It's not always scar tissue, the reason it is an "-itis" is because it's an auto-immune disease meaning the body is attacking the tissues and causing the problem. The Arachnoid membrane is a very thin membrane like a spider web, that covers the brain and spinal cord that lies 'between' the dura mater (Latin for "hard mother") and pia mater (Latin for "tender mother"). This tissue is to allow the nerves and brain a layer that will remove friction as the body moves round on the nerve fibers. When it becomes sticky the nerves are agitated and it causes pain. There are many things that can cause a body to go into an auto-immune disease condition, doesn't need to be caused by an outside event like injury or surgery. Any MD should be able to help understand this and explain the pain, the differences are in which doctor will actually call it what it is, it can be impossible to see on any scans so many doctors are reluctant to call it Arach. In short anything that has damaged this tissue and it can't heal properly can be called Arachnoiditis but in it's true form it is an auto-immune disease since it has the "-itis" in the word.

Thanks for the definition of having scar tissue growing through the spinal nerves. Is this verified?

Hello Lauren, I'm so sorry that you have to endure this pain at such at such a young age. I had my first back surgery a spinal fusion at L5-S1. I have been in chronic pain since. I have since had 4 more surgeries to fix all the mistakes and misdiagnosis that the doctors made. I now have Arachnoiditis. I don't understand how you could have gotten this condition from a hysterectomy. Have you had anything done to your back. You could have gotten it from an epidural if you had one for your hysterectomy or if you had a child. But, Arachnoiditis is scar tissue that has growen through your spinal nerves. I wish you the best. If you ever want to talk more please feel free to write to me anytime. Sincerely Michael in Washington State
