B Complex Trace Minerals for Mental Health (Psychiatric diseases)

Dr. Jonathan V.Wright,MD _www.wrightnewsletter.com_
(http://www.wrightnewsletter.com) in his newsletters of February 2009 and
November 2009 wrote
about the use of B-Complex and trace minerals for Mental Health conditions
such as bi-polar disorder. Preliminary studies at the University of
Calgary,Canada have shown some effectiveness with atypical obsessive-compulsive
disorder, pervasive developmental delays and attention deficit
disorder.,Asperger's syndrome, generalized anxiety disorder,Pader-Willi
syndrome
depression,anxiety and rage.

The study in the article used a proprietary formula consisting of Vitamins
A,C,D and E, 8 B Complex vitamins in fairly low doses even if you have to
take 4 pills per day as the label recommends, the minerals
Calcium,Phosphorus,Magnesium, Potassium,,Iodine, Zinc,Selenium and Copper. The
formula was
also recommended by Dr.Charles Popper,MD an eminent Harvard Medical School
psychopharmacologist who found an 86% of bipolar patients showed a
positive response. The somewhat pricey patented formula can be seen at
_www.truehope.com_ (http://www.truehope.com) But you can find the nutrients
at a
better price in most health food stores.

I would add the significant benefit for epilepsy, in my own case, my
epilepsy was completely reversed using B Complex vitamins and trace minerals.
In my case I simultaneously took both vitamin B Complex supplements (20 mg)
and dietary change to include large amounts of liver, dark leafy green
vegetables, whole wheat bread and brown rice. Other people with epilepsy who
have tried this have found it successful. For some B Complex pills have not
worked, but consumption of foods high in B Complex and trace minerals has
worked. Other people have reported success for schizophrenia.

There will be a conference on Micronutrients for Mental Health, in San
Francisco, California on Friday December 4 and Saturday December 5,2009.
Speakers will include Dr.Popper and Dr.Bonnie Kaplan,PhD researcher on this
formula. Also speaking will be Dr.Scott Shannon,MD who will present on
Micronutrients for mental health in children, Carol Banyas,MD,PhD and Larry
Cormier,MD on micronutrients in adults with bipolar and depression. Dr.Daniel
Smith,DC will discuss the role of amino acids in mental health. The conference
website is _www.mmhforum.org_ (http://www.mmhforum.org)

Actually the treatment for many mental health or psychiatric diseases have
a very long pedigree in traditional medical literature. According to the
National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) the US Government agency funding
research on this topic, the symptoms of schizophrenia include
hallucinations,delusions,disordered thinking, movement disorders,flat
effect(personality), social withdrawal and cognitive defects. The NMH lists
symptoms of
Depression as persistent sad, anxious or 'empty' mood, feelings of
hopelessness, pessimism, feelings of guilt, worthlessness, helplessness,
fatigue being
slowed down, difficulty remembering, or making decisions.

Then when you look up the symptoms of Beriberi, the classical Vitamin B1
deficiency disease it on Medline Plus it lists loss of sensation in hands
and feet, potential brain damage Later symptoms are mental confusion and
speech difficulties.
When you look up the symptoms of Pellagra, the classical vitamin B3
(niacin) deficiency it includes mental confusion and delusions and scaly skin.
Isn't there an overlap there? It is no surprise that these B Complex
vitamins often work.
Arnold
