file an Amicus Brief in the Electrical Sensitivity and Disability Rights case
  outlined below:

As you know, on July 5, 2011 a New Mexico federal judge  ruled that the
Telecommunications Act preempts (partially repeals) the  Americans with
Disabilities Act. I have appealed that decision to the Tenth  Circuit
Court of Appeals in Denver, and the opening brief is due November  10.

If you know of an organization that might be interested in filing  an
amicus curiae ("friend of the court") brief, please let me know as  soon
as possible. Organizations concerned with disabilities or civil  rights
may be alarmed by this court ruling and may wish to file a brief.  Upon
request I can send interested organizations a draft of the brief that  we
are writing, and that we want them to support. Any amicus brief would  be
due November 17.

We have raised about $20,000 towards legal fees;  THANK YOU to all who
have contributed!

A local attorney, Lindsay  Lovejoy, has been doing much of the legal
research on this case. I want to  tell you a little about Lindsay,
because he is a rare asset to our local as  well as national community,
and because we may lose him shortly if we do not  find a way to fund his
work. Lindsay is an excellent, highly experienced solo  attorney who has
been taking on causes that are being fought by people  without much
money, having to do with nuclear waste, nuclear proliferation,  and
electromagnetic radiation. He has just filed a brief, also in the  Tenth
Circuit, for Los Alamos Study Group, which wants to block  construction
of a new six billion dollar plutonium facility at LANL. It will  not be
financially possible for him to continue this type of private  legal
practice unless we find a source of ongoing funding. My organization  has
already applied for one grant that could include a salary for  our

Dear Members,

On July 5,2011 a federal district court judge in New Mexico ruled that the
Telecommunications Act preempts the Americans with Disabilities
Act(ADA),even if  such an interpretation would "condemn a class of citizens to
death
because of  their disability." He further ruled that the Telecommunications
Act supercedes  the Equal Protection Clause and the Due Process Clause of the
Fourteenth  Amendment.

The decision by Judge James A. Parker goes to the essence of the conflict
between wireless technology and health. But the breadth of the decision will
  also have implications for every person with a disability in this country,
all  disability organizations, and fundamental civil liberties. What
remains of the  ADA if it cannot even prevent a taking of life? What remains of
our  constitution? This opinion is so egregious and clear that it presents an
opportunity on appeal to link our issue to popular issues to generate real
publicity, and to involve influential people all over the country.

The case, Firstenberg v. City of Santa Fe #1:11-cv-00008-JAP-WDS, relates
to AT&T's upgrade of all of its cell towers in Santa Fe, which occurred last
  November 15. In district court, I argued that the city's failure to
require a  permit from AT&T for its upgrades is part of a systemic policy that
discriminates against people with disabilities. I also argued that because the
  Telecommunications Act requires universal coverage of the United States
with  "advanced telecommunications services," people with electromagnetic
hypersensitivity will have no place to live where they can survive.

You can help. The judge's ruling must be appealed to the Tenth Circuit
Court of Appeals by August 4,2011. Last Sunday I was on a teleconference with
people in several parts of the country who are involved with this issue,
including some who have brought related lawsuits or are considering doing so.
They are looking for a lawyer or disability organization to appeal this
case.  However, time is short, and there is a good attorney here in Santa Fe
who will  take the case if we can raise $20,000 in the next two weeks. We
already have  commitments totaling $5,000.

If you work with a disability organization, please give them a copy of this
  letter and ask them if they want to become involved , either by filing an
amicus  brief or taking on the case now. Also send copies of this letter to
other  individuals or organizations who may be interested in helping.

What Kind of Medical Study Would Have Grandma Believe that Her Daily
Multivitamin is Dangerous?

