Flu, Viruses, and Vitamin C Megadoses: A Personal Statement

(OMNS, November 17, 2009) Like most Americans, throughout most of my  life
I have occasionally been down with a virus. But for a long time, a  simple
cold for me started as a headache, sore throat and congestion in my  nasal
passages, and typically progressed to prolonged infection in my  lungs, and a
terrible cough. The whole experience took up to two weeks for  recovery from
the virus, and several more weeks for my lungs to  recover.
In his book Vitamin C and the Common Cold (1), Linus Pauling  explained
that vitamin C, taken at the proper dose, can prevent a virus  from taking hold
in the body. This pioneering book, written back in 1970,  was ignored by
many doctors but was well-received by the public. One  chemistry professor
told me that he had heard of Pauling's book and the  vitamin C therapy but
didn't think taking a big dose of an acid, even a  mild one like ascorbic acid,
would be good for the body. As for me, I  imagined Pauling was probably
correct about the details he had researched,  because he was a renowned
scientist and knew much more than most about  biochemistry. Perhaps, I thought,
he
had simply gotten some of the medical  details wrong or had missed some of
the important studies about the  effects of vitamins. But I started taking
1,000 mg of vitamin C every day  and kept this up for several decades.
Two years ago, I decided to look further for myself. I looked online  and
found a recent book by Hickey and Roberts (2) that summarized 60 years  of
vitamin C research and revisited the issue of Dr. Pauling's rejection  by the
medical establishment. Pauling and a few brave physicians had  continued
research into the use of vitamin C to prevent illness and had  gained a lot of
new knowledge and intuition about its use. The book  explained that all of
the studies showing little effect of vitamin C had  serious flaws. It also
carefully debunked the myths about hazards of  vitamin C use. I also read
Pauling's newer book on vitamin therapy, How  to Live Longer and Feel Better
(3), and was amazed at his clear  explanation of individual differences in the
need for essential nutrients.  Pauling had been right all along, and now
there was a lot of new knowledge  about how to use vitamin C for best benefit.
Next, I found a book by  Thomas Levy on the use of vitamin C to cure
infectious disease. (4) All of  these books contained numerous references to the
scientific  literature.
So I started taking 2,000-3,000 milligrams of vitamin C every few  hours,
and more when I went to bed at night. This caused no discomfort  and only
occasionally produced a minor laxative effect from vitamin C that  was
unabsorbed. Then, if I ever got an infection, I followed Dr. Robert  Cathcart's
instructions about going to "bowel tolerance" of vitamin C. (5)  Usually when I
get a cold or the flu there is an initial period of several  hours when I
feel tired, with a slight headache, sometimes with a slight  sore throat or
sniffle. As the books described, I could stop the symptoms  of the oncoming
infection within an hour or two by taking a higher dose of  vitamin C at
shorter intervals (3,000-5,000 milligrams every 20  minutes). Did it work? Well,
that first year I didn't get any colds or  flu, though in previous years I
usually had 2-3 colds.
Continuing to read about vitamin C and its effects, I read the new  Hickey
and Saul (6) book. The authors presented a very clear rationale for
ingesting vitamin C at a high level to bowel tolerance. Normally, the body  does
not take up vitamin C from the gut very efficiently at high doses.  However,
when the body is stressed with bacteria, viruses, or toxins, the  need for
vitamin C goes up tremendously, and the gut absorbs  proportionately more.
Now, after two years of taking high doses of vitamin C whenever I feel
symptoms of a cold or flu, I haven't had any colds or flu. I have found,
exactly as Hickey and Saul report, that it is possible to feel the  symptoms wax
and wane in one's body in inverse proportion to the dose that  one takes
throughout the day. This is a helpful scientific observation  that anyone can
verify whenever one treats a cold or influenza with  vitamin C. Although in
previous years I typically got a secondary  bacterial infection in my lungs,
requiring antibiotics and another two  weeks for recovery beyond the
duration of the cold, now with my vitamin C  therapy I simply don't get a cough
at
all, much less a prolonged bacterial  infection. From this experience, it is
obvious to me that vitamin C helps  to strengthen the immune response.
It is also now obvious to me that all the years I had been taking 1,000
mg/day and continued to get two or three colds, the amount was simply not
enough. I ride my bicycle in to work throughout the year, even when it is
freezing cold in the winter, and this puts a severe stress on my lungs.  The
books I've read explain that any severe stress, for example, a  low-grade
bacterial infection, or an injury, increases the body's need for  an
anti-oxidant, and lowers the level of vitamin C in the blood.  Although 1,000
milligrams
of vitamin C per day does some good, it  simply is not enough to suffice
for the body's needs when an infection  comes on.
Most animal species make in the neighborhood of 5,000-10,000 mg/day of
vitamin C in their own bodies; this is the norm for all mammals except
primates, some fruit eating bats, and guinea pigs. And it is known that  during
times of stress or illness, the majority of animal species  dramatically
increase their need and production of vitamin C. We humans  can respond to this
increased need by taking mega-doses of vitamin C when  we start to feel a
virus taking hold. When we do so, our bodies will be  able to fight it off more
readily.
Every year there are a few reports ostensibly showing some problem with
mega-doses of vitamin C. But after close scrutiny none have held true, and
the Hickey and Saul book explains why very clearly. Every individual
2,000-3,000 milligram dose I take allows my body, according to Hickey's  dynamic
flow model, to eliminate any excess after the vitamin performs its  function.
No heartburn, sometimes a little gas, very little laxative  effect, and this
is reduced by lower doses. For me, this is a small price  to pay for not
having several prolonged three- to four-week periods per  year during which I'm
essentially out of operation with congestion and a  terrible cough. If
everyone could read the Pauling, Levy and Hickey and  Saul books, I imagine we'd
have a lot less illness in our country. Does  this mean that we could stop
the current flu epidemic with vitamin C? I  suspect that if clinics around
the country could make the facts known  about vitamin C and give some simple
instructions about its use, then yes,  this could be accomplished. That is,
if we take large enough doses.

