Life has taught me that I do not always have control over what
comes my way, only in how I choose to respond. I certainly did
not choose to have breast cancer, but I did choose to not let
that diagnosis define how I would experience that medical
adventure. The trick was in believing that in the heart of
all challenges, a gift exists.

I remember those initial feelings of anger and fear that flooded
every pore of my being when I first heard the words breast
cancer. I kept wondering, “Am I going to die? How can this be
happening to me?” In one quick moment my life turned upside
down and I felt very scared. Yet, I was determined to see a
rainbow in the sky every day.

But how was this going to happen? How was I going to be able
to keep my mind from wandering into all those scary thoughts? I
discovered it was possible if I could just remain focused in the
present moment and not let my mind become fixated in all those
“what if “ scenarios.

One day while nervously waiting for a doctor’s appointment,
I took out a pen and paper and began to “doodle” in an effort
to reduce anxiety and worry. After doing this for awhile, an
amazing thing happened. The more I doodled, the more relaxed,
calm and peaceful I was beginning to feel and I knew I had
stumbled into something very powerful.

I continued to doodle when I returned home. I even bought a
special “doodle book” and took it with me when I knew I would
be waiting somewhere (carwash, hairdresser, airports or before
meetings). At some point I decided to create one guideline...to
begin and end each doodle outline at the same point, without
lifting the pen off the paper and to do this in 3-5 seconds.
While I had no idea what the finished product would look like,
I began to see that there were never any mistakes! I created
amazingly beautiful doodles–all by letting go of control and
learning to have faith and trust in the process. Not bad for
a non-artist perfectionist! I was truly amazed.

I then began to see the correlation between this art form and
my adventure through breast cancer. Both were about immersing
oneself in a journey--that space between two points and learning
to trust in the unexpected twists and turns along the way. I
learned that there are no wrong turns, for in every turn a gift
can be found. The only mistake is in forgetting to slow down
long enough in order to discover what those gifts might be.

I’ve come to appreciate that challenges come in all sizes,
shapes and colors, and arrive when least expected. That’s
what makes their experience so fascinating.

Over the years, I’ve learned to embrace the unexpected with a
greater sense of trust and faith, knowing that I receive no
more than I truly have the capacity to handle.

It is a sad fact that most people pay little attention to their
health until it is at risk. It is only then that people truly
realise that health and wellbeing is far more important than
money, and that all the money in the world cannot always buy
health.

When it comes to our health prevention is obviously better than
cure, it is better to take care of our bodies throughout our life
and avoid illness than to abuse our bodies and then realise how
precious our health is when it might be too late.

Our health and the state of our bodies is essentially determined
by our choices - our diet, exercise, environment, everything
about our lifestyle. There are some factors determined by
genetics but we control the key aspects of our health and life.

Even when our health is suffering because of factors we cannot
control (like disease) we can still exert a positive influence on
our lives by living a healthy lifestyle. By watching our diet and
eating pure foods and beverages filled with natural minerals and
vitamins, by exercising regularly, by living as we are designed
to live - in harmony with the world.

Over 50% of people suffer from digestion related diseases - but
when we consider how much 'junk' we eat that should be no
surprise. Many people take the easy route of eating sugarry,
starchy, fatty, and greasy unnatural foods and we will pay the
price with our health. It is only when we pay this price that we
appreciate how foolish our diet was.

It is incorrect to look at food in a black and white way saying
some foods are good and some are bad, in actuality most foods are
beneficial in some way if taken in moderation. For example a
glass of red wine is good for the heart, and smoking a cigarette
is good for digestion, but if you were to eat several vitamin
rich meals, you may actually encourage the growth of malignant
cells in your body!

Another factor for our physical health is our mental health,
although it is oversimplified to separate them, because they are
so interconnected. Our emotional status affects our health and
stress contributes to so many diseases - cancer, heart attacks,
mental diseases, etc. In the developed countries (USA, Japan, and
Western Europe) mental diseases and disorders are the number one
reason for disabilities.