(OMNS, Oct 12, 2011) A newly released  study suggests that multivitamin and
nutrient supplements can increase the  mortality rate in older women [1].
However, there are several concerns  about the study's methods and
significance.
     *   The study was observational, in which  participants filled out a
survey about their eating habits and their use  of supplements. It reports
only a small increase in overall mortality  (1%) from those taking
multivitamins. This is a small effect, not much  larger than would be expected
by
chance. Generalizing from such a small  effect is not scientific.
     *   The study actually reported  that taking supplements of B-complex,
vitamins C, D, E, and calcium and  magnesium were associated with a lower
risk of  mortality. But this was not emphasized in the abstract, leading  the
non-specialist to think that all supplements were associated with
mortality. The report did not determine the amounts of vitamin and  nutrient
supplements taken, nor whether they were artificial or natural.  Further, most
of
the association with mortality came from the use of  iron and copper
supplements, which are known to be potentially  inflammatory and toxic when
taken by
older people, because they tend to  accumulate in the body [2,3,4]. The risk
from taking iron supplements  should not be generalized to imply that all
vitamin and nutrient  supplements are harmful.
     *   The study lacks scientific plausibility  for several reasons. It
tabulated results from surveys of 38,000 older  women, based on their recall
of what they ate over an 18-year period.  But they were only surveyed 3 times
during that period, relying only on  their memory of what foods and
supplements they took. This factor alone  causes the study to be unreliable.
     *   Some of these women smoked (~15%) or  had previously (~35%), some
drank alcohol (~45%), some had high blood  pressure (~40%), and many of them
developed heart disease and/or cancer.  Some preexisting medical conditions
were taken into account by adjusting  the risk factors, but this caused the
study to contradict what we  already know about efficacy of supplements. For
example, the study  reports an increase in mortality from taking vitamin D,
when adjusted  for several health-relevant factors. However, vitamin D has
recently  been clearly shown to be helpful in preventing heart disease [5]
and  many types of cancer [6], which are major causes of death. Furthermore,
supplement users were twice as likely to be on hormone replacement
therapy, which is a more plausible explanation for increased mortality  than
taking
supplements.
     *   The effect of doctor recommendations  was not taken into account.
By their own repeated admissions,  medical doctors and hospital nutritionists
are more likely to  recommend a daily multivitamin, and only a
multivitamin, for their  sicker patients. The study did not take this into
account. All
it did was tabulate deaths and attempt to correct the numbers for some
prior health conditions. The numbers reported do not reflect other  factors
such as developing disease, side effects of pharmaceutical  prescriptions, or
other possible causes for the mortality. The study  only reports statistical
correlations, and gives no plausible cause for  a claimed increase in
mortality from multivitamin supplements.
     *   The effect of education was not taken  into account. When a doctor
gives advice about illnesses, well-educated  people will often respond by
trying to be proactive. Some will take  drugs prescribed by the doctor, and
some will try to eat a better diet,  including supplements of vitamins and
nutrients. This is suggested by  the study itself: the supplement users in the
survey had more education  than those who did not take supplements. It seems
likely, therefore, the  participants who got sick were more likely to have
taken supplements.  Because those who got sick are also more likely to die,
it stands to  reason that they would also be more likely to have taken
supplements.  This effect is purely statistical; it does not represent an
increase in  risk that taking supplements of vitamins and essential nutrients
will
cause disease or death. This type of statistical correlation is very
common in observational health studies and those who are  health-conscious
should
not be confounded by it.
     *   The known safety of vitamin and  nutrient supplements when taken at
appropriate doses was not taken into  account. The participants most likely
took a simple multivitamin tablet,  which contains low doses. Much higher
doses are also safe [4,7],  implying that the low doses in common
multivitamin tablets are very  safe. Further, because each individual requires
different amounts of  vitamins and nutrients, some people must take much higher
doses for best  health [8].
Summary: In an observational study of  older women in good health, it was
said that those who died were more  likely to have taken multivitamin and
nutrient supplements than those who  did not. The effect was small, and does
not indicate any reason for  disease or death. Instead, the study's methods
suggest that people who  have serious health conditions take vitamin and
mineral supplements  because they know that supplements can help. Indeed, the
study showed a  benefit from taking B-complex, C, D, and E vitamins, and
calcium and  magnesium. Therefore, if those wanting better health would take
appropriate doses of supplements regularly, they would likely continue to
achieve better health and longer life.

The on going disaster at Fukushima with the creation of a 12 mile exclusion
  zone around the reactors has given us even more reasons to close Indian
Point.  It is also important to look back at the exclusion zone surrounding
Chernobyl.  Reflect a moment on what an exclusion zone around Indian Point
would look like  and then pick up your phone and call an elected official and
ask them what they  are doing to close it down.

Hello alternative medicine friends!
 
This group had been nice and very informatively helpful eversince I joined here.
Does anybody have an idea about an alternative remedy for this baby's umbilical
granuloma? I want to read some ideas from you. I tried silver nitrate but it
didnt work well so I stopped. Until now there is still very small flesh inside
his belly button.
Can anybody help me how to eliminate this finally in a safe way?