Dear Supporter,
This Wednesday, November 18th, the U.S.  Senate plans to consider a massive
"food safety" bill entitled "The FDA Food  Safety Modernization Act".
This bill (S. 510) will strengthen the  forces that for the past fifty
years have led to unsafe, nutritionally  compromised food and will undermine
growing efforts working to thwart those  forces. (To read the bill and view

U.S. Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis said,  "Experience should teach
us to be most on our guard to protect liberty when  the government's purposes
are beneficial". The Senate's food safety  initiative, though intended to
be beneficial, follows the House version  by leading food down the Food and
Drug Administration (FDA) "modernization" path  that Congress designed for
drugs. (This House version, H.R. 2749, has the same  drawbacks and originally
failed; later in the same week it was passed under  different rules).

The FDA's drug modernization approach places  high-cost drugs at the heart
of a dangerously costly health system, contributes  to thousands of
drug-related deaths, and leads to the approval of many unsafe  drugs that end up
being recalled. It also makes FDA drug regulation perilously  dependent on the
financial support the agency receives from drug company  fees.
S. 510 - in keeping with this flawed drug  modernization path - gives
powerful incentives to large, concentrated food  manufacturers (the sources of
the most significant threats to our food so far)  while undercutting producers
that are smaller, safer, and often local.
_Today Citizens for Health  launches its food safety campaign and our first
goal is to amend or defeat S  510. If the bill passes without any
meaningful, substantive changes, we will  seek a Presidential Veto. If the bill
that
is finally signed fails to address  our concerns sufficiently we will work
to establish and implement regulations to  minimize the negative impact on
food safety that will surely result, and we will  redouble our efforts to
maximize the food choices and food and health  information available to all.
And, remember: we are not  opposing food safety. We are working to advance
it by opposing  misguided attempts to build a flawed, drug-like bureaucratic
structure on top of  a crumbling food safety foundation that desperately
needs to be shored up and  repaired.

Indian Point puts public  health at grave risk

A major  battle over the future of New York's energy policy is being fought
at Indian  Point, 75 miles south of Albany. The battle is not just about
energy, but public  health.

Indian  Point is the site of two large nuclear reactors operating since the
mid-1970s.  Because Indian Point's federal licenses will expire in several
years, Entergy  Nuclear of Jackson, Miss., which owns the reactors, has
asked federal regulators  to extend them for another 20 years.
The  proposal has drawn fire from New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo,
and from  environmental groups. A total of 10 organizations have filed legal
papers  opposing the 20-year extension. If they are successful, Indian Point
will close  permanently.
But if  they do not succeed, Indian Point will continue to operate for a
long time. And  there will be serious threats to public health.
The  most ominous threat is that of a meltdown. Indian Point stores nuclear
waste in  deep pools of constantly cooled water, equal to hundreds of
Hiroshima bombs.  Loss of cooling water, from sabotage or accident, would heat
this waste to  dangerous levels, causing a release into the environment. In an
area where 21  million people live within 50 miles of the plant, safe
evacuation would be  impossible, and many thousands would suffer from acute
radiation poisoning or  cancer.
Aging  and corroding reactor parts make the chances of another Chernobyl
more possible.  A recent report found five near miss meltdowns from mechanical
problems at  Indian Point from 1999-2004 – the fourth most of any U.S.
nuclear plant. And a  terrorist act against a nuclear plant remains a constant
threat. On 9/11, one of  the hijacked planes flew directly over Indian Point
on its way to the World  Trade Center.
But a  meltdown may not be needed for Indian Point to harm the people who
live near it.  Like all reactors, they must routinely release some of the
radioactive and  cancer-causing chemicals they generate into local air and
water. There are more  than 100 such chemicals, including Strontium-90,
Iodine-131, and Cesium-137 --  the same as in fallout after atomic bomb tests
years
ago.
The  three New York counties with the highest rates of thyroid cancer --
Rockland,  Putnam and Orange -- all are situated within 20 miles of Indian
Point. Particles  of radioactive iodine, created only in bomb tests and
reactors, attack the  thyroid gland, leading to cancer. Scientists have found a
high risk of thyroid  cancer after exposure to the Hiroshima/Nagasaki bombs,
Chernobyl accident and  Nevada atomic bomb tests. There are no other known
causes of thyroid cancer.
Any  decision on the future of Indian Point should be based not just on
energy needs  and costs, but on public health interests. Decades after being
introduced,  nuclear power still poses health risks. Future risks are even
greater, since  reactors are aging and huge amounts of waste are building up. A
sound energy  policy should focus on safe sources, such as wind and solar
power. Federal  regulators should not allow a threat to the health of
millions to operate for 20  more years.

Actually the treatment for many mental health or psychiatric diseases have

National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) the US Government agency funding
research on this topic,  the symptoms of schizophrenia include
hallucinations,delusions,disordered thinking, movement disorders,flat
effect(personality), social withdrawal and cognitive defects. The NMH lists 
symptoms of
Depression as persistent sad, anxious or 'empty' mood, feelings  of
hopelessness, pessimism, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness, 
fatigue being
slowed down, difficulty remembering, or making decisions.

Then when you look up the symptoms of Beriberi, the classical Vitamin  B1
deficiency disease it on Medline Plus it lists loss of sensation in  hands
and feet, potential brain damage Later symptoms are mental confusion  and
speech difficulties.
When you look up the symptoms of Pellagra, the classical vitamin B3
(niacin) deficiency it includes mental confusion and delusions and scaly  skin.
Isn't there an overlap there? It is no surprise that these B Complex

There are  frequent, sudden deaths occurring in the military due to its
policy of reckless,  anti-scientific, psychiatric drug, polypharmacy.   I say
  "anti-scientific" because, in psychiatry, there are no actual physical
abnormalities/diseases to make normal (e.g., insulin in diabetes,
chemotherapy in cancer, antibiotics for  infections)--only diabolically crafted,
‘big
lie’ illusions of  diseases.  Although antipsychotics (Ray, et al, 2009),
antidepressants  (Whang, et al, 2009) and psychostimulants/amphetamines (Gould,
et al, 2009).)  have been proved to increase the risk of sudden cardiac
death, they are  routinely prescribed together, as if no such risk was  known.