For instance, depression can be considered a minor disorder - so
many people suffer from it for years and since they are still
alive, it cannot be that dangerous. Yes, it is true, that one
does not die immediately of depression, but when people are
depressed, they either eat more (chocolates, fat- rich foods) or
refuse to eat at all, which in turn impacts their physical
health.

We are surrounded by pollution, noise, and radiation in our daily
lives and all of this have a negative effect on our health. We
cannot hide from these things but we can occasionally get away
from them by going to parks or the mountains where there is clean
air and peace.

Sports and exercise are proven friends of health. Moderate
physical activity at least two times a week is relaxing to body
and soul for old and for young. Besides burning calories, regular
exercise helps one feel happier and in good shape. This in turn
affects positively his or her health.

Hi everyone,

I thought I should pass this along because it seems to have helped me.

In the spring of 2000, I was involved in an incident on the job. I
worked in an underground enviroment as a blasthole driller. It could
be at times a very dusty and the atmosphere can become full of
airborne dust particles and fumes, mists, and gases.

To make a long story short, I was forced to walk to safety through a
tunnel filled with fresh blast smoke with high levels of carbon
monoxide, and other toxic chemicals. I ended up in hospital on oxygen
and after some lenghty treatment and diagnosis. I was deemed to have
as a result R.A.D.S. or reactive airway disorder. Prescribed ventilin
and some other inhalers, which i absolutley detest using, although
there is no doubt at times, they did help.

But as for my condition, even though i was removed from that
enviroment and by everyone else's opinion there was nothing really
wrong with me, i was weak, i slept a lot of the time....I had very
low blood oxygen. Then one day, while walking through the local
Walmart i spied a video in the bargin bin. It was called the Balanced
Workout by Scott Cole. It is a Tai Chi/kickboxing workout tape. It
took me a year before I got around to actually watching and
participating, but after the very first workout,(I only did the first
10 minute warmup) I was so energised, so alive, I felt like a fog had
lifted from my brain. No I don't beleive it was from the mystical
ying/yang theory, but rather from the easy, and relaxing deep
breathing excercises that are involved, I felt like I had been
breathing pure oxygen for the first time. I darn near didn't sleep
for a day! I went for walks, even cleaned the house. I try now to
make it a part of my daily routine first thing in the morning, it
also helps my stiff back. My Uncle had heart surgery, and his heart
specialist told him that the Western pepole are notorotiously shallow
breathers, and gave him some other deep breathing excersises to do
after his bypass.

I have to tell you, and i am in no way related to this guy or is this
a pitch, you could learn tai chi somewhere else. I just happen to
live in a very remote part of Canada. So my options to learn it from
somewhere else are limited.

If anyone in the group, thinks that this may apply to them...I
suggest you give some form of deep breathing a try, even if you have
to use your ventilin to get started.

You have nothing to lose, except the time of your life.

Without oxygen, there is no life.

Take care, Greg

DangerBusters™ Recommends 25 Steps for Effective Toxic Mold Removal,
Remediation, and Abatement
Copyright © 2005 Phillip Fry
DangerBusters™
http://www.moldinspector.com/

VANCOUVER, CANADA. For safe and effective toxic mold removal,
remediation, and abatement, DangerBusters™ recommends that
homeowners, landlords, other property owners, and employers
follow 25 steps to kill, remove, and prevent toxic mold.

Toxic molds and fungi are a significant source of airborne
volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that create indoor air-quality
problems. Toxic mold growth produces dangerous mycotoxins and
infectious airborne mold spores which often cause serious health
problems to residents and workers.

Eliminating and preventing toxic mold infestation should include
these 25 steps:

1. Learn the techniques and procedures recommended for safe and
successful toxic mold inspection, testing, and remediation---
whether the property owner prefers “do it yourself” or to hire a
Certified Mold Remediator (CMR). How? Read mold remediation self-
help books and internet mold advice websites, plus get
professional guidance.

