SUPPORT INTERNATIONAL DON'T NUKE THE CLIMATE CAMPAIGN!
DECEMBER 11-12 CALL-IN AND ACTION DAYS
November 23, 2009
Dear Friend of NIRS,
The behind-the-scenes maneuvering on the Senate climate bill is reaching a
fever pitch, especially the efforts to add tens--or even hundreds--of
billions of dollars in new taxpayer-backed support for the nuclear power
industry.
Sens. Kerry (D-MA), Graham (R-SC) and Lieberman (I-CT) are actively
shopping around potential benefits for the nuclear industry in a misguided
means
of garnering support for the climate bill. Sens. Webb (D-VA) and Alexander
(R-TN) released an absurd bill last week calling for $100 billion in new
taxpayer loan guarantees for new reactors, as well as billions more for
breeder reactors, small reactors, and reprocessing. Sens. Udall (D-CO),
Bingaman (D-NM) and Murkowski (R-AK) have introduced new legislation to
jumpstart
a 10-year program to develop new "small, modular" nuclear reactors.
The good news is that none of this is set in stone, none of it need be
enacted--there is still time for us all to act and stop the folly of wasting
our taxpayer dollars on dangerous and dirty nuclear reactors and direct our
resources to the safer, cleaner and cheaper energy technologies that will
power our future.
The December Copenhagen climate negotiations offer a terrific opportunity
to send a message that nuclear power is neither an effective nor acceptable
means of addressing the climate crisis. Our colleagues at WISE,
Greenpeace, Sortir du Nucleaire, Friends of the Earth, International Forum on
Globalization and others will be in Copenhagen with a strong Don't Nuke the
Climate message.
On Saturday, December 12, they've called for an international day of
action to support their efforts in Copenhagen. In solidarity, NIRS is calling
for National Don't Nuke the Climate Call-In and Action Days to take place on
December 11-12 across the US.
Here is what you can do:
*First: support the international movement by signing the Don't Nuke the
Climate statement prepared by the French organization Sortir du Nucleaire.
_You can do so (in English) here_
(http://org2.democracyinaction.org/dia/track.jsp?v=2&c=LsgMop+9tRX4Ygd0cYfRNQIqt\
3GTDFcD) . Organization and
individual signers are all welcome and encouraged. Note: take a few minutes to
look
around this website! You can also post a photo of yourself and join more
than 2600 others in the photo gallery, watch the great film Climate of Hope,
and more.
*Second, prepare now for the national call-in days. On December 11-12,
let's all call the Senate and tell every Senator loudly and clearly: no nukes
in the climate bill!
*Third, don't stop there! Make these call-in days and support actions for
Copenhagen special. Stage a small protest outside your Senators' district
offices: bring cellphones and ask people walking by to call their Senators
right there and then. Set up a meeting in a coffeeshop, student union, in
front of a food-co-op or other public gathering place, and ask everyone who
comes to call their senators. We call on every grassroots group to support
our colleagues in Copenhagen with demonstrations at local proposed reactor
sites, existing reactors, Federal Buildings or anywhere else you can think
of. Or make up your own action!
Help get the most people involved as possible, and the most people calling
in to the Senate as possible.
NIRS will help you organize in any way we can; for example, we can tell
other people in your area about your event. We also will be providing talking
points for phone calls, and for your outreach work and contacts with the
media in your area.
After Thanksgiving, we'll also be providing you a new letter to send to
your Senators, bringing the facts to them about the continuing dangers of
nuclear power, the daily radiation releases, the deficient designs, the
growing piles of lethal radioactive waste.... Sometimes it seems our
legislators
have forgotten that nuclear power presents risks to our health and
environment no sane society need accept. We will ask you to circulate that
letter
as widely as possible.
Finally, just like most small retail outlets, we receive nearly 50% of our
annual revenue during the holiday season from November through January.
_Your most generous possible contribution now _

the outreach and actions necessary to change the tenor of debate in
Washington throughout 2010. We're up to the job, if we have the resources. But
we can't do it without you.

