Happy Halloween! Actually, I dont really like Halloween, but it was something to say
lol
too much candy in the stores this time of yr...and its soooooo hard to leave it behind. I try to be good, but theres been a few times lately that Reece's peanut butter cups have jumped into my basket...I really have no idea how they get there...
haha
But Im doing ok.. Ive found that balance that Ive been looking for since my journey began. I can allow myself those indulgences sometimes...and it keeps me sane and feeling normal.
Im losing 2 lbs a week lately.. Im up to 87 lbs lost now. I really wanted to make my 100 lb goal by Thanksgiving, but I doubt I will make it now...but I will be close. Im just glad that Im steadily losing and eating what I want to a certain degree... I still count my carbs and calories, but I dont obsess over it.
Ive got alot of stress in my life lately. Ive picked up a cpl of old habits - not food related.. and I need to quit those again.. Things are just tough right now.

Hi everyone, I just thought I would jump in. Sorry, but glad to hear that I am not alone with the eating thing. It just seems that I am making all kind of wrong choices. Not sure if it is a true stall or just bad habits creeping in, but I have lost and gained the same three pounds for two weeks now. Sure would like to hit 100lbs lost before Thanksgiving. I'll root for you Lisa!!!

I have wondered the same thing...not much posting for this group.
I had a bad week too...didn't lose anything...in fact gained a couple...and I can't figure it out.....my eating is relatively the same. I haven't had a stall to date...so maybe I'm just due?
I had my surg July 9..and have consistantly lost something each week till this week. Very frustrating!

My surgery was on July 11 and this week was also my first time not losing. Its funny, how I reacted, it was like OMG, that's it, that's all I'm going to lose, another failed attempt..... . I have to tell my brain to shut the F up, and just keep doing what I'm doing. We are not the only ones in the world who have stalled. But i do hate it!

I think the reason that I havent had a stall, to date...is that I change up my diet/meals all the time. I never eat the same amount of calories or carbs..from day to day. I dont track anything but I read every label b4 I either buy it or eat it. I keep a tally in my head of my carbs and try to stay fairly low...but that doesnt always work. If I want that piece of cake, i eat it..but I have to stop that. I dont want to fail again either. This surgery was too expensive to do that, since I paid for mine myself. We just have to keep on trying.

Hi. Im here. I guess I should post more. Goodness knows, I need some support...something to help me get me past all of these bad choices Im making lately.
I know what you mean about eating healthy. I have been fat all my life, or at least it feels that way. This morning I weighed 269.2 down from 346. I haven't weighed under 300 in 25 years! In fact I believe I weigh now what I did when I delivered my 31 year old daughter. Anyway, I am rambling, I have always eaten salads, and tried not to keep too much junk in the house because I did not want my girls growing up fat like I did. Thank God they are both normal sized people and can actually have ice cream and junk in their homes without feeling like they have to eat everything.
The house is coming along. The tree is gone, the out building is gone and replaced with a garden fence. We plan on planting our garden there next year. They start the digging for the footings for the new garage on Monday. This weekend is the Dream Cruise in Royal Oak and my DH's family come out of the woodwork for this event. Kind of bores me, but I go along. Then they are all coming over here on Sunday after church for a mini reunion type thing. So I know I will eat things that I don't normally eat, but darn it I had this surgery so that I could eat like a normal person. Normal people have a piece of birthday cake when there is a party. Normal people don't obsess over every morsel they put in their mouths. They eat party food at the party and get back on track the next day. So far I have been able to do that. The restriction helps with that one. Unfortunately for me I do have a sweet tooth so I know I have to watch it.
Anyway, you take care and know that you are doing what is best for you, your body and your family