2. Locate and fix all sources of mold-causing water intrusion
such as recurring flooding, plumbing leaks, leaky roofs or
siding, blocked air-conditioning condensation drain lines, and
high indoor humidity (e.g., above 50 to 60%).

3. Inspect and mold test inside, above, and below each water-
penetrated ceiling, wall, and floor with a fiber optics
inspection device, a hidden moisture meter, do-it-yourself mold
test kits or inspection by a Certified Mold Inspector (CMI), and
by cutting out small core dry wall samples from the water-
impacted surfaces. Look in the middle and back of each core for
visible mold growth.

4. Find and locate all toxic mold infestations (visible and
hidden) in the entire home or building by thorough, all-around
mold inspection and mold testing (with mold laboratory analysis
and mold species identification of collected mold samples).

5. Test the outward airflow from each heating/cooling duct
register for elevated levels of airborne mold spores. If there is
a serious toxic mold infestation anywhere in a building, airborne
mold spores from such mold locations will usually enter and
contaminate the heating/cooling equipment and ducts, as well as
the rest of the building.

6. Replace toxic mold-infested heating/cooling equipment and
ducts if the owner can afford to do so. Otherwise, do repeated
mold fogging with a mold fogging machine and an EPA-registered
fungicide or an effective mold home remedy into the return air
duct while the system is running on fan ventilation to deliver
the fungicide to internal surfaces.

7. If any residents or workers are experiencing any possible
toxic mold health symptoms, or if there is a strong smell of
mold, or if there are visible signs of major mold growth anywhere
in the building, or if the building tests positive for elevated
levels of airborne mold spores, the occupants should move
temporarily to a mold-safe place until after successful mold
remediation and clearance testing.

8. Occupants moving out should not take any clothing, personal
possessions, furnishings, furniture, or equipment until after
such items have been effectively mold decontaminated outdoors [or
in a clean room built from plastic sheeting] to avoid mold cross
contamination of the temporary living or working quarters.

9. Do not paint over mold problems. Mold loves to eat paint as a
snack food. Don’t expect to kill mold successfully by using paint
containing a mildicide [too mild to kill existing toxic mold
infestation] or with a paint primer sold to hide water damage
stains.

10. Before beginning to work in the mold-contaminated areas,
contain the moldy work area (and thus contain the toxic mold
spores that will be released into the air by opening up mold-
infested walls and ceilings) by using wall-to-wall, floor-to-
ceiling plastic sheeting as containment walls.

11. After the installation of air tight mold containment walls,
dry the work area (especially if still wet from flooding or a now
fixed water leak or roof leak) with one or more large
dehumidifiers. Improper fan drying can spread mold spores to
cross contaminate an entire building and its heating/cooling
system.

12. Inside the mold containment area, use a large fan in the
window to exhaust air directly outside on a continuous basis to
expel airborne mold spores and remediation-caused dust---or
better yet, use an industrial hepa filter to filter out mold,
with a flexible hose directly venting the exhaust air flow to the
outdoors.

13. While working inside the mold containment area, always wear
effective protective gear such as protective biohazard suit. ($10
at safety stores) or painter's coveralls and booties or a long
sleeve shirt and pants; gloves; and a one piece, full face
breathing respirator mask with an organic vapor cartridge
filtration, available from local safety, hardware, and home
improvement stores.

14. Spray or fog visible mold with one or two wet sprayings or
foggings of either an EPA-registered mold fungicide or with an
effective mold home remedy if the mold remediation funds are low.
While spraying or fogging a fungicide no one else should be
inside until the spray or fog has dried.