remove fluoride from NYC water has resceduled  the press conference on the
bill to spring 2012.
The Fluoride Action Network has  prepared the analysis of the CDC report on
Alaskan Natives  cavities.
CDC Reveals Fluoridation Fails Alaskans  but Touts Fluoridation Anyway
New York –  October 19, 2011 – The US Centers for Disease Control (CDC)
reports that 91% of  rural Alaskan Native adolescents have cavities whether
their water is  fluoridated or not. (1) The CDC acknowledges that poor diets
and lack of dental  care are the probable culprits but, without evidence of
need, CDC is recklessly  recommending more fluoridation, reports the Fluoride
Action Network (FAN).
Fluoride, once believed to  reduce tooth decay through ingestion, is now
shown to act predominantly on the  surface of the teeth (CDC, 1999).
“This makes water  fluoridation out-dated and ineffective as this CDC
report proves,” says Paul  Connett, PhD, FAN’s Executive Director.
“Fluoridation
exposes Americans  unnecessarily to fluoride’s adverse effects, including
lowered IQ, thyroid  dysfunction and bone cancer.”
Tooth decay is  rampant in this CDC-studied rural low-income fluoridated
Alaskan Native (AN)  population - 67% of 4-5 year-olds; 73% of 6-8 year-olds;
68% of 9-11 year-olds  and 91% of 12-15 year-olds have cavities and much of
it is  untreated.
About 400 AN  children under 6-years-old required full-mouth restorations
including  extractions and extensive tooth decay repair requiring general
anesthesia,  costing an average of $6,000 per case, in 2007.
Dr. Brad  Whistler, Alaska state oral health director and a  co-author of
the study, said "When they smile, you see a lot of silver  teeth.”
Some kids get no  care at all. Up to 68% of children suffer with untreated
tooth decay.
After careful study, both the  city councils in Juneau and Fairbanks,
Alaska have stopped fluoridating their water supplies.
“This report by the  pro-fluoridation CDC Oral Health Branch is a somewhat
desperate attempt to stop  the inevitable crumbling of water fluoridation
throughout Alaska,” says Connett.” Rather than admit fluoride’s risks, 
the
CDC continues to serve the economic interests of the dental lobby rather
than the health of the American people,” says  Connett
Fluoride is in  virtually all processed foods and high in ocean fish. The
CDC failed to measure  these children’s total fluoride intake from food and
dental products but reports  “fluoridating village water systems likely would
decrease the prevalence and  severity of dental caries”
“That’s an  unscientific conclusion as well as illogical,” says Connett.
Additionally, 40%  of the villages lack piped water systems suitable for
fluoridation and  additional piped water systems need to be built.
“It’s clear that  these children urgently need dental care, not more
fluoride. Yet, the CDC offers  no remedy except, with no evidence, to put more
fluoride into malnourished  bodies while adding a financial burden to an
already very low-income region,”  says Connett.
In the 1920’s,  only 1% of the AN population had cavities. In the 1940’s,
air transportation  brought in processed food, gradually changing the AN
diet from fish and game to  a diet high in cavity-causing carbohydrates. By
2005, Âľ of AN kindergarteners  state-wide had cavities.
This current CDC  study reports that “soda pop consumption was associated
with an approximately  30% increased risk for caries in permanent teeth for
each soda pop consumed per  day.” Many sodas contain fluoride from  the water
used in processing, according to the USDA’s Fluoride in Foods  database.
“In many respects the CDC Oral Health  branch acts like an extension of the
American Dental Association (ADA) which  behaves more like a trade union
for dental interests than a bona fide  professional body. We think the CDC is
promoting fluoridation here because the  ADA won’t let them push the real
remedy – the hiring of more Dental Therapists  (DT) – which the ADA
vehemently opposes because DTs infringe upon dentists’  lucrative monopoly –
even
though few dentists will live or work in rural  Alaska,” says Connett
However,  public-health-dentists and the W. K. Kellogg Foundation support
and encourage  the creation of more Dental Therapists for the entire United
States.
Dr. Connett has presented more  arguments against fluoridation in the book
he co-authored, "The Case Against  Fluoride" (Chelsea Green, 2010).

How to Make People Believe Any  Anti-Vitamin Scare
It Just Takes  Lots of Pharmaceutical Industry Cash

product of pharmaceutical company payouts. No,  this is not one of "those"
conspiracy theories. Here's how it's done:
1) Cash to study authors.  Many of the authors of a recent negative vitamin
E paper (1) have received  substantial income from the pharmaceutical
industry. The names are  available in the last page of the paper (1556) in the
"Conflict of  Interest" section. You will not see them in the brief summary at
the JAMA  website. A number of the study authors have received money from
pharmaceutical companies, including Merck, Pfizer, Sanofi-Aventis,
AstraZeneca, Abbott, GlaxoSmithKline, Janssen, Amgen, Firmagon, and  Novartis.
2) Advertising revenue.  Many popular magazines and almost all major
medical journals receive  income from the pharmaceutical industry. The only
question is, how much?  Pick up a copy of the publication and count the
pharmaceutical ads. The  more space sold, the more revenue for the publication.
If you
try to find  their advertisement revenue, you'll see that they don't
disclose it. So,  just count the Pharma ads. Look in them all: Readers Digest

result, and by biasing the interpretation to show a  statistical increase in

4) Bias in what is published, or  rejected for publication. The largest and
most popular medical  journals receive very large income from
pharmaceutical advertising.  Peer-reviewed research indicates that this
influences what
they print, and  even what study authors conclude from their data.