Thanks Bernice!! It makes me feel better knowing people - someone all - understand where I am coming from. I am sure people tend to roll their eyes at this, but I AM a healthy eater. Apparently not 100% of the time since I got to the point I did - but it wasn't like I ballooned 100 lbs the last 5 years. I eat healthier than most I know and because of that is why I am worried about this surgery not working. My problem was portion control. I had watermelon last night. 4 or 5 chunks. Last year at this time I would have finished off 1/2 of the watermelon (craved watermelon big time when I was pregnant). I can't do that anymore thanks to my new tummy (and I had foamies too the first time I had a bite of watermelon. hmmm - wonder what it is?)
So this surgery wasn't to break my sweet tooth. I don't have one....nothing like my DH's at least. And believe me, if I did, I'd be in a whole world of trouble. Right now he has a Hostess stash of Twinkies and cupcakes. Milk & Dark Hershey Chocolate bars...some minis and Fastbreaks too. He has to have those chocolate chip cookies in the 2 lb tin of cookies from Meijer - so those are in the freezer. Mrs Smith Apple Pies. Ben & Jerry's Cherry Garcia & ice cream bars. Oh yeah, and several types of chips. SO yes, if I was a sweet eater, I'd be in big trouble!! lol He is 5'5" and weighs 140 lbs soaking wet. This stuff is a staple of his diet. He grew up on it. I didn't. I can not eat that crap without feeling like crap. I worry about him BIG TIME, but his whole family are like that and he sees nothing wrong. (BTW My cholesterol is 167. His is 255!)
My family is overweight - while yes, they are crappier eaters than me, with the exception of one, we still are prone to eat healthier foods - lots of veggies and salad. Our problem is our dinner consisted of meat, potatoes, veggie, salad, cottage cheese, bread and a big glass of milk. DH's family sees potatoes as a veggie. It is a given with our meals. That isn't me anymore, but that is how I was brought up. Potatoes and bread (or any baked good) very rarely graze my lips. Carbs, while I did eat more before surgery than I do now, still were something I watched. Even something low carb isn't low if you have 3 or 4 servings of it.... now I can only have 1 serving or less so that may be my safety net.
Now onto something different. How is your house coming along? Is it back together again? I want big trees around us, but we are also out in the open. Not much barrier from the heavy winds. I guess right after this house was built, the whole roof blew off in those straight line winds (yours wasn't from a tornado, was it?)

Gwen, I have been reading your posts and I totally understand where you are coming from. I have a few friends who have had WLS, but I am the only one with the sleeve. In fact, I am the only sleeve my doctor has done (usually a DS surgeon) and the only one in my support group. When they start talking about how the DS is a better surgery than the VSG, I just have to raise my hand and remind them that I had the VSG and am loosing just as well as they are. I know that I stand a bigger chance of failure, but we will just have to wait and see. My surgeon says don't worry about the carbs if they are from natural sources like vegetables and whole grains. Steer clear of processed foods.
About the watermelon. I say go for it. When I first ate watermelon, I could only get in a few bites before the foamies started. The next time I ate watermelon, I got a bowl of watermelon and an extra bowl. After I had swallowed my max of the pulp, I continued to bite, chew and then spit out the watermelon. I know that it sounds gross and my DH laughed at me, but I wanted to taste the watermelon and not just two bites. So I guess I had my watermelon and ate it too (kind of).
I also wanted to address slow loosing. My surgeon at the last support group meeting said that if you loose a considerable amt before surgery, you will loose slower after. Don't know how true it is, but you did loose great before the surgery and maybe that explains why you think it is slowing down. But, girl, your totals look good to me. Keep up the good work.

I don't know anyone else locally who has the sleeve. I don't know many who have had WLS at all. So I have to rely on my surgeon's office. I seem to be doing just fine by them. My weight is on track. The NUT seems uninterested in me. Probably since I have called with questions and am doing what they want me to with calories and protein. And I am probably a little less gung-ho about introducing everything. I would love a bagel (I think it sounds good, just may not taste the same) and I could have one, but I won't. The reason for having my sleeve was so I could have everything, but it didn't mean I was going to eat like I could have everything. KWIM?
My bloodwork has been good. I take my vitamin and thyroid meds faithfully. But I am confused about net carbs and things like that. Since I don't know I go by what the total is. I use my carb book for fresh things (although I am not nearly as worried about natual carbs as processed ones.) I log the carbs, but I don't do a running total like I do caloires and protein. I know if I had cereal, I am not going to have a protein bar or a protein shake the same day. I think that carbs are a rudder at this stage more than anything. They can direct where we go, but the engine is going to determin how fast.