15. Do not use chlorine bleach to kill mold or disinfect moldy
areas. Bleach is not an effective or lasting killer of toxic mold
growth and mold spores on and inside porous, cellulose building
materials such as wood timbers, drywall, plasterboard,
particleboard, plywood, plywood substitutes, ceiling tiles, and
carpeting/padding.

16. After the killing of all visible surface mold, the next step
is to clean off as much surface mold growth as possible. Scrub
and clean moldy surfaces and mold growth areas with either Borax
laundry detergent (a natural mold cleaner) in warm water or TSP
(trisodium phosphate) from a hardware or home improvement store.

17. Except for wood support timbers and building materials to be
saved, remove and safely discard all other mold-contaminated
building materials in doubled up construction trash bags (double
bagging) having a 6 mil thickness.

18. Remove all mold growth from the mold-infested wood surfaces.
All wood beams, wall timbers, roof trusses, floor joists, plywood
surfaces, and other lumber to be saved need to be totally cleaned
of mold growth by using power tools such as a planer, grinder
with wire brush attachment, and sander---or replace the moldy
timbers.

19. Re-spray twice the cleaned out area with another wet spraying
of an EPA-registered mold fungicide or an effective mold home
remedy to kill any remaining, living toxic mold spores or mold
growths.

20. Spray a protective fungicidal coating on all remediated-
surfaces prior to rebuilding and closing in the mold-remediated
area. The fungicidal coating helps to protect the wood and other
cellulose-based building materials against future mold growth.

21. After the final drying of the fungicidal coat spraying, it
would be helpful to spray all cleaned timbers and other wood
surfaces with a clear, liquid, plastic coating (available from a
local paint dealer or hardware store) to make a hard,
impenetrable water barrier (upon drying) to protect the wood from
future high humidity and water leaks.

22. After the toxic mold remediation is completed, mold test
(clearance testing) all of the remediated surfaces plus the air
of each room, attic, basement, crawl space, garage, and the
outward air flow from each heating/cooling duct register to find
out if those areas are now mold safe prior to rebuilding the
cleaned out areas with new building materials.

23. Remove mold from all personal property, furnishings,
furniture, and equipment that have been exposed to building mold
by washing the items outdoors or in a plastic-sheet-built clean
room with Borax laundry detergent (a natural mold cleaner) in
warm water. In addition, spray a fungicide on all surfaces.

24. Close in the mold-remediated area with mold-free, new
building materials which have been carefully inspected to be
mold-growth-free, and which have been pre-treated by spraying
with one to two wet coatings of both an EPA-registered mold
fungicide and an EPA-registered fungicidal coating.

25. On-going cleaning, building maintenance, mold maintenance,
and all-around building inspection on a regular basis (including
air conditioning/heating equipment and ducts, plumbing, roof,
siding, windows, and water supply/sewer lines) are required to
help prevent the regrowth of toxic mold infestation problems. A
mold-safe building is not a one-time effort.

How to Do Low-Cost Mold Sample Collection and Mold Laboratory Identification of
Mold Species

VANCOUVER, CANADA. Although any mold in elevated levels indoors
can cause severe health problems for mold-sensitive occupants,
several toxic molds such as Stachybotrys, Aspergillus, and
Penicillium pose far greater health risks than others, according
to Phillip Fry, Certified Mold Inspector and author of the book
"Mold Health Guide."

Thus, many homeowners, rental property owners, tenants,
employers, and employees in Canada, the USA, and worldwide want
to know, and need to know, the precise identities of the various
mold species infesting their moldy home, apartment, or workplace.

The accurate identification of mold species requires two steps:
(1) physical collection of mold samples from the moldy building;
and (2) mold laboratory analysis of the collected mold samples.

For the first step, a property owner, manager, tenant, or
employee usually hires a certified mold inspector, an industrial
hygienist, or an environmental hygienist for mold inspection and
collection of mold testing samples, at a typical cost of US $500
to $2,000 for a 2,000 square foot (186 square meters) home.