While Surgeon  General of the Army Eric B. Schoomaker acknowledged a
"series, a sequence"  of deaths, in a February 7, 2008, Chicago Tribune
interview,
there has been no  explanation of these deaths--only continued references
to "suicides" and  "accidental drug overdoses" --always adding that illegal
drugs and  substances were also involved.
Stan  White (father of deceased veteran Andrew White) and I have "Googled"
over a  hundred such military deaths.  Young men in their twenties do  not
suddenly die for no reason at all, to be "found" "in their barracks,"  “at
their workstations," or “in their beds,"  but never,  beforehand, seen
semi-comatose, comatose, and never resuscitated, never making  it to a hospital
or
ICU, and never surviving--all of which are common with the  more usual
central nervous system depressant drug overdose.  In  Atypical antyipsychotic
drugs and the risk of Sudden Cardiac Death, Ray  et al, NEJM 2009;360:225-35,
wrote:   “The study end point was SCD (sudden cardiac death) occurring in the
  community.  SCD was defined as a  sudden pulseless condition that was
fatal, that was consistent with a  ventricular tachyarrhythmia, and that
occurred in the absence of a known  noncardiac condition as the proximate cause
of
death. The end point excluded  deaths of patients who had been admitted to
the hospital, deaths that were not  sudden, and deaths for which there was
evidence of an extrinsic cause (e.g.,  drug overdose), a non-cardiac cause
(e.g., pneumonia), or a cardiac cause that  was not consistent with a
ventricular tachyarrhythmia (e.g., heart  failure).”
It is  time for the truth about these deaths from the Surgeon General of
the Army and  from the House and Senate Veterans Affairs Committees.
It is  time for an end to the for-profit, anti-scientific, psychiatric
drugging, not  just of the US military, but of the US public-at-large—the
greatest health care  fraud in history.  Either the House,  the Senate and White
House find the will to say "no" to Big Pharma or we will  all become,
drugged, dependent, zombies.

The  World Health Organization, which has been predicting a massive  swine
flu pandemic that will infect one-third of the entire  world's population,
has every reason to be 100% certain of  its prediction. It's because...

...the swine flu virus is  about to be deliberately unleashed upon the
unsuspecting  public.

If you find this hard to believe, here's  proof:

A medical journalist named Jane Burgermeister  has recently filed criminal
charges with the FBI against the World  Health Organization (WHO), the
United Nations (UN), and several of  the highest ranking government and
corporate
officials concerning  their attempts to commit mass murder via the swine

This comes in the wake of charges filed last  April against US-based
pharmaceutical company, Baxter AG, and Avir  Green Hills Biotechnology. Baxter

last December, Baxter  inserted deadly live avian flu viruses into vaccines
that  were distributed to 18 countries around the world to
be  injected into patients as "flu shots" -- allegedly as a deliberate  act
to trigger a pandemic and profit from the sale of vaccines.

However, a batch of the tainted vaccines was first tested  on ferrets in
the Czech Republic before being shipped out for  injection into humans. Every
one of the ferrets died -- and  the SHOCKING discovery was made.

Since  the contamination of the vaccination couldn't be blamed on an
"honest mistake," newspapers immediately questioned whether the  events were
part
of a conspiracy to deliberately provoke a  pandemic, following up on
accusations already made by health  officials in other countries.

Jane Burgermeister contends  that the WHO, the UN and high-ranking
corporate government  officials conspired with each other (and others) in a
covert
international program involving the pharmaceutical companies  Baxter and
Novartis.

The conspiracy entailed the  bioengineering and then releasing of lethal
biological agents --  specifically the "bird flu" virus and the "swine flu
virus" in  order to accelerate the pandemic by making the virus ever more
virulent(with the addition of the Avian flu). This would then make  an otherwise
mild swine flu outbreak disastrous enough tojustifyforced  mass
vaccinations.

Such a forced mass vaccination  program would rake in billions of dollars
in vaccine revenues --  while the hoards of people who are vaccinated run the
risk of  suffering serious injury or even death in massive numbers!

Can  you REALLY be forced to take the swine flu  vaccine?

Most people have never heard of  the international health regulations and
the national pandemic  plans that ALLOW mandatory flu vaccinations. Most
people think  that no one can be FORCED to take the swine flu vaccine.  Wrong!

Did you know ... that in the event of a  Pandemic Level 6 emergency
declaration, you would be required to  follow the orders of the World Health
Organization? In such an  emergency, the WHO has the authority to force anyone
(and that  includes you) to be vaccinated and also to be  quarantined.

Under such circumstances, it would be a  CRIMINAL OFFENSE if you refuse to
be  vaccinated.

So  what's the worst thing that could happen if you were to be  vaccinated?

For starters, if the vaccine you  receive happens to be laced with live
avian flu viruses, which  Baxter has demonstrated itself capable of doing
without  being penalized-- the vaccine would be virulent enough to kill  you.

This is the basis for Burgermeister's charges against  the WHO and UN for
conspiracy to commit mass  murder.

Furthermore, if the swine flu vaccine doesn't kill  you, you may have an
increased CANCER RISK.

According to  German lung specialist Wolfgang Wodarg (who is also the
chairman  of the health committee in the German parliament and European
Council), the swine flu vaccine's nutrient solution contains  CANCEROUS cells
from
animals. It therefore stands to reason that  injection  of the vaccine might
also cause cancer in  humans.

The swine flu vaccine containsshockingly higher  concentrations of squalene
than was used in the anthrax vaccines,  which caused hundreds of thousands
of troops to suffer the  catastrophic effects of Gulf War Syndrome.

Furthermore, the  swine flu vaccine, which is being rushed to market

unnumbered, it is called the  ''Clean Energy Jobs and American Power Act."

The  response from nuclear power fanatics was  swift:

"When asked by Reuters if he could support  the Democrats' bill Senator
John McCain said: "Of course not.  Never, never, never." McCain complained that
the Democratic  bill merely paid lip-service to the nuclear power
industry."

McCain and his pals, like Lamar  Alexander (R-TN), will try to lard the
bill with billions of  dollars in taxpayer subsidies for new nuclear power-and
then  they're going to vote against any bill addressing climate  change
anyway.

That's the kind of attitude we're all  going to have to fight the rest of
this year. And we're  going to be seeing the same kinds of lies and deceit,
exaggeration, and corporate deception that characterized the  health care
issue all summer. Except in this case, it will be  on behalf of dirty energy
like nuclear power and  coal.