     *   Antibiotics cause 700,000 emergency  room visits per year, just in

     *   Modern drug-and-cut medicine is at  least the third leading cause
of death in the USA. Some estimates place  medicine as the number one cause

     *   Over 1.5 million Americans are injured  every year by drug errors
in hospitals, doctors' offices, and nursing  homes. If in a hospital, a
patient can expect at least one medication  error every single day. (5)
     *   More than 100,000 patients die every  year, just in the US, from

Double Standard
Countless comedians have made fun of the  incompetent physician who, when
called late at night during a life-  threatening disease crisis, says, "take
two aspirin and call me in the  morning." It's no longer funny. One of the
largest pharmaceutical  conglomerates in the world ran prime- time national
television commercials  that declared: "Bayer aspirin may actually help stop
you from dying if you  take it during a heart attack." The company also

Daily Aspirin Use Linked With Pancreatic Cancer
Here's something you may have not seen.  Research has shown that women who
take just one aspirin a day, "which  millions do to prevent heart attack and
stroke as well as to treat  headaches - may raise their risk of getting
deadly pancreatic cancer. . .  . Pancreatic cancer affects only 31,000
Americans a year, but it kills  virtually all its victims within three years.
The
study of 88,000 nurses  found that those who took two or more aspirins a week
for 20 years or more  had a 58 percent higher risk of pancreatic cancer."
(7) Women who  took two or more aspirin tablets per day had an alarming 86
percent  greater risk of pancreatic cancer.
Study author Dr. Eva Schernhammer of  Harvard Medical School was quoted as
saying: "Apart from smoking, this is  one of the few risk factors that have
been identified for pancreatic  cancer. Initially we expected that aspirin
would protect against  pancreatic cancer."
How about that.
Say: What if there was one, just  one case of pancreatic cancer caused by a
vitamin? What  do you think the press would have said about that?
The fact is, vitamins are known to be  effective and safe. They are
essential nutrients, and when taken at the  proper doses over a lifetime, are
capable of preventing a wide variety of  diseases. Because drug companies can't
make big profits developing  essential nutrients, they have a vested interest
in agitating for the use  of drugs and disparaging the use of nutritional
supplements.

Food  for Thought








"The idea that Alzheimer's is entirely  genetic and unpreventable is
perhaps the greatest misconception about  the disease," says Gary Small, M.D.,
director of the UCLA Center on  Aging. Researchers now know that Alzheimer's,
like heart disease and  cancer, develops over decades and can be influenced
by lifestyle  factors including cholesterol, blood pressure, obesity,
depression,  education, nutrition, sleep and mental, physical and social
activity.The big news: Mountains of research reveals that simple  things you do
every
day might cut your odds of losing your mind to  Alzheimer's.In search of
scientific ways to delay and outlive  Alzheimer's and other dementias, I
tracked down thousands of studies  and interviewed dozens of experts. The
results
in a new book: 100  Simple Things You Can Do to Prevent Alzheimer's and
Age-Related Memory  Loss








Here are 10  strategies I found most surprising.





1. Have  coffee. In an amazing  flip-flop, coffee is the new brain tonic. A
large European study  showed that drinking three to five cups of coffee a
day in midlife cut  Alzheimer's risk 65% in late life. University of South
Florida  researcher Gary Arendash credits caffeine: He says it reduces
dementia-causing amyloid in animal brains. Others credit coffee's  antioxidants.
So drink up, Arendash advises, unless your doctor says  you shouldn't.





2. Floss. Oddly, the health of your teeth and gums can  help predict
dementia. University of Southern California research  found that having
periodontal disease before age 35 quadrupled the  odds of dementia years later.
Older
people with tooth and gum disease  score lower on memory and cognition
tests, other studies show. Experts  speculate that inflammation in diseased
mouths migrates to the  brain.





3. Google.  Doing an online search can  stimulate your aging brain even
more than reading a book, says UCLA's  Gary Small, who used brain MRIs to prove
it. The biggest surprise:  Novice Internet surfers, ages 55 to 78,
activated key memory and  learning centers in the brain after only a week of Web
surfing for an  hour a day.





4. Grow new brain  cells. Impossible,  scientists used to say. Now it's
believed that thousands of brain  cells are born daily. The trick is to keep
the newborns alive. What  works: aerobic exercise (such as a brisk 30-minute
walk every day),  strenuous mental activity, eating salmon and other fatty
fish, and  avoiding obesity, chronic stress, sleep deprivation, heavy drinking
  and vitamin B deficiency.





5. Drink apple  juice. Apple juice can push  production of the "memory
chemical" acetylcholine; that's the way the  popular Alzheimer's drug Aricept
works, says Thomas Shea, Ph.D., of  the University of Massachusetts. He was
surprised that old mice given  apple juice did better on learning and memory
tests than mice that  received water. A dose for humans: 16 ounces, or two to
three apples a  day.





