start on losing this
weight first thing in the morning, so tonight we are cleaning out the
refrigerator and cupboards. I am going to donate a lot of the stuff to
a senior center.

We are going to watch carbs and fats, and start exercising everyday.
My husband says that he is going to follow the steak and sex diet for
sure. Hehe I am not sure about it yet, but I will begin to look at the
day to day suggestions and recipes. I have read the first chapter and
it was not quite like the name suggests. Not as much emphasis on the
sex as I was afraid of! Of course, with the kids we could use some
help in that area, too. My husband told me Christmas that if we make
the effort to change our eating habits, he will get us an elliptical
machine. Has anyone used them and how do they help? Do you have to
purchase an expensive one? I looked at some at Sears day before
yesterday, and they looked like they were made well, and we have a
Sears card. Has anyone on the list used a Sear's machine?

I know, I know, eating right and exercise, is the key, right? We are
not really going to follow any "regular" diet plan, unless we find one
we like by joining these lists. We have agreed not try any fad diet,
but instead just quit eating as much, and change when we eat and of
course, start moving more.

Thanks again for letting me join, and I will be learning through your
posts and suggestion for sure.

Mandy

You will lose quicker than that at first, so take advantage of it. Start
with gentle exercise on a daily basis--one lap around the block, then two, then
three....etc. until you get up to about 2-3 miles a day. Then start timing
yourself and start cutting the time it takes you to do it. When I first
started on the elliptical machine, I couldn't do 10 minutes and it took me 22+
minutes to do a mile. I now do a mile in 9 minutes, 1.5 miles in 14 mins, 2
miles in 21 minutes and 3 miles in 35 minutes without stopping. You will work
up to it but don't go crazy all at once and kill yourself or hurt yourself.
Stick with the program--I'm a sugar slut all the way, so I have to have a
sweet before bed or I can't stick with it. I eat virtually no carbs during
the day and then at night I have a dish of the Breyer's Carb Smart ice cream
before bed and it keeps me on the plan because I look forward to it all day! I
do creative things with it and mixed with diet soda for floats or shakes,
it's yummy! I add nuts to the chocolate, crushed sugar-free Oreos (2) for
cookies-n-cream or other creative twists. I also have recipes for sugar-free
and
low carb cheesecake--also keep in mind that sugar free DOES NOT mean low
carb!!!! It can be sugar-free but not low carb, but it can't be low-carb with
sugar in it!

Hey.....where are we going? And why are we in a handbasket......? Is it
getting warm in here or is it just me............?

I've had 4 back surgeries and an elliptical is all I can use--try it before
you buy it and get the one with the smoothest action and no impact--this is
so important. I actually LOVE using an elliptical and I am a lazy
exercise-hating piece of crap!! I also have an Atkins group called
atkinslowcarblosers
at yahoogroups that has all low carb recipes in the archives which are
searchable.

Hi Mandy, I love your attitude toward going healthy! It sounds like you have
made and researched how to lose your weight in a healthy way. I saw this recipe
on line, it sounded so weird that I decide to try it. To my surprise it was
really good. Give it a try: Pancakes serving for one....1/2 c of instant
oatmeal, 1/4 cup of cottage cheese, 2 eggs, a dash of vanilla, cinnamon and
nutmeg. Put in blender till mixed well and cook. Yes it sounds weird but I
promise it was good. Good Eating from Texas!V.