As  Sen. Boxer announced a couple of weeks ago, the bill contains  a
nuclear title aimed at garnering support from some  "moderate" Senators. But if
the reaction from McCain is any  indication, they needn't have bothered. And,
of course, there  shouldn't be a nuclear title in a climate bill at all. In
any  case, it provides support for job training programs for  nuclear
workers; requires DOE to start a new research program  on reactor
aging--dangerously suggesting that DOE should help  find ways to extend reactor
licenses
beyond 60 years; and  authorizes an unspecified amount of money for research
and  development of radioactive waste technologies--including  reprocessing.

For those following along, the nuclear  title runs from pages 111 to 119 of
the bill.

Thank  you to all of those of you from California and  Massachusetts who
called Sens. Boxer's and Kerry's offices  yesterday. Your efforts succeeded in
making some 11th-hour  changes to the text. For example, nuclear power is
no longer  falsely described as a carbon-free energy source, as was the  case
in earlier drafts. There is no longer an assertion that  renewables cannot
be baseload energy sources. And,  importantly, the NRC has been removed from
a promotional role  with DOE in the research program on reactor  aging.

And thank you to everyone who has donated  to NIRS recently, both online

Dear Dr Manmohan Singh, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India:
 
I write to you to raise a matter of the greatest importance to our health,
environment and the state of our world – Genetically Modified (GM) foods/crops
in general and Bt Brinjal in particular. Given that thousands of citizens of
this country including eminent scientists like Dr Pushpa Bhargava have already
written to you expressing their strong concerns on this matter, I believe that
you would respond to my urgent concern. Your kind self might be aware that on
October 14th 2009, the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC) has hastily
cleared for commercial use the first GM food crop, Bt Brinjal, in a closed-door
manner and without sound scientific evidence to prove its safety. Bt Brinjal, if
approved, would become the first ever such GM vegetable crop with the toxic Bt
gene in it, anywhere in the world, to be eaten more or less directly.
There is overwhelming scientific evidence that the process of Genetic
Engineering alters the nature of our food in unpredictable and irreversible
ways. During animal studies including ones conducted by GM companies themselves,
evidence linked GM food with infertility, organ and tissue damage, adverse
effects on growth and development, decreased immunity and even ill effects on
children. The nutritional composition of foods is also known to have changed.
Despite such evidence and despite the fact that a majority of countries in the
world do not allow/grow GM crops/foods, Bt Brinjal has been cleared by our
regulators and now awaits the decision of your government. The bio-safety of Bt
Brinjal is questionable and there is no independent research to prove its
safety. Independent analyses of the crop developer’s data has shown that it is
unsafe for human consumption, animal feed or for a release into the environment,
concerns the Expert Committee of the GEAC has refused to adequately and
scientifically address. They disregarded the fact that we are the Centre of
Origin/Diversity for Brinjal and no GM crop has hitherto been allowed in its
Centre of Origin/Diversity anywhere.
What is more, there is also enormous positive evidence on the ground of viable
ecological alternatives where neither chemical pesticides nor GM seeds are
needed for pest management in farming. The question about the very need for GM
crops/foods is therefore unanswered even as many GM seeds are being developed.
You have the power and responsibility, as the head of the Union Cabinet, to
prevent an irreversible health and environmental catastrophe by stopping Bt
Brinjal and disallowing GMOs in our food & farming and through the promotion of
sustainable agricultural technologies. You can do, if you choose to, what is
right for the millions who have vested their trust in your chair. Mr Prime
Minister, do not test this technology on me. I AM NO LAB RAT and I refuse to eat
Bt Brinjal and any other GM food. If Bt Brinjal is allowed, my right to choose
what I eat and my right to safe food will be violated forever. Further, farmers
will be entrapped into perpetual dependency on profit-hungry corporations, even
as farming becomes unviable with ever-increasing cost of cultivation. I
therefore urge you to disallow Bt Brinjal from entering my plate and the fields
of Indian farmers.

Dear Sir,
Please accept my Namaskar!
I am Mrs. Jyotirmayee Sarangi from Bhubaneswar,Orissa. I have a child of seven
years. We are a family of three members. My parents stay nearby. 
Since the past few months I have been reading in the papers about what is being
termed as Genetically Engineered (GE) foods. At first I thought it was a good
thing. If science can feed the world through innovative techniques there can be
nothing better than that. Later when I read that this would be done by taking
genes from bacteria, animals and even human beings, I began to have my doubts. 
Someone in my group sent me a mail about Bt Brinjal that will be shortly
approved it seems. This Bt Brinjal will contain genes of bacteria. This will
make the whole plant poisonous. Insects will eat the stem and fruits and die.
There will be less spraying of pesticides. This means the fruit will be
poisonous from the inside! What will happen if human beings eat this poisonous
fruit? 
The mailed article said that Bt Cotton has been engineered similarly. Thousands
of goats, sheep, cows, and buffaloes have eaten its straw and died very painful
deaths. 
I am extremely worried. Can I serve such food to my family or should I stop
buying brinjal altogether? What will happen when we have to eat outside? When I
have to visit friends and relatives? Or should I write to everyone not to
purchase and cook brinjal? What about my parents, will they agree to have such
food?
We are strict vegetarians. Will the introduction of genes from bacteria and
other species into our and vegetables still keep them vegetarian?
I have also heard my friends expressing the same fear and concern.  It seems
other native brinjal varieties as well as tomato and chilli will be polluted by
the poison.  Brinjal has many medicinal properties and we use it as a home
remedy, particularly for diabetes type B. Will the properties remain intact? 
Independent Scientists say animal experiments have proven that such food is
extremely dangerous for our health! It is reported that rats and mice fed this
food have had underdeveloped organs and bodies, bleeding stomach ulcers, damaged
liver and kidneys, intestines, damaged immune system, and also develop tendency
to abort dead little ones, litters dying after birth. The rats and mice also
developed sterility. All this is unbearable to a mother. 
The moot question is why are we being experimented upon like this? Already our
bodies are full of toxic pesticides and other poisons that have entered the food
chain.  Why add an unpredictable toxin on top of all such poisons? I being a
strict vegetarian cannot even think of having such food.
I hope now you understand my concerns as a parent and as a family person. I
would like to request you and your Cabinet not to allow this crop to be
cultivated in India. I would like to get your response within 10 days in spite
of your busy schedule. Meantime I will also be interacting with hundreds of
mothers in the school of my child.