6. Protect your head.  Blows to the head, even mild ones early in life,
increase odds of dementia years later. Pro football players have 19  times the
typical rate of memory-related diseases. Alzheimer's is four  times more
common in elderly who suffer a head injury, Columbia  University finds.
Accidental falls doubled an older person's odds of  dementia five years later in
another study. Wear seat belts and  helmets, fall-proof your house, and don't
take  risks.





7. Meditate.  Brain scans show that people who meditate  regularly have
less cognitive decline and brain shrinkage - a classic  sign of Alzheimer's -
as they age. Andrew Newberg of the University of  Pennsylvania School of
Medicine says yoga meditation of 12 minutes a  day for two months improved blood
flow and cognitive functioning in  seniors with memory problems.





8. Take Vitamin  D. A "severe deficiency" of  vitamin D boosts older
Americans' risk of cognitive impairment 394%,  an alarming study by England's
University of Exeter finds. And most  Americans lack vitamin D. Experts
recommend a daily dose of 800 IU to  2,000 IU of vitamin D3.





9. Fill your brain.  It's called "cognitive  reserve." A rich accumulation
of life experiences - education,  marriage, socializing, a stimulating job,
language skills, having a  purpose in life, physical activity and mentally
demanding leisure  activities - makes your brain better able to tolerate
plaques and  tangles. You can even have significant Alzheimer's pathology and no
  symptoms of dementia if you have high cognitive reserve, says David
Bennett, M.D., of Chicago's Rush University Medical  Center.





10. Avoid  infection. Astonishing new evidence ties Alzheimer's  to cold
sores, gastric ulcers, Lyme disease, pneumonia and the flu.  Ruth Itzhaki,
Ph.D., of the University of Manchester in England  estimates the cold-sore
herpes simplex virus is incriminated in 60% of  Alzheimer's cases. The theory:
Infections trigger excessive beta  amyloid "gunk" that kills brain cells.
Proof is still lacking, but why  not avoid common infections and take
appropriate vaccines, antibiotics  and antiviral agents?





What to Drink  for Good Memory





A great way to keep your aging memory  sharp and avoid Alzheimer's is to
drink the right  stuff.





a. Tops: Juice.  A glass of any fruit or vegetable juice three  times a
week slashed Alzheimer's odds 76% in Vanderbilt University  research.
Especially protective:blueberry, grape and apple juice, say  other studies.





b. Tea: Only a cup  of black or green tea a week cut rates of cognitive
decline in older  people by 37%, reports the Alzheimer's Association. Only
brewed tea  works. Skip bottled tea, which is devoid of  antioxidants.





c. Caffeine beverages.  Surprisingly, caffeine fights memory loss and
Alzheimer's, suggest dozens of studies. Best sources: coffee (one  Alzheimer's
researcher drinks five cups a day), tea and chocolate.  Beware caffeine if
you are pregnant, have high blood pressure,  insomnia or anxiety.





d. Red  wine: If you drink alcohol, a little red wine is most  apt to
benefit your aging brain. It's high in antioxidants. Limit it  to one daily
glass
for women, two for men. Excessive alcohol, notably  binge drinking, brings
on  Alzheimer's.





e. Two to  avoid: Sugary soft drinks, especially those sweetened  with high
fructose corn syrup. They make lab animals dumb. Water with  high copper
content also can up your odds of Alzheimer's. Use a water  filter that removes
excess minerals.








5 Ways to Save  Your Kids from Alzheimer's





Now,  Alzheimer's isn't just a disease  that starts in old age. What
happens to your child's brain seems to  have a dramatic impact on his or her
likelihood of Alzheimer's many  decades later.





Here are five things you can do now  to help save your child from
Alzheimer's and memory loss later in  life, according to the latest research.





1. Prevent head  blows: Insist your child wear a helmet during biking,
skating, skiing, baseball, football, hockey, and all contact sports. A  major
blow as well as tiny repetitive unnoticed concussions can cause  damage,
leading to memory loss and Alzheimer's years  later.





2 Encourage language  skills: A teenage girl who  is a superior writer is
eight times more likely to escape Alzheimer's  in late life than a teen with
poor linguistic skills. Teaching young  children to be fluent in two or more
languages makes them less  vulnerable to Alzheimer's.





3. Insist your child go  to college: Education is a  powerful Alzheimer's
deterrent . The more years of formal schooling,  the lower the odds. Most
Alzheimer's prone: teenage drop outs. For  each year of education, your risk of
dementia drops 11%, says a recent  University of Cambridge study.





4. Provide  stimulation:  Keep your child's brain busy  with physical,
mental and social activities and novel experiences. All  these contribute to a
bigger, better functioning brain with more  so-called 'cognitive reserve.'
High cognitive reserve protects against  memory decline and Alzheimer's.






