The appendix is a small, tube-like structure attached to the first
part of the large intestine, also called the right colon. From the
surface, the appendix is located in the lower right portion of the
abdomen. It has no known function except for some immune cells that
produce antibodies for body's defence mechanism. Removal of the
appendix appears to cause no change in digestive or immune function.
Appendicitis is an inflammation of the appendix. It usually presents as
acute onset of central abdominal pain which later can be felt in the
right lower abdominal region. There can be associated
nausea,vomiting,fever or diarrhoea.If these symptoms are present,one
should not take medications on their own but should visit their
nearest doctors for examination. If the doctor suspects acute
appendicitis he will then refer to the surgeon without delay. One can
also pay direct visit to a surgeon with those symptoms.
For most acute appendicitis, once it starts, there is no effective
medical therapy, so appendicitis is considered a surgical emergency.
When treated promptly by an operation called appendectomy, most
patients recover without difficulty. If treatment is delayed, some
appendix can burst, causing serious infection in the abdominal cavity
and even death. Appendicitis is the most common acute surgical
emergency of the abdomen. Anyone can get appendicitis, but it occurs
most often between the ages of 10 and 30.It is said that about 2% of
any population will get acute appendicitis.