This inspection and testing fee usually includes mold laboratory
analysis and mold species identification for a small number
(3 to 10) of collected mold samples.

Alternatively, if the available funds for mold testing and mold
lab analysis are low, it is possible to achieve the same accurate
mold testing results for just $60 to $200 by using---

(1) inexpensive, transparent, sticky, adhesive tape (“lift tape
sampling”), such as Scotch® brand tape, to collect the mold
samples; and

(2) a low-cost Asian mold analysis laboratory (e.g., $20 per
sample for mold species identification and quantification,
compared to the usual $50 to $150 per sample in North America
or Europe).

Lift tape sampling and testing is an easy, practically-free
(except for the cost of the tape), and an effective way to
collect mold test samples when you---

(1) Can see mold growing on a wall, ceiling, floor, carpeting,
furniture, heating/cooling duct register, or other surface;

(2) Want to know whether a particular stain, discoloration, or
mystery substance on the wall or another surface is actually
mold growth; and/or

(3) Smell mold (the digestive gas emitted by mold eating the home
or building) and want to test a number of surfaces upon which
elevated levels of airborne mold spores may have landed or been
deposited, such as on walls, window sills, window and door trim,
refrigerator top, kitchen cabinet tops, undusted furniture,
heating/cooling duct registers, and the return air filter in
the heating/cooling system.

The easy steps involved in tape lift sampling are---

1. Cut a three-inch (3”) long strip of one-inch (1”) wide,
transparent sticky tape.

2. While wearing rubber gloves and a breathing respirator mask
(with organic vapor filters) from the local hardware or home
improvement store, press the tape strip firmly (sticky side down)
onto the visible mold growth or onto the surface being tested.

3. Remove (peel back) the tape from the surface.

4. Open up a small ziplock bag (a transparent, easily sealable
plastic storage bag), and press lightly the lift tape sample
sticky side onto the inside sidewall of the ziplock bag.

5. Close [zip shut] the ziplock bag completely. Tape it shut
if necessary to make sure no airborne mold spores can escape.

6. Attach to the outside of the ziplock bag a large adhesive
label with the tester’s name, date of sampling, property address,
the precise testing location at that address (e.g., “air
conditioning duct register in living room”), testing method
(“lift tape sampling”), and the name, postal address, email
address, phone number, and fax number (if any} of the person
submitting the sample to the mold laboratory.

7. Mail or express the collected lift tape samples (including
payment of the lab’s analysis fee} to the mold analysis
laboratory for mold species identification and quantification.

Fattening Foods: Not So Fattening After All?
Copyright © 2005 Nathan Latvaitis
Weight Loss Resources
http://www.weight-loss-resources.com/

Have you seen those “fat free” foods in supermarkets? Have you
possibly delighted in them guiltlessly thinking that they are
healthy for you? There’s a good chance that you have because
we usually follow what the media and the world around us says.
In this day in age, along with other health fads, many people
believe that fat makes you fat. This is true, to an extent.
What we fail to notice is that not all fats are bad.

If I had to guess, since the words fat (as in what’s in food)
and fat (as in excess body tissue, or adipose tissue) are the
same word it makes sense that when you eat fat, you get fat.
However, this is not the case. Now don’t get me wrong, there
is a difference between good fats and bad fats. If you eat the
bad fats they can make you fat, and also contribute to several
diseases. Your body uses the good fats in several ways to
repair itself, grow, and work more efficiently. Some of the
benefits of eating these healthy fats include:

  - Healthy fats are essential for absorption of fat-soluble
    vitamins

  - Healthy fats have an anti-inflammatory effect – they can help
relieve many of the pains that we experience around our joints

  - Healthy fats are essential for lubrication of our joints

  - Healthy fats improve insulin sensitivity. Insulin is the
hormone our bodies use to transport nutrients throughout the
body. Insulin sensitivity is essentially a measure of how
efficient our bodies use insulin. Insulin resistance is
the opposite of insulin sensitivity and is one of the early
    stages of diabetes.

