Last Saturday's Self-Hypnosis workshop in Kensington was another great success.  Yet again we had a wonderful mixture of people in the audience, from psychiatric professionals, hypnotherapists, and NLP practitioners to complete newcomers to the subject, office workers, tradesmen, and students.  It just goes to prove that hypnosis is indeed for everyone.  A few of the feedback comments are included below.  Thanks once again to everyone who participated!
The HypnoSynthesis(tm) workshop has evolved over the past few years into something that I think of as a kind of "Self-Hypnosis Gymnasium", by listening to our participants we've gradually developed a programme of exercises for developing and enhancing practical self-hypnosis skills -"hypnotic press-ups and sit-ups", as I like to call them!  We realised long ago that people want more than a lecture about hypnosis -they can get that from a book, or even the internet.  That's why we decided to develop a system for teaching self-hypnotic skills in a practical manner, using our special system of group exercises.  I can honestly say, and participants tell me they agree, that there's not another workshop like this around.
We are now running these events in central London at the end of every month (except December and January).  See the website below for details, or for a larger sample of testimonials:

www.HypnoSynthesis.com

"I liked the calm, confident and professional manner in which Don conducted the workshop and managed to share his vast experience and effortlessly induce trance in us."  (John, Print Broker, East London)

"What I liked most were the effective ways to get to a rapid hypnosis/relaxation state.  I think this will be very effective in helping me to achieve more integration in my life."  (Ulrike, Psychiatric Doctor, SE London)

"I liked the atmosphere, practical exercises, and Don's approachability.  This was a lovely and important day for me.  Thank you."  (Robert, University Professor, SW London)

We're pleased to announce that improvements are underway on our website www.HypnoSynthesis.com.  We now have a simpler navigation format that permits easier access to the many resources available online for those curious to learn more about Self-Hypnosis.  We are also in the process of updating the information on Self-Hypnosis available there, with the addition of new material from our popular training manual on the subject.
Trevor Silvester, the editor of the Hypnotherapy Journal (periodical of the National Council for Hypnotherapy) was present at Don's talk on Self-Hypnosis & Classical Philosophy at this summer's NCH conference, and published the following brief review:

"After lunch I had the joy of listening to someone in complete control of their subject, and whose passion for it kept the audience absorbed throughout.  Fancy talking about hypnosis and ancient philosophy?  How about being interesting at the same time?  Me neither.  Donald Robertson did, and he triumphed.  An absolutely fascinating talk, and an inspirational call to live a real life."  (The Hypnotherapy Journal, Issue 3, Volume 3)

For those interested in this aspect of Self-Hypnosis a new article will be available on the website shortly entitled "Socrates and Self-Hypnosis."
Places are still available for our forthcoming workshops.  We only have two more this year though, and a two month break, before the programme starts again in Feb 2004.  In January prices are due to be increased again, so call now, or use the booking form on the website, to get the current early booking rate (£30 discount) on our 2004 workshops.

Traumatic Incident Reduction Seminar (London)
Please email me at Hypnonaut@... to indicate if you would be interested in the following event.  I'm considering organising an introductory seminar on Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR), a rapid trauma therapy (see below).  It will probably take place in central London, some time in late November.  At the moment we plan to make the event low-cost, about £10, and lasting roughly 3 hours.  We hope to negotiate with the trainers to make special offers available to participants who wish to proceed with certificated TIR training.
Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) is highly systematic, non-judgmental, focused method for reducing or eliminating the effects of trauma and related negative emotions or unwanted attitudes. In TIR, the client repeatedly reviews a traumatic incident, first going through it silently from beginning to end, then reporting what happened, until a point of resolution or "end point" for that incident is achieved. As needed, the client may is guided in addressing one or more earlier, similar incidents to achieve an end point.

Understanding and Resolving Trauma

Introductory Seminar on Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR)

This talk covers the key principles that underlie a variety of effective approaches to stress and trauma counselling. It then goes on to discuss how Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR) achieves them in practice. This is an opportunity to learn about effective trauma counselling as well as TIR in particular.