Drug Makers Are Advocacy Group’s  Biggest Donors

WASHINGTON — A majority of the donations made to the _National Alliance on
Mental Illness_ (http://www.nami.org/) , one of the nation’s most
influential disease advocacy groups, have  come from drug makers in recent
years, acco
rding to Congressional  investigators.
The alliance, known as NAMI, has long been criticized for  coordinating
some of its lobbying efforts with drug makers and for pushing  legislation that
also benefits industry.
Last spring, Senator _Charles E. Grassley_

,  Republican of Iowa, sent letters to the alliance and about a dozen other
influential disease and patient advocacy organizations asking about their
ties  to drug and device makers. The request was part of his investigation
into the  drug industry’s influence on the practice of medicine.
The _mental health_

er)  alliance,  which is hugely influential in many state capitols, has
refused for years to  disclose specifics of its fund-raising, saying the
details were  private.
But according to investigators in Mr. Grassley’s office and  documents
obtained by The New York Times, drug makers from 2006 to 2008  contributed
nearly $23 million to the alliance, about three-quarters of its  donations.
Even the group’s executive director, Michael Fitzpatrick,  said in an
interview that the drug companies’ donations were excessive and that  things
would change.
“For at least the years of ’07, ’08 and ’09, the percentage  of money
from pharma has been higher than we have wanted it to be,” Mr.  Fitzpatrick
said.
He promised that the industry’s share of the organization’s  fund-raising
would drop “significantly” next year.
“I understand that NAMI gets painted as being in the pockets  of
pharmaceutical companies, and somehow that all we care about is

said. “It’s simply not true.”
Mr. Fitzpatrick said Mr. Grassley’s scrutiny, which he  described as
understandable given the attention paid to potential conflicts of  interest in
medicine, had led his organization to begin posting on its Web site  the names
of companies that donate $5,000 or more. And he predicted that other
patient and disease advocacy groups would be prodded by Mr. Grassley’s
investigation to do the same.
“Everyone I talk to wants to have more balanced  fund-raising,” Mr.
Fitzpatrick said.
In a statement, Mr. Grassley praised the alliance for its  disclosures. “It’
d be good for the system for other patient groups to do what  NAMI has done,
” he said.
Mr. Grassley’s scrutiny has been unnerving for patient and  disease
advocacy groups, which are often filled with sincere people who are  either
afflicted with serious illnesses themselves or have family members who  have
been
affected. Many join the groups in the hope of making sense of their
misfortune by helping to find a cure or raising awareness of a disease’s risks
and
frequency.
Drug makers are natural allies in these pursuits since cures  may come out
of corporate laboratories and the industry’s money can help finance  public
service campaigns and fund-raising dinners. But industry critics have  long
derided some patient organizations as little more than front groups devoted
to lobbying on issues that affect industry profits, and few have come under
more  scrutiny for industry ties than the mental health alliance.
For years, the alliance has fought states’ legislative  efforts to limit
doctors’ freedom to prescribe drugs, no matter how expensive,  to treat mental
illness in patients who rely on government health care programs  like

routinely top the list of the most expensive drugs that states buy for
their poorest patients.
Mr. Fitzpatrick defended these lobbying efforts, saying they  were just one
of many the organization routinely undertook.
The close ties between the alliance and drug makers were on  stark display
last week, when the organization held its annual gala at the  Andrew W.
Mellon Auditorium on Constitution Avenue in Washington. Tickets were  $300 each.
Before a dinner of roasted red bell pepper soup, beef tenderloin and
tilapia, Dr. Stephen H. Feinstein, president of the alliance’s board, thanked
Bristol-Myers Squibb, the pharmaceutical company.
“For the past five years, Bristol-Myers has sponsored this  dinner at the
highest level,” Dr. Feinstein said.
He then introduced Dr. Fred Grossman, chief of neuroscience  research at
Bristol-Myers, who told the audience that “now, more than ever, our  enduring
relationship with NAMI must remain strong.”
Documents obtained by The New York Times show that drug  makers have over
the years given the mental health alliance — along with  millions of dollars
in donations — direct advice about how to advocate  forcefully for issues
that affect industry profits. The documents show, for  example, that the
alliance’s leaders, including Mr. Fitzpatrick, met with  AstraZeneca sales
executives on Dec. 16, 2003.
Slides from a presentation delivered by the salesmen show  that the company
urged the alliance to resist state efforts to limit access to  mental
health drugs.
“Solutions: Play Hard Ball,” one slide was titled. “Hold  policy makers
accountable for their decisions in media and in election,” it  continued.
The alliance’s own slides concluded by saying, “We  appreciate
AstraZeneca’
s strong support of NAMI.”
Mr. Fitzpatrick said that the alliance frequently had such  meetings and
that the organization would fight for better access to mental  health drugs “
even if we had no relationship with pharmaceutical  companies.”
Tony Jewell, an AstraZeneca spokesman, said that the company  was “

Hospital Review and Planning Council, issued a regulation ordering health  care
workers to be vaccinated by Nov. 30 or face fines.

Questions about safety and claims of personal preference are
understandable. Given the outstanding efficacy and safety record of approved 
influenza
vaccines, our overriding concern then, as health care workers,  should be the
interests of our patients, not our own sensibilities about  mandates. On
this, the facts are very clear: the welfare of patients is,  without any
doubt, best served by the very high rates of staff immunity that  can only be
achieved with mandatory influenza vaccination – not the 40-50  percent rates
of
staff immunization historically achieved with even the most  vigorous of
voluntary programs. Under voluntary standards, institutional  outbreaks occur
every flu season. Medical literature convincingly demonstrates  that high
levels of staff immunity confer protection on those patients who  cannot be or
have not been effectively vaccinated themselves, while also  allowing the
institution to remain more fully staffed.

lawyer for three nurses who sued  the state, asserting that the order violated
their civil rights, said the  judge’s ruling was a victory. New York was the
only state in the country to  mandate vaccinations for health care workers,
he said.
The nurses — Lorna  Patterson, Kathryn Dupuis and Stephanie Goertz — work
in the emergency room at  _Albany Medical Center_ (http://www.amc.edu/) , a
regional trauma unit.
“These are not libertarians, they are not lefties, they are not right-wing
lunatics,” Mr. Kindlon said of his clients in a phone interview on Friday. “
They  are health care professionals, and they think the vaccination is not
going to be  good for them. They have no confidence that either the seasonal
flu vaccine or  H1N1 vaccine is going to do any good for them.”
Justice McNamara  consolidated the nurses’ suit with two other lawsuits,
brought by the _New York State Public Employees Federation_