Flu, Viruses, and Vitamin C Megadoses: A Personal Statement
By Robert G. Smith, PhD
(OMNS, November 17, 2009) Like most Americans, throughout most of my life
I have occasionally been down with a virus. But for a long time, a simple
cold for me started as a headache, sore throat and congestion in my nasal
passages, and typically progressed to prolonged infection in my lungs, and a
terrible cough. The whole experience took up to two weeks for recovery from
the virus, and several more weeks for my lungs to recover.
In his book Vitamin C and the Common Cold (1), Linus Pauling explained
that vitamin C, taken at the proper dose, can prevent a virus from taking hold
in the body. This pioneering book, written back in 1970, was ignored by
many doctors but was well-received by the public. One chemistry professor
told me that he had heard of Pauling's book and the vitamin C therapy but
didn't think taking a big dose of an acid, even a mild one like ascorbic acid,
would be good for the body. As for me, I imagined Pauling was probably
correct about the details he had researched, because he was a renowned
scientist and knew much more than most about biochemistry. Perhaps, I thought,
he
had simply gotten some of the medical details wrong or had missed some of
the important studies about the effects of vitamins. But I started taking
1,000 mg of vitamin C every day and kept this up for several decades.
Two years ago, I decided to look further for myself. I looked online and
found a recent book by Hickey and Roberts (2) that summarized 60 years of
vitamin C research and revisited the issue of Dr. Pauling's rejection by the
medical establishment. Pauling and a few brave physicians had continued
research into the use of vitamin C to prevent illness and had gained a lot of
new knowledge and intuition about its use. The book explained that all of
the studies showing little effect of vitamin C had serious flaws. It also
carefully debunked the myths about hazards of vitamin C use. I also read
Pauling's newer book on vitamin therapy, How to Live Longer and Feel Better
(3), and was amazed at his clear explanation of individual differences in the
need for essential nutrients. Pauling had been right all along, and now
there was a lot of new knowledge about how to use vitamin C for best benefit.
Next, I found a book by Thomas Levy on the use of vitamin C to cure
infectious disease. (4) All of these books contained numerous references to the
scientific literature.
So I started taking 2,000-3,000 milligrams of vitamin C every few hours,
and more when I went to bed at night. This caused no discomfort and only
occasionally produced a minor laxative effect from vitamin C that was
unabsorbed. Then, if I ever got an infection, I followed Dr. Robert Cathcart's
instructions about going to "bowel tolerance" of vitamin C. (5) Usually when I
get a cold or the flu there is an initial period of several hours when I
feel tired, with a slight headache, sometimes with a slight sore throat or
sniffle. As the books described, I could stop the symptoms of the oncoming
infection within an hour or two by taking a higher dose of vitamin C at
shorter intervals (3,000-5,000 milligrams every 20 minutes). Did it work? Well,
that first year I didn't get any colds or flu, though in previous years I
usually had 2-3 colds.
Continuing to read about vitamin C and its effects, I read the new Hickey
and Saul (6) book. The authors presented a very clear rationale for
ingesting vitamin C at a high level to bowel tolerance. Normally, the body does
not take up vitamin C from the gut very efficiently at high doses. However,
when the body is stressed with bacteria, viruses, or toxins, the need for
vitamin C goes up tremendously, and the gut absorbs proportionately more.
Now, after two years of taking high doses of vitamin C whenever I feel
symptoms of a cold or flu, I haven't had any colds or flu. I have found,
exactly as Hickey and Saul report, that it is possible to feel the symptoms wax
and wane in one's body in inverse proportion to the dose that one takes
throughout the day. This is a helpful scientific observation that anyone can
verify whenever one treats a cold or influenza with vitamin C. Although in
previous years I typically got a secondary bacterial infection in my lungs,
requiring antibiotics and another two weeks for recovery beyond the
duration of the cold, now with my vitamin C therapy I simply don't get a cough
at
all, much less a prolonged bacterial infection. From this experience, it is
obvious to me that vitamin C helps to strengthen the immune response.