5. Spare the junk  food: Lab animals raised on berries, spinach and high
omega-3 fish have great memories in old age. Those overfed sugar,  especially
high fructose in soft drinks, saturated fat and trans fats  become
overweight and diabetic, with smaller brains and impaired  memories as they age,
a
prelude to  Alzheimer's.

HOW GAS DRILLING THREATENS TO LOWER YOUR PROPERTY  VALUES

If you have a gas lease, your neighbor has a gas  lease or if you live in a
community that has a lot of gas leases, it is likely  that the value of
your property will decrease and it may become almost  impossible for you to
sell your home. This is because almost all banks and  insurance companies
consider gas-leased land to be an unacceptable risk and will  not give mortgages
on or refinance properties that are leased or have gas  wells.

Lenders such as the  FHA (Federal Housing Administration) and the
Department of HUD (Housing and  Urban Development) will not provide financing if
surface or sub surface gas  rights have been leased within 300 feet of a
residential structure OR within 300  feet of property boundary lines. This can
affect you if one or more of your  neighbors has leased, even if you haven’t,
and can also affect you if you are  subject to New York State’s compulsory
integration laws, which allow wells to be  drilled under your property if 60%
or more of the property adjacent to you has  gas leases.

Experts say that  the inability to get mortgages for pending residential
sales will eliminate as  much as 90% of potential purchases. This dynamic will
create a dramatic negative  impact on property values due to their lack of
marketability and therefore  demand. As real estate values decrease,
assessment rolls will be impacted and  ultimately the tax base. Some local
communities will likely have no choice but  to raise taxes to pay for the
shortfall.

Communities are already seeing a softening of  home sales as buyers are
holding off making any investment until the issue of  fracking is resolved.
Ulster County real estate brokers report that the  potential of hydrofracking
is hurting their important second-home buying  business. The permit
conditions and  regulations that the New York State DEC has released to govern
hydraulic  fracturing (the dSGEIS) makes little mention of how fracking will
devalue  property and lower tax assessments, nor does it provide any remedies to
those  affected. In fact Section 6.8.3.4 of the Document says about Propert
Values:
"At this level of  analysis, it is impossible to predict the actual impacts
of developing the  Marcellus and Utica shale natural gas reserves on
individual property values.  However, some predictions can be made with regard
to
the general impact of  mineral rights on property values and the impact of
well development on adjacent  properties.

Anti-Fluoride  Activists Square Off With Medical Community








A handful of activists who want  to remove fluoride from the public water
supply brought their case to the  Damariscotta and Newcastle Boards of
Selectmen Oct. 19 and 24.

The  anti-fluoride contingent testified in Damariscotta Oct. 19 without a
rebuttal  from the other side.

At the Newcastle meeting, however, four area  medical professionals warned
against removing fluoride from the water supply.

Damariscotta Health Officer Dr. Tim Goltz and Newcastle Health Officer  Dr.
John Dickens strongly advocated for continued fluoridation.

The  health officer is an official position appointed by the selectmen.

Goltz, a family physician with Lincoln Medical Partners, said it would  be
"a big mistake to take fluoride out of the water."

Goltz said he  isn't alone in his conviction. The American Academy of
Family Physicians, the  American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Dental
Association, the Center  for Disease Control, the U.S. Preventive Services Task
Force, the U.S. surgeon  general and the World Health Organization all
endorse community fluoridation,  he said.

The Center for Disease Control names fluoridation of drinking  water as one
of the 10 great public health achievements of the 20th century.

The anti-fluoride representatives generally acknowledge the benefits  of
the topical application of fluoride, while arguing against its ingestion.

Dickens, however, rebuffed this argument. "Constant exposure to a low
level of fluoride is good to prevent dental decay," he said. "The scientific
evidence is it's very beneficial in our communities."

Damariscotta  dentist Dr. Jim Olson said he has "seen tremendous change in
the 40 years I've  practiced. I believe fluoride is a major reason for
that."

"I believe  it is safe," Olson said. "I think taking it out would be a
tremendous  disservice to the community."

Bristol dentist Dr. Kerry Ransdell said  17 years practicing in Arizona
afforded him the opportunity to witness  firsthand the "astounding" increase in
tooth decay rates in non-fluoridated  communities.

Ransdell also  took exception to an argument by fluoride opponents that the
chemical mottles  the teeth of nearly half of teenagers.

"There are white spots on teeth that are  caused by other reasons,"
Ransdell said. "You cannot lay [every white spot] at  fluoride's feet."

Taking his cue from the other side, Ransdell  said "I agree, it's time to
reevaluate, but I think [fluoridation] needs to be  ringingly endorsed."