, which also  challenged the regulation.
Mr. Kindlon said of his clients: “They basically  were being
administratively ambushed. This regulation came out of the Health  Department
during the
dog days of August. People weren’t aware of it until  September. Then they
were suddenly advised that the drop-dead rate for receiving  the vaccination
from the state was Nov. 30.”
The hospital imposed its own  deadline — mid-October — for vaccinations
for its employees, Mr. Kindlon said.
The state is all but certain to fight the lawsuits and seek enforcement of
the mandate. At a legislative hearing on Tuesday, Dr. Guthrie Birkhead, a
state  deputy health commissioner, _defended the mandate_

) , saying,  “Health care settings are no different than any other setting
where vaccination  is the most effective method of preventing influenza.”
The issue of  mandatory vaccinations has divided health care workers and

, for example, has  been monitoring the situation but not taken an official
position against the  requirement.
The Public Employees Federation, which has about 5,000 members  covered by
the regulations, said it encouraged its members to be vaccinated  against
the flu but opposed making the vaccine a condition of  employment.
Patricia Finn, a lawyer for Suzanne Field, a nurse from  Poughkeepsie,
N.Y., who has filed a lawsuit in State Supreme Court in Manhattan  challenging
the mandatory vaccinations, said on Friday that her case would  proceed
despite the Albany restraining order, but added about the temporary  restraining
order:

We’re absolutely thrilled about it. I’m very pleased that the  whole
process has been slowed down. That’s what we’re so concerned about, the 
process
of vaccinating. It’s not like getting your teeth cleaned; it’s pretty
serious. It shouldn’t be taken lightly. So we were happy about  this

Proposition 65
Announcement of Chemicals Selected by OEHHA for Consideration for Listing
by  the Carcinogen Identification Committee and Request for Relevant
Information on  the Carcinogenic Hazards of These Chemicals
[10/15/09]
The California Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Environmental
Health Hazard Assessment (OEHHA) is the lead agency for the implementation of
  the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986 (Proposition
65).  The Carcinogen Identification Committee (CIC) of OEHHA’s Science
Advisory
  Board serves as the State’s qualified experts for rendering an opinion
whether a  chemical has been clearly shown through scientifically valid testing
according  to generally accepted principles to cause cancer.  The chemicals
identified  by the CIC are added to the Proposition 65 list, which must be
updated  annually.
On _May  29, 2009, the CIC_
(http://www.oehha.ca.gov/prop65/public_meetings/cicagenda051509.html) 
considered the priority ranking of 38 chemicals of
which  they recommended that nine of the chemicals be placed in the High
priority  category.  OEHHA has initially selected five of the nine chemicals for
the  CIC’s review for possible listing under Proposition 65 and is
initiating the  development of hazard identification materials for these
chemicals.
[The  remaining four chemicals will be the subject of a future public
notice or  notices.]  The five chemicals are listed in Table 1 below.

  entitled: “Process for Prioritizing Chemicals for Consideration under
Proposition 65 by the State’s Qualified Experts,” adopted in 2004, and

OEHHA identified 38 chemicals through application of an epidemiology data
screen and an animal data screen, and a preliminary toxicological evaluation
of  the available overall evidence of carcinogenicity, as outlined in the
2004  prioritization process.  These 38 chemicals were _presented and
released for public comment on March 5, 2009_

a separate listing of the relevant studies identified for each  chemical.
These materials were provided to the Committee and also made  available on
OEHHA’s Web site at _www.oehha.ca.gov_ (http://www.oehha.ca.gov/) .  The
Committee met to  consider the materials for all 38 chemicals at a public
meeting on May 29,  2009.  At this meeting, the Committee advised OEHHA by
majority vote that  nine chemicals be given high priority consideration for
preparation of hazard  identification materials.  The five chemicals identified
in
Table 1 are a  subset of the nine high priority candidates.  The hazard
identification  materials for the five chemicals will be presented at a future
meeting for  Committee review for possible listing of the chemical under
Proposition  65.  OEHHA anticipates announcing a similar request for relevant
information on the remaining four chemicals at a future date.
By this notice, OEHHA is providing the public an  opportunity to provide
information relevant to the assessment of the evidence of  carcinogenicity for
any of the chemicals listed in Table 1.  Relevant  information includes but
is not limited to:  cancer bioassays, cancer  epidemiological studies,
genotoxicity testing, and other pertinent data on  pharmacokinetics, biomarkers,
and effects on biochemical and physiological  processes in humans for any
of the five chemicals.  Interested parties or  members of the public wishing
to provide such information should send it to the  address given below.
The publication of this notice marks the start of a  60-day data call-in
period.  This period will end on Tuesday,  December 15, 2009.  The information
received during this  data call-in period will be reviewed and considered
by OEHHA as it prepares the  cancer hazard identification materials on these
chemicals.  This request  for information is the next step in the process
described in the 2004  prioritization procedure.
Notification of the availability of the hazard identification materials and
  of the time, date, location, and agenda of the meetings of the Carcinogen
Identification Committee where these chemicals will be considered will be
provided in subsequent notices published in the California Regulatory Notice
  Register and will also be posted on OEHHA’s website.  It is  anticipated
that the hazard identification materials will be made available for  a 60-day
comment period prior to the Committee meetings at which these chemicals
will be considered.

WHAT'S YOUR  REACTION?


Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack was getting lots of  appreciative
applause and head nods from the packed hall at the Community Food  Security
Coalition conference today, held in Des Moines, Iowa. He described  the USDA's
plans to improve school nutrition, support local food systems, and  work with
the Justice Department to review the impact of corporate  agribusiness on
small farmers. But then, with time for only one more question,  I was handed the
microphone.

"Mr. Secretary, may I ask a tough question  on GMOs?"

He said yes.