  - Healthy fats can increase the strength of our immune system

  - Healthy fats play a major role in the production of energy
    from foods we consume

  - Healthy fats are required for our body to efficiently use
    oxygen

  - Healthy fats can improve skin texture

  - Healthy fats can increase your metabolism

  - Healthy fats can help you burn more fat (the kind that is
    attached to your body)

Dr. Udo Erasmus, author of one of the most popular books ever
about fat, “Fats the Heal, Fats that Kill”, writes in his book,
“At levels above 12 to 15% of total calories, healthy fats
increase the rate of metabolic reactions in the body and the
increased rate burns off more fat into carbon dioxide, water,
and energy (heat), resulting in fat burn off and loss of excess
weight.”

In this article we will discuss what exactly these healthy fats
are, where to get them from, easy ways to add them into your
diet, and the optimal amount of fat that you should consume.
I will also explain why the belief that “fats make you fat” has
developed because fats can make you fat if you eat too many of
them.

The Bad Fats

- Trans Fats

Trans fats are made by bubbling hydrogen through unsaturated
fats in order to make them solid and have a longer shelf life.
In addition, it was once thought that trans fats were a
healthier alternative to saturated fats. However, this is far
from the truth. In a statement made by the Bush Administration
they warn us to keep consumption of trans fats "as low as
possible" and also state that “the food industry has an
important role in decreasing trans fatty acid content of
the food supply.”

Some of the top Harvard nutritionists state that replacing
trans fats with a safer alternative would “prevent approximately
30,000 premature coronary deaths per year.”

<> In fact, Denmark has already taken an initiative and banned
the sale of trans fats to not allow more than 2% of the food
    to contain trans fats.

Now that you know that trans fats are bad, how do you avoid
them? In America, the FDA has required food manufacturers to
list the number of trans fats a food contains. This has helped
consumers make wiser choices, but according to FDA regulation,
“if the serving contains less than 0.5 gram, the content, when
declared, shall be expressed as zero.” This rule allows food
manufacturers to list very small serving sizes and as long as the
amount of trans fats is less than 0.5 grams in that particular
serving, they are allowed to list it as 0 grams of trans fats.

The ultimate way to tell if a food contains trans fats or not
is if the ingredients list contains the phrase “partially
hydrogenated” or “shortening”. Trans fats are mostly contained
in foods such as candies, cookies, snack foods, chips,
shortenings, and many restaurants.

- Saturated Fats

Saturated fats are widely recognized as being bad fats. You
probably know or believe this to be true, and it is to an
extent. There is actually quite a controversy between many
dieticians and nutritionists about saturated fats concerning
the optimal amount that we should consume or if we should even
consume them at all. The reason for most of the bad rap that
saturated fat has been given is due to the fact that the liver
uses it to produce cholesterol. It has been noted to raise the
good (HDL) cholesterol as well as the bad (LDL) cholesterol.
The FDA’s general guideline for saturated fat is to limit it
to about 10% of total calories per day. This would convert to
about 20 grams per day for diet containing about 2,000 calories
per day.

Saturated fat is mostly found in foods that are derived from
animals. The exception would be coconut, palm, and palm kernel
oils, which also contain saturated fat.

The Healthy Fats

- Monounsaturated Fats

Monounsaturated fat is believed to help lower the bad cholesterol
(LDL) and raise the good (HDL) cholesterol. As listed in the
beginning of this article, they also provide many healthy
benefits.

Monounsaturated fats are mostly found in vegetable oils. Some
examples would include olive oil and canola oil.