“If I had been trained in TIR when I worked with crime victims and witnesses, I would never have left that field."
Laura K. DeCorte, LCSW Tampa, FL

Brief Description of TIR:

Traumatic Incident Reduction (TIR), is a unique, non-evaluative, client-directed desensitization procedure that enables the client to undo repression and increase awareness of any event he feels may still effect his present. This is achieved through a systematic and highly focused inspection, by the client of his past. TIR also responds to how traumatic experiences ‘network’ and identifies other less obviously related incidents that can be complicit in the maintenance of symptoms.  Developed by Frank A. Gerbode, M.D., Stephen Bisbey, and others, TIR is best known for its use as a consistently effective tool in the rapid
resolution of virtually all trauma-related conditions, including PTSD.  In competent hands, however, TIR also has applications in addressing and resolving a litany of other conditions representing a significant part of DSM-IV. A partial list would certainly include adjustment disorders, acute stress, traumatic bereavement, mood disorders, major depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, sexual abuse, and phobias.

Please email Hypnonaut@... to let me know if you are interested in the following, proposed Self-Help group.  We need to drum up enough support to get the project off the ground, so please speak up if you are interested...

How does this sound...  I'm in the process of organising a special Self-Help Book Club which will take place at a very special central London location (shh... top secret because it's still in negotiation).  The group will last around 2 hours and meet once per month, probably on a Thursday evening (although that may change to a Sunday).  I plan to facilitate discussion of a range of best-selling self-help and personal development books; where possible practical exercises will be included which complement the reading.
How are we going to do that?  Well, I intend to ask all particpants to acquire a copy of the following book which contains fifty short chapters summarising the content of fifty well-known self-help books.  Each month participants will be asked to read the chapter up for discussion, classics which range from Ralph Waldo Emerson's magnificent essay "Self-Reliance" to Steven Covey's Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.  If you are really keen you can, of course, buy the actual books referred to in the various chapters and read those as well.  The chapters themselves are short and to the point, each is about four or five pages, discussion will be focused on the group members' responses to the key ideas.
Anyone and everyone is welcome.  You do not have to speak to attend the group, you can just sit and listen, you are welcome to say as much or as little as you like.  The price is yet to be confirmed but it will either be free or (very) low-cost.  I hope to be able to make it a fund raiser and donate the attendance fees to a registered charity.

I have a very exciting announcement to make!  I have spoken to the events manager in the Oxford Street branch of Borders bookshop in London and we have arranged a special self-help book club starting next month.  At each meeting we will be discussing a best selling self-help title as well as doing some practical group exercises.
Please note: you don't even have to read the whole book!  We will be basing the group around a single core text (see below).  "Fifty Self-Help Classics" contains fifty short chapters, each summarising the contents of a famous self-help book.  You can choose whether you simply want to read the summary in the core text, or go further and read the book up for discussion itself.  See the schedule below for details of the books we intend to discuss.  Our first meeting will be a more informal, inaugural event, with some discussion of Steven Covey's well-known classic The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.

Here's a piece of interesting research, the programme seems to have lasted a long time, nevertheless it shows pretty good results from self-hypnosis in a reasonably large group of individuals with stress-related conditions.

In a research study involving over 100 patients suffering from stress-related conditions it was found that 75% felt their symptoms were improving after 12 weeks of self-hypnosis practice, within one year 72% of the group reported complete remission of their symptoms as a result of the self-hypnosis. (Maher-Loughnan, G.P. 1980, "Hypnosis: Clinical application of hypnosis in medicine', British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 23: 447-55)

Would anyone be interested in attending a special free-of-charge event about the use of classical philosophy in modern personal development?  I'm interested in the idea of basing a 2-hour talk and discussion on the famous Meditations of the Stoic philosopher, and Roman emperor and general, Marcus Aurelius Antonius.  (I'm reliably informed Marcus was played by Richard Harris in the film Gladiator!)  You don't need to know anything about philosophy to attend, it would be an introduction to the subject.  I propose to run it as a special session of the Self-Help Book Club at Borders Book shop near Oxford Circus in London, open to anyone to attend.  Email me at the address below if you're interested so I can get an idea of possible numbers.

Friends, Romans, and countrymen... you are cordially invited to a forthcoming "special meeting" of the Self-Help Book Club (website below).  We will be meeting as usual, at the big Borders bookshop in central London, this time to discuss classical philosophy and its relationship with self-help, psychotherapy, and personal development.  This is my "pet subject" and so many people have expressed an interest that we have decided to break from our usual schedule of events to run this special meeting on the best known and most accessible text in the genre: the famous Meditations of the Roman emperor Marcus Aurelius.  (You should find a version of this book in virtually any bookshop.)

As always: It's completely free of charge, everyone is welcome, and you don't even need to read the book!

I look forward to meeting you there.