"The American Academy of Environmental Medicine this year said that
genetically modified foods, _according to animal studies_
(http://www.responsibletechnology.org/utility/showArticle/?objectID=2989) , are
causally linked to
accelerated aging, dysfunctional immune regulation, organ damage,
gastrointestinal distress, and immune system damage. _A study came out by the
Union
of Concerned Scientists_
(http://www.ucsusa.org/food_and_agriculture/science_and_impacts/science/failure-\
to-yield.html)   confirming what we all know,
that genetically modified crops, on average,  reduce yield. _A  USDA report _
(http://www.ers.usda.gov/publications/eib11/eib11.pdf) from 2006 showed that
farmers don't actually increase income  from GMOs, but many actually lose
income. And for the last several years,  the United States has been forced to
spend _$3-$5 billion per year_

)  to prop up the prices of the GM
crops no one wants.



"When you were appointed Secretary of Agriculture, many of our mutual
friends--I live in Iowa and was proud to have you as our governor--assured  me
that you have an open mind and are very reasonable and forward thinking.  And
so I was very excited that you had taken this position as Secretary of
Agriculture. And I'm wondering, have you ever heard this information? Where  do
you get your information about GMOs? And are you willing to take a
delegation in D.C. to give you this hard evidence about how GMOs have  actually
failed us, that they've been put onto the market long before the  science is
ready, and it's time to put it back into the laboratory until  they've done
their homework."



The room erupted into the  loudest applause of the morning.

Secretary Vilsack knew at once what  kind of crowd he was dealing with. Or
so I thought.

He said he was  willing to visit with folks, to read studies, to learn as
much as he possible  can. He pointed out that there are lots of studies, not
necessarily  consistent, even conflicting. He said he was in the process of
working on a  set of regulations and had brought proponents and opponents
together to search  for common ground. And he was looking to create a
regulatory system with  sufficient assurances and protections.

At this point in his answer,  Secretary Vilsack, who has a history of
favoring GMOs--and even appears to be  more pro-GMO than his Bush administration
predecessors--was trying to sound  even handed. Then he made a tragic
mistake.

After a slight pause, he  added in a warm tone, "I will tell you that the
world is very concerned about  the ever-increasing population of the globe
and the capacity to be able to  feed all of those people."

Moans, groans, hisses, even boos. Not rowdy,  mind you. But clearly
agitated.

You see, the people in the room were  among the top experts at ACTUALLY
feeding the world. They included numerous  PhDs who had spent their careers
looking deeply into the issue. Among those  present were several of the authors
of the authoritative _IAASTD report_ (http://www.agassessment.org/) . The
International Assessment of Agricultural  Knowledge, Science and Technology
for Development, is the most comprehensive  evaluation of world agriculture
ever. It was a three-year collaborative effort  with 900 participants and 110
countries, and was co-sponsored by all the  majors, e.g. the World Bank,
FAO, UNESCO, WHO. The behemoth effort evaluated  the last 50 years of
agriculture, and prescribed the methods that were now  needed to meet the
development and sustainability goals of reducing hunger and  poverty, improving
nutrition, health and rural livelihoods, and facilitating  social and
environmental sustainability.

And GMOs was not one of those  needed methods! It was clear to the experts
that the current generation of  GMOs did not live up to the hype
continuously broadcast by biotech companies  and their promotional East Coast
wing--the
federal government.

In fact,  the night before Vilsack addressed the conference, the same
audience heard a  keynote by Hans Herren, the co-chairman of the IAASTD report,
during which he  reiterated that biotechnology was not up to the task. And
this morning, Hans  Herren was in the room when Vilsack tried to play the
feed-the-world card. Bad  move.

Vilsack responded to the crowd's rejection by saying, "And well  you all
can disagree with this, but I am just telling you this. As I travel  the
world, I am just telling you what people are telling me. They are very 
concerned
about this."

Thus, he distanced himself from the contentious,  and fallacious, argument.
He was just reporting what others had told  him.

And that may in fact be his problem with understanding the serious  health
and environmental dangers of GMOs in general, if he is simply, as he  says,
repeating what others--Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont--have told him over  and
over again.

It's true that I have mutual friends of Tom Vilsack who  like and respect
him and believe him to be reasonable and thoughtful. I have  seen this
myself, but not on the GMO issue.

Perhaps the reaction of the  experts this morning will help to jar him out
of his GMOs-feed-the-world  mindset. Unfortunately, he is now deeply
immersed in the second of this week's  food conferences here in Des Moines, the
World Food Prize. It features the  major GMO promoters from around the world,
including Bill Gates (who gives  tens of millions to GMO development in
Africa), and top executives of DuPont  and Syngenta. Expect to hear constant
chatter about how GMOs are the solution  to world hunger which, unfortunately,
may undue any of the restructuring that  this mornings run in with reality
may have awakened.

In the meantime,  if there are Q & A sessions at meetings where Secretary
Vilsack is  speaking or attending, I'll do my best to get to a mic.

No Deaths From Vitamins or Minerals
Poison Control  Statistics Prove Supplements' Safety
(OMNS, October 14, 2009) There was not even one death caused by a  vitamin
or dietary mineral in 2007, according to the most recent  statistics
available from the U.S. National Poison Data System. The  132-page annual report
of
the American Association of Poison Control  Centers published in the
journal Clinical Toxicology shows zero deaths  from multiple vitamins; zero
deaths
from any of the B vitamins; zero  deaths from vitamins A, C, D, or E; and
zero deaths from any other  vitamin. (1)
Furthermore, there were zero deaths in 2007 from any dietary mineral
supplement. This means there were no fatalities from calcium, chromium,  zinc,
colloidal silver, selenium, iron, or multimineral supplements. There  was one
death from chronic overdose of magnesium hydroxide, commonly known  as the
laxative/antacid milk of magnesia, and it was inappropriately  listed in the
"dietary supplement" reporting category. Nutritional  supplements do not
contain magnesium hydroxide.
Over half of the U.S. population takes daily nutritional supplements.  Even
if each of those people took only one single tablet daily, that makes
154,000,000 individual doses per day, for a total of over 56 billion doses
annually. Since many persons take more than just one vitamin or mineral  tablet,
the numbers are considerably higher, and the safety of nutritional
supplements is all the more remarkable.
61 poison centers provide coast-to-coast data for the U.S. National  Poison
Data System, which is then reviewed by 29 medical and clinical
toxicologists. In 2007, NPDS reported 1,597 fatalities from drugs and  other
ingested
materials. Not one death was due to a vitamin or dietary  mineral supplement.
If nutritional supplements are allegedly so "dangerous," as the FDA and
the news media so often claim, then where are the bodies?