I don't know anyone else locally who has the sleeve. I don't know
many who have had WLS at all. So I have to rely on my surgeon's
office. I seem to be doing just fine by them. My weight is on
track. The NUT seems uninterested in me. Probably since I have
called with questions and am doing what they want me to with calories
and protein. And I am probably a little less gung-ho about
introducing everything. I would love a bagel (I think it sounds
good, just may not taste the same) and I could have one, but I
won't. The reason for having my sleeve was so I could have
everything, but it didn't mean I was going to eat like I could have
everything. KWIM?

Hi and thanks for replying. I am not a carb junkie any more. I
haven't been in years. I know they love me. I am taking in more
than a strict Atkin's but it still isn't much. I watch them, but
know that right now my focus is on protein and water. And I agree -
they are too easy to get in. I am amazed at how fast they add up. I
pay enough attention to them to forego the cereal and milk. I want
the fiber and it is good cereal (Special K) but I can not to all the
carbs between the milk and cereal so I have been mixing it with
yogurt instead. Lot less carbs and more protein. Thick crunchy
cereal is....different...but it really isn't bad.
Thanks again!

Hi Sara.
I am thinking that too. I wish there was some plan to follow to help
find out what our perfect mix is. My NUT says at least 60g of
protein/day. I really think I need more like 80g. But maybe there is
more of a ying and yang with calories. Like 60g but only if you have
500 calories or less. And I know some say that they can't lose unless
they have carbs. I read where someone needed 100+g of protein a day to
lose. EEK! I don't think I could do it without supplements. I think
I could - and may - go back to just supplements for a while and give my
tummy a break.
I hear you about the exercise. I try to get out at least 3x a week to
walk with my kids (since I have 3 kids who don't walk, I need someone
to go with though). I have a membership to Curves and so want to go
back regularly. DH's work has him on an irregular schedule right now
and he doesn't want a stranger here babysitting when he is home. (He is
on 2nd shift. I am limited too. I guess I need to find some exercise
DVDs. I would love to try Tae Bo or alike...and Tai Chi.
Good luck to you!

Yeah, Lisa. I kind of figured ppl may, but people do what they feel
they need to. I often think of them (that one and others) as the
Wizards of VSG. Write a book already!! LOL!!
I will not be one to jump at the opportunity to scold or be
defensive. It does prevent me from posting much though. I do have
to say I have notice that has calmed down a bit.
I am getting to the point where either my taste buds are changing or
I have had my fill of the same ol stuff. I was all excited about
this tilapia I made. It tastes like lake water to me. That may be
because I've at a lot of tuna & salmon since I could have it.
I am going to have some watermelon, but I won't post it on OH. I'll
be lynched!! hee, hee
Thanks for the reassurance that I am not totally off mark here!

Hi Gwen,
I'm with you. I've noticed what makes the biggest weight loss different
is not sugars/carbs etc... but rather, protein protein protein.
Doesn't matter if I eat 70g carbs or 20 carbs. If I'm not getting my
80g protein in, then forget seeing the scale drop.
Everyone's weight loss is different. Prior to my surgery, My doc told
me my weight loss would be slower than most because I have a lot of
peripheral weight. He said I would really need to focus on exercise.
Sadly, being in school fulltime and working fulltime have discouraged
much of my work-out sessions, but I am working on fixing that.
As an employee of a bariatric Surgeon, I get annoyed by many
individuals on OH who think they are so "All-knowing" about the
advice to give people. Here's the 411, the majority of obesity
surgery patients ARE NOT CORRECTLY FOLLOWED-UP by the Physicians and
Dietitians, therefore 1/2 of what they say is based on what they
think they read, heard or thought.
Now, I understand that there are others who are followed
appropriately, but they do tend to be fewer.
My dietitians tells me carbs okay in minimun amounts. Just be
careful. Also, a Carb does not "count" as a carb if it is a protein
source. Therefore, your amount of total Carbs/Day varies. You want to
stay under say 60 carbs, but you are not counting carbs from protein
shakes etc... The same is true of fats. For example, I sometiems
snack on a few peanuts if I'm out and can't get my meal-time in. The
peanuts are a protein source for me therefore, they do not count as a
fat.
Of course, I say this, but for you it may be different. I follow my
diet with my dietitian. My doctor regularly checks my bloodwork and
makes sure things are going well.
I totally agree with you Gwen....and ya know, I think I know who ur talking about....no names tho...
I count carbs to a point.... I dont write down numbers, dont even count them....but I know pretty much what Im putting in my mouth...