Damariscotta resident Amy Lalime led off  testimony for the opposition
during a pre-referendum public hearing in front  of the Damariscotta Board of
Selectmen Oct. 19

"My 12-year-old  daughter has fluorosis," Lalime said, referring to a
condition, the result of  excessive fluoride consumption, which causes spotting
of the teeth. "She  doesn't show her teeth when she smiles because she's very
self-conscious."

Lalime helped gather signatures to place the question on the Tues.,  Nov. 8
ballot.

"Fluoride is a poison. It's indisputable. It's labeled  on the bag that
goes into our water," Lalime said. "It's on your toothpaste  label."

Joyce Polyniak, a Damariscotta resident who said she's a  chemist, also
opposes the addition of fluoride to the water supply. "I don't  approve of
using people as guinea pigs," Polyniak said.

Polyniak also  expressed concern about the dangers of cell phone use.

Stephanie  Nelson, of Newcastle, which shares a water supply with
Damariscotta and will  also vote on the issue Nov. 8, posed a question to
residents
of the twin  villages who use well water.

"I want you to please consider your  neighbors that have to drink this
water every day," Nelson said. "How would  you feel being forced to take a
medication that you neither want nor need,  especially when there is mounting
evidence that fluoride does you  harm?"

"We all have the right to clean, safe water and for me that  means
fluoride-free water," Nelson said.

Damariscotta attorney Peter  Drum cited a series of studies pointing to the
ineffectiveness of ingesting  fluoride as a means to combat tooth decay.

"It's poison that's helpful  when applied topically but not when you ingest
it," Drum said.

"Fluoride can actually cause brain damage when it's ingested in water"  and
the chemical "seems to reduce IQ in kids," Drum said, again citing
multiple studies.

Drum and others posit that the chemical poses a wide  variety of health
risks, especially to specific demographics, including  infants, the elderly and
chemotherapy patients.

In Newcastle, Nelson,  Martha Frink, another gatherer of signatures for the
petition, and Cynthia  Thomas largely rehashed the same arguments.

Nelson objected to the  wording of the referendum.

The question asks "Shall fluoride be added  to the public water supply for
the intended purpose of reducing tooth decay?"

"This is a very slanted question, obviously, because we all want to  reduce
tooth decay in our community," Nelson said.

The Maine secretary  of state required wording identical to the original
ballot questions in  1969-1970, when the towns initially approved
fluoridation.

Damariscotta and Newcastle will go to the polls on Election Day,  Tues.,
Nov. 8. The fluoride vote, the sole question on the municipal ballot,
coincides with a statewide four-question  referendum.

THE  BOTTOM LINE



We have heard a lot of back  and forth about the value of adding fluoride
to the community's water supply  in the weeks leading up to the referendum
vote on the issue in Newcastle and  Damariscotta, Nov. 8

No doubt we will hear plenty more as the pre-vote  lobbying reaches a
crescendo in the coming days.

Fortunately, this is  an argument based on facts. However, there are
apparently enough facts  available in enough places to build a credible case on
either side of the  issue.

It says something that the local medical community is apparently  unanimous
in their support for added fluoride in the community water supply.  They
say the benefits speak for themselves and they have a 40-year track  record
backing them up.

The benefits of their collective expertise  should be given appropriate
weight.

However, we think it would be a  mistake to just blindly take their word
for it and dismiss out of hand the  concerns raised by those who brought the
issue to the fore.

Fluoride  opponents may not have as many doctors or dentists among their
ranks but  medical degrees are not required to do research or to draw an
informed  conclusion.

What research they have done and the evidence they do cite  does indicate
cause for concern.

As we do before every vote, we  encourage every voter to do their own
research and make up their own mind.  Don't just take the word of your local
doctor or dentist or anti- fluoride  advocate. They already have their opinion.

The bottom line is while the  sides may disagree on the methods, they agree
on the end goal, which is  protecting the public's health.

Join us for a teach-in/speak-out/rally on Sunday, October 30,  11am at
Occupy Wall  Street

For  over a month, protestors have been Occupying Wall Street in a protest
against corporate greed and  malfeasance. Their stand against corporate
greed has given inspiration and  hope to victims of the economic crisis that
another world is  possible.

On  October 12th, the labor movement mobilized its members  to stand in
solidarity with the Occupy Wall Street protestors and say, "This  fight is our
fight, too."

As  environmentalists, we know that the worst polluters and most trenchant
enemies of sustainability are the same corporations that are targeted by
the  Occupy Wall Street movement.

On Sunday, Oct. 30, 11am  we invite groups and individuals in the
environmental movement to  converge on Liberty Plaza to stand in solidarity with
the
occupiers against  the 1%, who are rapidly destroying our planet.