It is also now obvious to me that all the years I had been taking 1,000
mg/day and continued to get two or three colds, the amount was simply not
enough. I ride my bicycle in to work throughout the year, even when it is
freezing cold in the winter, and this puts a severe stress on my lungs. The
books I've read explain that any severe stress, for example, a low-grade
bacterial infection, or an injury, increases the body's need for an
anti-oxidant, and lowers the level of vitamin C in the blood. Although 1,000
milligrams
of vitamin C per day does some good, it simply is not enough to suffice
for the body's needs when an infection comes on.
Most animal species make in the neighborhood of 5,000-10,000 mg/day of
vitamin C in their own bodies; this is the norm for all mammals except
primates, some fruit eating bats, and guinea pigs. And it is known that during
times of stress or illness, the majority of animal species dramatically
increase their need and production of vitamin C. We humans can respond to this
increased need by taking mega-doses of vitamin C when we start to feel a
virus taking hold. When we do so, our bodies will be able to fight it off more
readily.
Every year there are a few reports ostensibly showing some problem with
mega-doses of vitamin C. But after close scrutiny none have held true, and
the Hickey and Saul book explains why very clearly. Every individual
2,000-3,000 milligram dose I take allows my body, according to Hickey's dynamic
flow model, to eliminate any excess after the vitamin performs its function.
No heartburn, sometimes a little gas, very little laxative effect, and this
is reduced by lower doses. For me, this is a small price to pay for not
having several prolonged three- to four-week periods per year during which I'm
essentially out of operation with congestion and a terrible cough. If
everyone could read the Pauling, Levy and Hickey and Saul books, I imagine we'd
have a lot less illness in our country. Does this mean that we could stop
the current flu epidemic with vitamin C? I suspect that if clinics around
the country could make the facts known about vitamin C and give some simple
instructions about its use, then yes, this could be accomplished. That is,
if we take large enough doses.

Q: I can't stand this back pain any longer. But I'm not sure I want to go
to a doctor about it. All they seem to do is prescribe pills that knock you
out, or try to get you on the operating table. And I've never witnessed
anyone who's had back surgery come out feeling all that much better. Do you
have any suggestions?
Dr. Wright: There are many natural options you can try to relieve your
pain before submitting to narcotics or surgery.
First, you might want to try willow bark, the natural anti-inflammatory
that actually served as the basis for aspirin. Many researchers have
maintained that willow bark has even more to offer than our synthetic
pharmaceuticals when it comes to relieving back pain.
Another possibility to explore is vitamin D deficiency. In fact, the Mayo
Clinic did a study several years ago in an inner city clinic that
discovered 93 percent of the 150 people with complaints of chronic, non-specific
low
back pain had vitamin D deficiency. And these weren't just older
folks...they ranged in age from 10 to 65 years old.
Also, just a few weeks ago, more news emerged regarding the benefits of
acupuncture for treating low back pain. Acupuncture involves inserting very
thin, flexible needles just under the skin along specific points on the body
that relate to organs, areas of the body, or body systems. The needles
work to correct the flow of energy (or chi) through the body, alleviating any
imbalances or blockages that might be causing pain.

Indian Point puts public health at grave risk
By JOSEPH J. MANGANO
First published in print: Tuesday, November 10, 2009
A major battle over the future of New York's energy policy is being fought
at Indian Point, 75 miles south of Albany. The battle is not just about
energy, but public health.

Indian Point is the site of two large nuclear reactors operating since the
mid-1970s. Because Indian Point's federal licenses will expire in several
years, Entergy Nuclear of Jackson, Miss., which owns the reactors, has
asked federal regulators to extend them for another 20 years.
The proposal has drawn fire from New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo,
and from environmental groups. A total of 10 organizations have filed legal
papers opposing the 20-year extension. If they are successful, Indian Point
will close permanently.
But if they do not succeed, Indian Point will continue to operate for a
long time. And there will be serious threats to public health.
The most ominous threat is that of a meltdown. Indian Point stores nuclear
waste in deep pools of constantly cooled water, equal to hundreds of
Hiroshima bombs. Loss of cooling water, from sabotage or accident, would heat
this waste to dangerous levels, causing a release into the environment. In an
area where 21 million people live within 50 miles of the plant, safe
evacuation would be impossible, and many thousands would suffer from acute
radiation poisoning or cancer.