I am kind of turned off by a certain person on OH since I think that they are too pushy when it comes to carbs.
Maybe I am wrong, but I am going to have carbs and not fret over every stinking one. I log each and every carb though. I range from 30-60 (only higher than 60 once that I am sure of). Some of the supplements from my surgeon's office have quite a few carbs even, so in the beginning I was at the mercy of taking in what ever just to get the protein and liquids in.

Milk is higher in carbs than I'd like, but I am not
going to stop consuming that either. So for someone to put their success on not eating more than 20 carbs or put that the reason for slow loss is because of carbs bothers me.
The same person has told me personally not to compare my weight loss to others "everyone is different" blah, blah, blah, but I feel their posts are "look at me and my weight loss. You too can have these results if you don't eat carbs." WELL. The reason I decided on surgery was to quit dieting. If it is all about protein and carbs, I could have saved a lot of worry, time and pain by going back on the Atkins diet!

Carbs can be good carbs can be bad depends on the
person and depends on the carbs.....As someone a year
out( ex super morbidly obese at 371) i can tell you
that you do indeed have to watch your carbs once you
start eating solids again because carbs are easy to
eat and u can easily eat way too many even with that
tiny stomach. I can process sugar better than i can
eat breads or wheat carbs....that is how my body

Hi Cindy!
When I stalled so early (starting 7 days out and only lost 8 lbs for
the rest of the month), I asked about carbs and the NUT said not to
worry. That no matter how much I got in, my calorie intake was still
too low (under 400/day) for them to have a gaining affect on my
weight. When I called, I was 4 weeks out. After posting this topic I
went and added my carbs up and I was getting less than 30 - usually
less than 20. SO my slow weight loss and stalls have nothing to do
with my carb intake. It would be great if it were only that easy
though. :-) Once I bumped up my calories and protein I started
losing more regularly. I still stall about once every 4-5 days for
up to 4-5 days. I have come to accept that is me. So I am going to
continue to keep an eye on the carbs, but focus on water and
protein. :-P

I am kind of turned off by a certain person on OH since I think that
they are too pushy when it comes to carbs.
Maybe I am wrong, but I am going to have carbs and not fret over
every stinking one. I log each and every carb though. I range from
30-60 (only higher than 60 once that I am sure of). Some of the
supplements from my surgeon's office have quite a few carbs even, so
in the beginning I was at the mercy of taking in what ever just to
get the protein and liquids in.
I have had a few bites of non-healthy things. Just to see what it
would do. (I don't want to find out in a restaurant or at someone's
home...unfortunatel y - no problems.) I honestly don't want to eat
anything yet, so my goal is not pleasure, but to just get in my
protein and water and I don't find time for much of anything else -
like even veggies which I miss so much! Milk is higher in carbs than
I'd like, but I am not going to stop consuming that either. So for
someone to put their success on not eating more than 20 carbs or put
that the reason for slow loss is because of carbs bothers me.
The same person has told me personally not to compare my weight loss
to others "everyone is different" blah, blah, blah, but I feel their
posts are "look at me and my weight loss. You too can have these
results if you don't eat carbs." WELL. The reason I decided on
surgery was to quit dieting. If it is all about protein and carbs, I
could have saved a lot of worry, time and pain by going back on the
Atkins diet!
And I feel that eating a healthy balance (and that means eventually
not having so much artificial sweetener)- but including some
(little) healthy carbs - is the idea here. My NUT does not say one
word about carbs other than only once all the protein water & veggies
are in. I have basically been on a low-carb diet for years so I am
already used to not eating a lot of the bad things anyway. I also
feel that if I go to a strict low-carb diet that I will be gaining
once I introduce them back in. This is a new way of eating for the
rest of my life. Not a diet during the "honeymoon" stage or to get
it off as fast as possible then let me and my body fight it out.....
So do you thing my way of thinking this is wrong?? Am I setting
myself up for failure? It isn't like I am not taking it seriously.
I'd like to think I am realistic and looking long term. I don't want
to drop 150 lbs only to gain back 50 or more. This is just laying
the plans for the rest of my life.
Thx! Gwen