The fight for a  sustainable society begins with a fight against the status
quo of a system  addicted to oil, off-shore drilling, and trans-continental
  pipelines.
It begins with a fight against the system  which allows a nuclear power
plant to evade safety requirements, be built on  multiple fault lines, near 20
million people, and produce waste that will  cause areas of our planet to be
inhospitable for thousands of  years.

It begins with a fight against the system  that proposes pumping thousands
of gallons of fresh water and chemicals into  the ground to and permanently

New  York’s energy supply is secure and abundant even without  electricity
from Entergy’s Indian! Point nuclear reactors,  according to a new study
commissioned by Riverkeeper and its  partner, Natural Resources Defense Council
  (NRDC).

If  Indian Point’s reactors are shuttered in 2015, as we believe they
should be, New York will still have excess energy through  2020. By that time,
we
’ll have another 4,500 megawatts (two  Indian Points!) of energy
alternatives available to replace the  power Indian Point generates today. This
new
power will be cleaner,  far safer, and will ONLY cost the average home owner
between $1 - 5  per month.
This authoritative new  report undercuts Entergy’s longstanding argument
that New York needs  Indian Point’s power. Put simply, we don’t need  Indian
Point, and we can̵! 7;t afford the risk of an accident at a  nuclear plant
just 35 miles from Midtown  Manhattan.

A Remarkable Time


Dear  Friends,
The last few weeks have been  an amazing time with all that is happening
around Indian Point in Westchester and NYC. It is more than  any one person or
group can keep up with. It is a good thing that we are many  and growing!
Use what is here in any way that is helpful. When you share it with  others,
be sure to add your own local events.

This  calendar includes current events and chronicals what has happened
from September  to the present. It is long. Most people will not care to read
it all. Therefore it is in reverse order with forthcoming events first.
However,  it is good information to send to donors and elected officials so that
they can  see some of the concrete actions being taken to close Indian
Point. It could also be useful in reaching out to new people when fund raising.

Things  are happening faster than ever before. Congratulations to us all!
We are making  history. It is entirely possible that we will be able to look
back on this time  as a turning point in our struggle to close the reactors
at Indian Point and  make the Hudson River Valley clean and green.

Sunday, March 11,  2012: One year  after Fukushima a commemorative march
will be held in Washington, D.C. Plans are already being made for those who
stay local. One  idea is to have an Occupy movement for nuclear power plants
across the  nation. Another is to bring over a delegation from Fukushima,
including some of their first responders, to talk with our first responders
and  others involved in the evacuation plan. We may be able to plan multiple
activities around this date. Put it on your calendar now and think about
what  you can do.

Wednesday, December 7,  2011: The Japanese American  Association, 15 West
44th Street, 11th floor, presents a  panel discussion at 6pm with Kevin Kamps
of Beyond Nuclear and Gary Shaw of the  Indian Point Safe Energy Coalition.
The topic is What do you know  about nuclear power?

Sunday, November  20: Third Indian Point  Convergence and Teach In. In
response to the needs expressed by the  students who attended the last
Convergence, we have been invited to participate  in a teach in for students at
SUNY
Purchase. The teach in will run  from 1 to 3pm, the November Convergence
will follow. We need people for the 30  minute sessions of the teach in. Can
you speak with students about  various aspects of Indian Point, answer their
questions and end with some  concrete actions they can take? If you are

children in Japan  to be evacuated from contaminated areas. Contact

Tuesday, November 1: The election  is exactly one week away. This is the
last chance to make calls,  hand out flyers and talk to friends about voting
for candidates who want to  close Indian Point. We need to support elected
officials like Mike  Kaplowitz, head of the county environmental committee,
who has a deep  understanding of the issues surrounding Indian Point. John
Nona, Peter Harkins,  Judy Liars, and Bill Ryan have all taken strong positions
against Indian  Point. All are being targeted by  Entergy. They need our
help. It is crucial that we  don’t let them down. Mike Kaplowitz is looking
for 49 more people who will  commit to calling 50 people to help turn out the
vote. Call him  914-924-3404 to get phone numbers to call. If you can’t make
phone calls Mike  welcomes your help in giving out flyers. Even if you don’
t vote in his district  you can help Mike to the benefit of us all.

Sunday, October 30: Indian Point goes to  Occupy Wall Street. SDIPN has
taken the lead in reaching out to the  Occupy Wall Street movement and
informing people there about Indian Point. We are all invited to join them on
Sunday
at 2 pm. Take the  noon train from Croton and look for others in the second
car. Take  the shuttle at Grand Central and then the subway to Rector
Street. Zucotti Park is a two block walk from the station. Bring  food and
anything else you would like to share with those who are occupying the  park and
speaking up for the 99% of us. SDIPN plans to table at  Zucotti Park every
Thursday from 4 to 6pm. Join them when you can. Wear yellow  from this day
until November 5th to express no to nuclear  power.
