Protecting Ancient Sites Is A Balance Of Access

THE NEEDLES DISTRICT -- Chris Goetze scrambled up some
slickrock in Canyonlands National Park the other day
and discovered a spot where ancient people must have
hung out thousands of years ago.
The National Park Service archaeologist could see
rock-and-mortar food storage bins built into the joint
between two layers of sandstone. Grinding stones,
apparently worn smooth from use, lay nearby. And a row
of seven white dots had been painted onto the wall
behind the human rubble.
The scene, drenched that day in brilliant desert
sunlight, had been, for centuries, exposed for all to
see. There is even a dirt Jeep track nearby. Yet, the
ruin was unrecognized, even by the Park Service's own
maps and files.

ANNISTON, Ala. (AP) Fear and uncertainty are running
high these days in the pink zone the area closest to
the first Army chemical weapons incinerator to be
built near homes, churches, schools and businesses

With the destruction of munitions set to begin soon,
some worry what will happen once workers start
chopping up Cold War-era rockets, shells and mines and
begin feeding them to the superheated flames. They
have visions of terrified children running for shelter
during an accident.

Americans United for Separation of Church and State
today denounced a House vote intended to bar
enforcement of a federal court decision striking down
display of the Ten Commandments in an Alabama
courthouse.

Americans United said the July 23 vote by the U.S.
House of Representatives is an act of political
grandstanding that would never survive court review.

220 years of history, complete with ghosts?


While the Mordecai House feels like it's nestled in
the midst of downtown Raleigh, it was once outside the
city limits. Encompassing over 5,000 acres of land, it
was also the heart of one of the largest antebellum
plantations in Wake County.

Today several Raleigh neighborhoods, including
historic Oakwood and Hayes-Barton, stand on former
Mordecai land.

Built about 1785 by Joel Lane of the "Father of
Raleigh" fame, for his son and daughter-in-law, Henry
and Polly Hinton Lane, it actually acquired its name
from Moses Mordecai, who married the Lane's daughter
Margaret.

As we said in last week's article, we were recently

yard work together.

What we didn't say in that article was how Otto
"caught
himself" before he made a critical comment to Susie
about
how she was doing her share of the work.

As we were doing the yard work, Otto watched the way
Susie piled the wheelbarrow with yard waste and it
kept
falling out as she wheeled it to the back of our
property.

A Spiritual Quickie

Do you live a Spiritual life or do you only call on
Spirit/God/Goddess/Your Higher Power, when you're in

I was raised Southern Baptist and taught about the
Bible and
about the power of God. Not much was ever said about

Spirit except that the trinity is God, Jesus and the

Wise Advice for Aspiring Writers

So you want to be a writer? People are different and
have
various methods of accomplishing the same result. So,
I
won't tell you to write every day for at least eight
hours.
For some of us that's an entire work day. But if you
do

have a fueling passion to one day be an author,
there's no
better time like now to start. There is no such thing
as
"I don't have time to write!"

Ask yourself some legitimate questions:

How many hours per day to do you spend watching
television?

How much time do you spend at your computer at home
or at work reading or sending email?

How much time do you spend reading magazines or
talking
on the telephone, catching up with near or distant
relatives,
family and friends?