Good evening ladies I finished my 2 weeks of liquids on thursday and was down a whopping 25 pounds in that 2 weeks of liquids. I am on high protien low carb for this next 2 weeks and then back to liquids again. Really working hard to attain that loss of 50 I need before the doc will sleeve me.I know my next 2 week loss will not be as much by any means but I feel happy I am on my way.
I have been MIA too. I got brave and decided to get into a craft show....my first ever. I am making diaper cakes and lovie blankets (well, if I ever get the diaper cakes done I will make lovie blankets.) So that has taken a lot of my time. I am down to 1 big cake to 'decorate' and 3 small to put together. Then I can move onto my sewing machine....eek.
I will be 2 months out tomorrow and as of today (and yesterday..... and the day before...and the day before that) I am down 29.2 lbs. I really REALLY thought I'd beat my 1st month weight loss of 17 lbs. Nope! 12.2. I hope there isn't a 5 lb difference each month. I will be gaining before I hit 6 mos out. Man, I wish I knew what was up with all these stalls! I know this fat has been with me along time, but enough is enough. It has outstayed it's welcome....it was never welcome anyway - it is a squatter. I'd think it'd be ticked at what little I've been feeding it anyway and seek shelter elsewhere. Oh well - eventually it will get a clue.

Thanks Sara,
I am really happy with the progress I have made with losing weight
and changing my eatting habits. I am eatting healthier and working
out and that's what I will need to do for the rest of my life if I
want to lose weight and keep it off. I am ready for surgery and I
can't wait until Kaiser schedules my surgery.

When I get hungry, my tummy growls and makes th worst noises, i get a headache and a bit nauseous....ive always done that tho, even before surgery...
Now, when I get full, if I listen closely, I can feel my tummy is full, but when I take that last bite, trying to clean my plate, I feel the lump in my chest, the tightness, the uncomfy feeling... I have to get up and walk around, then I will start burping and will feel better...but i can still tell Ive eaten too much... and this is common for me.. Sometimes, I stop before this happens, but not often. This part has been hard for me to learn...Listen To My Body!
From: Gwen <pengwen13@...> Subject: [AstronomicallyStunningVSGer] What are your hunger/full signals? To: AstronomicallyStunningVSGer@yahoogroups.com Date: Thursday, July 24, 2008, 3:03 PM
I am still learning to listen to my tummy. I had made it about a week without getting foamie, then they came back. Dense proteins are stil hard - tuna used to be good, but that has been funky lately. OMG! I will totally forget and eat too fast. I pay for it. I am glad eating is still hard since it is going to take me a bit longer to get this down. Then if I have a bad time eating, I can't eat much more the rest of the day.
I was just wondering what your tummy tells you?
When I am hungry (need to eat) I will get really deep bubble/burps. There is nothing else like them - well, maybe like drinking a Coke fast and you can feel the bubble come up from your toes and then it produces a huge throatie belch (yeah, I got class! :-)) - it is kind of like that but not as forceful or nose tingly. The other day I got the hiccups BAD. I may have ignored the slow burps. I have to really listen to get
what it is telling me though.
Then when I am full - if I eat slow enough - I will get a slight tightness (not quite a full feeling. I really don't feel full ever.) and then I will hiccup once or twice.
If I push it, I get really uncomfortable and then feel like it is all sitting in my esophogus... .. like eating too fast or something dry..... and I need a drink. IF I take that drink, I feel like I am going to die and have to stick my head in the toilet. :-P