Aging and corroding reactor parts make the chances of another Chernobyl
more possible. A recent report found five near miss meltdowns from mechanical
problems at Indian Point from 1999-2004 – the fourth most of any U.S.
nuclear plant. And a terrorist act against a nuclear plant remains a constant
threat. On 9/11, one of the hijacked planes flew directly over Indian Point
on its way to the World Trade Center.
But a meltdown may not be needed for Indian Point to harm the people who
live near it. Like all reactors, they must routinely release some of the
radioactive and cancer-causing chemicals they generate into local air and
water. There are more than 100 such chemicals, including Strontium-90,
Iodine-131, and Cesium-137 -- the same as in fallout after atomic bomb tests
years
ago.
The three New York counties with the highest rates of thyroid cancer --
Rockland, Putnam and Orange -- all are situated within 20 miles of Indian
Point. Particles of radioactive iodine, created only in bomb tests and
reactors, attack the thyroid gland, leading to cancer. Scientists have found a
high risk of thyroid cancer after exposure to the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs,
Chernobyl accident and Nevada atomic bomb tests. There are no other known
causes of thyroid cancer.
Any decision on the future of Indian Point should be based not just on
energy needs and costs, but on public health interests. Decades after being
introduced, nuclear power still poses health risks. Future risks are even
greater, since reactors are aging and huge amounts of waste are building up. A
sound energy policy should focus on safe sources, such as wind and solar
power. Federal regulators should not allow a threat to the health of
millions to operate for 20 more years.
Joseph J. Mangano is executive director of the Radiation and Public Health
Project, a research and education organization based in New York.

Dr. Jonathan V.Wright,MD _www.wrightnewsletter.com_
(http://www.wrightnewsletter.com) in his newsletters of February 2009 and
November 2009 wrote
about the use of B-Complex and trace minerals for Mental Health conditions
such as bi-polar disorder. Preliminary studies at the University of
Calgary,Canada have shown some effectiveness with atypical obsessive-compulsive
disorder, pervasive developmental delays and attention deficit
disorder.,Asperger's syndrome, generalized anxiety disorder,Pader-Willi
syndrome
depression,anxiety and rage.
The study in the article used a proprietary formula consisting of Vitamins
A,C,D and E, 8 B Complex vitamins in fairly low doses even if you have to
take 4 pills per day as the label recommends, the minerals
Calcium,Phosphorus,Magnesium, Potassium,,Iodine, Zinc,Selenium and Copper. The
formula was
also recommended by Dr.Charles Popper,MD an eminent Harvard Medical School
psychopharmacologist who found an 86% of bipolar patients showed a
positive response. The somewhat pricey patented formula can be seen at
_www.truehope.com_ (http://www.truehope.com) But you can find the nutrients
at a
better price in most health food stores.
I would add the significant benefit for epilepsy, in my own case, my
epilepsy was completely reversed using B Complex vitamins and trace minerals.
In my case I simultaneously took both vitamin B Complex supplements (20 mg)
and dietary change to include large amounts of liver, dark leafy green
vegetables, whole wheat bread and brown rice. Other people with epilepsy who
have tried this have found it successful. For some B Complex pills have not
worked, but consumption of foods high in B Complex and trace minerals has
worked. Other people have reported success for schizophrenia.
There will be a conference on Micronutrients for Mental Health, in San
Francisco, California on Friday December 4 and Saturday December 5,2009.
Speakers will include Dr.Popper and Dr.Bonnie Kaplan,PhD researcher on this
formula. Also speaking will be Dr.Scott Shannon,MD who will present on
Micronutrients for mental health in children, Carol Banyas,MD,PhD and Larry
Cormier,MD on micronutrients in adults with bipolar and depression. Dr.Daniel
Smith,DC will discuss the role of amino acids in mental health. The conference
website is _www.mmhforum.org_ (http://www.mmhforum.org)
Actually the treatment for many mental health or psychiatric diseases have
a very long pedigree in traditional medical literature. According to the
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) the US Government agency funding
research on this topic, the symptoms of schizophrenia include