The New York Times yesterday published a remarkable joint  op-ed from
Senators John Kerry (D-MA) and Lindsay Graham  (R-SC). Remarkable not because
Graham became the first  Republican to sign on to a climate bill, but because
of the  enormous price Kerry paid for that support.
Their op-ed calls for vastly increased support not only  for new nuclear
reactors but also coal and oil as well.  Indeed, their proposal reads like
nothing more than a wish  list from the dirty energy industry. If adopted,
their  proposal would make the climate bill one in name only, and  instead would
provide a dirty energy bonanza that would rival  the worst excesses of the
Bush administration.
We all must act now.

Here is a brief excerpt from the Kerry/Graham op-ed: "Nuclear power needs
to  be a core component of electricity generation if we are to  meet our
emission reduction targets. We need to jettison  cumbersome regulations that

permit system that  maintains vigorous safeguards while allowing utilities to
secure financing for more plants."

Note that the permit system has been repeatedly streamlined  over the past
two decades, and even NRC chairman Greg Jazcko  admits the slow pace of NRC

This fall, spread of H1N1  influenza
("swine flu") is expected to increase, perhaps as an even more  dangerous
strain
than that which was present this spring. Health care  settings, schools and
workplaces are the most likely places for people to be  exposed to H1N1.
The Committees will receive
testimony on: current H1N1  flu activity and monitoring and tracking
activities
being conducted by state  and local health officials; an update on infection
rates in New York State;  the H1N1 vaccine, its efficacy and safety,
availability of supplies and  vaccination distribution plans; techniques to
prevent the spread of the H1N1  "swine flu;" educational, outreach and
preventive steps identified by  government health and safety agencies; and
how
health care settings, schools  and workplaces are implementing these steps.
Persons
wishing to testify or  attend should complete the hearing reply form below
and
return as indicated  as soon as possible, but no later than Wednesday,
October 7.
It  is
important that the form be fully completed and returned so that persons
may be notified
in the event of emergency postponement or  cancellation.
Oral
testimony will be limited to ten minutes in length. All  testimony is
under oath. In preparing the order of witnesses,  the
Committee will attempt to accommodate individual requests to speak  at

ALBANY — Formaldehyde, mercury and squalene may sound like ingredients in
some kind of toxic chemistry experiment but these are actually what can be
found  in the H1N1 flu vaccine, which should be made available to the public
next  week.

And it is partially because of the presence of these toxins that  nearly
500 people rallied at the Capitol Tuesday against the state Department of
Health mandating that health care workers should be vaccinated for the “swine
flu” by the end of November. If they don’t comply, these medical
professionals  could lose their jobs.

“I’m worried about what is in the vaccination  itself but I am especially
worried that my freedom of choice has been taken away  from me,” said Andrea
Schofield, a nuclear medicine technologist who drove from  Rochester to
attend the protest. “We want a choice but still be able to keep our  jobs.”

Schofield said she received a letter last week from Unity  Hospital, where
she works, which stated that all hospital employees had to get  the shot or
become unemployed. But, in lieu of this, she said educating the  public and
health care workers on preventing the flu would be a better course of
action.

At a press conference Tuesday afternoon, just an hour after the  conclusion
of the rally, with state Department of Health Commissioner Richard  Daines
explained that it was up to individual institutions on what would happen
with individuals who refused the shot. This could lead to termination or
suspension and if the entire medical institution refused to give the vaccination
  the state would do an investigation and determine a plan of  correction.

Usually about 30 to 50 percent of health care workers  voluntarily get the
normal, seasonal flue vaccine. “That is not enough,” said  Daines adding
that the number should be closer to between 70 and 90 percent  getting the
shot and since those numbers could not be reached voluntarily, a  mandate is
now in place.

The state’s Hospital Review and Planning Council  adopted the regulation on
Aug. 13 after it was recommended by the DOH. It also  calls for health care
workers to get the regular seasonal flu  vaccine.

There is a proposal for nursing home workers to get these shots  but so far
it mainly applies to employees at hospitals, in home health care, and  in
hospice care.

New York would be the first state in the country to  mandate these shots,
DOH officials said.

“I have no trust left in this  government,” said Peg Roberts of Utica who
was at the East Capitol Park rally.  “I took the 1976 shot they had for this
and, looking back, I don’t know why I  let them stick that needle in me.”

Many protesters said they did not want  to be “guinea pigs” and that it
was “their body and their choice” about if they  wanted to take the
vaccines.

At the rally, Dr. Michael Schachter said  that squalene, which is in the
vaccine, has been associated with Gulf War  syndrome and other autoimmune
reactions.

The New York Heath Care Workers  and New York Liberty Council, which
sponsored the rally, want to file a lawsuit  against the DOH to stop the
mandatory
vaccinations.

Meanwhile, Daines  said he had no qualms with taking the vaccine himself as
long as it was in  supply.

“[Patients'] interests are served by having health care workers  vaccinated,
” said Daines. “They're on the list, not because of personal benefit  but
because we put patients first before our own interests. [The rally was] one
more chance to pump air into an argument that just won’t hold air.”

The  DOH said it will put in its first order for the H1N1 vaccine today and
should  receive it by next week.

I just returned from a spirited rally in Albany to protest the mandate of
the NYS Health Commissioner that all Health Care providers must receive the
H1N1  vaccine by November 30 in order to maintain their employment in NYS
hospitals.  We heard vigorous challenges to the State's assumptions in light
of the  preponderance of scientific evidence that raises serious doubts about
the  proposed vaccine. Speakers included health broadcaster  Dr. Gary
Null,PhD, Dr.Michael Schachter,MD, Alan Phillips,JD attorney specializing in
vaccination laws and exemption and Ralph Fucetola,JD health lawyer
specializing in vitamin regulation and laws. We were advised that a recent 
tightly
held secret test of the H1N1 vaccine abroad a naval ship resulted in  serious
adverse events and will soon be displayed on Gary Null's website

Dr.Richard Daines,MD, NYS Commissioner of Health had previously proposed a
bill to mandate that all health care personnel in long term care
facilities must receive annual influenza vaccinations .Bills to implement  this

the Senate by Chairman Duane, S 3256.