- Polyunsaturated Fats

Polyunsaturated fats contain the family of fats known as
Essential Fatty Acids, or EFAs. As you can tell by their name,
these fats are essential to the body because the body cannot
produce them on its own. The main EFAs are the Omega-3 fatty
acid and the Omega-6 fatty acid. They provide many of the
benefits listed at the beginning of this article as well. Good
sources of these fatty acids are fish, mustard seeds, pumpkin
seeds, walnut oil, leafy green vegetables, sunflower, soybean,
avocados, and perhaps one of the best sources is flax seed
(make sure to grind them or buy them in an oil form – the
stomach has trouble digesting the whole seeds).

- Why Fat Supposedly Makes You Fat

<> (Note: You can calculate your TDEE at:
<a
href="http://www.weight-loss-resources.com/calculators/dailycalories.html">http:\
//weight-loss-resources.com/calculators/dailycalories.html</a>)

There is a simple law known as the Law of Thermodynamics. In
addition to this, our bodies burn a certain number of calories
per day (this number changes everyday and is influenced by many
factors). This burning of calories everyday is known as total
daily energy expenditure or TDEE. If the amount of calories we
eat in a certain day is below our TDEE, we lose weight (this
weight is not necessarily fat all the time). If the amount of
calories we eat is equal to our TDEE, our weight stays the same.
If the amount of calories we eat is greater than our TDEE, we
gain weight (as stated before, this weight is not necessarily
fat all the time - it could be muscle). Many people skip this
important fundamental and look at the type of food they are
eating or several other factors before they investigate how
many calories they are eating per day and how to adjust their
amount of calories consumed to achieve their goals.

Fat holds 9 calories per gram, while carbohydrates and protein
hold only 4 calories per gram. This means that eating fat (any
type of fat, even the good kind) will result in a greater number
of calories consumed. Therefore, it’s more likely that you’re
going to go over your TDEE and gain weight, especially if much
of your diet comes from fattening foods. In addition to this,
fat is very similar chemically to the fat that your body stores.
This makes it easy for your body to store consumed fat as fat
(adipose tissue), but you must take into consideration that
storing fat (consumed) as fat (adipose tissue) is not the only
thing your body does with fat (consumed).

- The Optimal Levels of Fat

You’re going to want to eat part of your calories from fat to
get their many benefits, but not go too high. Like anything
else in the world of nutrition and fitness, there are many
opinions on what the optimal levels of fat in the diet are.
For instance, advocates of low-fat diets opt for absolutely
no fat and believe that fat is what makes us fat. However,
there is a flaw in this belief as they are also cutting out
the good, numerously beneficial fats. Then there are high fat
diets, such as diets suggesting low carbs (they usually say you
can eat all the fat and protein you want). Although, it is
generally accepted to consume between 15% - 25% of your calories
from fat while severely limiting the amount of trans fats and
watching the amount of saturated fat that you consume.

- Some Easy Ways to Add Fat Into Your Diet

Now you may be wondering how you’re going to add some of these
healthy fats into your diet. There are actually some really
easy ways to do so. If you eat salads, you can add about a
tablespoon of olive or canola oil. In my experience, you
usually cannot even taste these added oils. If you buy some
flax seed and grind it, you can add it to almost any food.
Once again, these flax seeds are mostly tasteless. Really,
adding these healthy nutrients into your diet isn’t that big
of a burden.

Epidemiology

Stachybotrys atra (also called S. chartarum and S. alternans) is a
dark-coloured fungus that grows well on damp materials that have a
high cellulose concentration, such as straw, grass, sawdust and
lumber. Its toxin can produce skin and mucous membrane irritation,
lymphocytic depletion and hemorrhagic syndrome in farm animals.1 The
question of whether it also produces hemorrhagic effects in humans
was raised in 1994 when a cluster of 8 cases involving infants in
Cleveland who developed idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis was
noted.2 Preliminary results of a case-control study indicated that
hemorrhage was associated with major household water damage during
the 6 months before illness and increased levels of measurable
household fungi, including the mould Stachybotrys (odds ratio 1.6,
95% confidence interval 1.0-30.8).3

Despite the researchers' caution that further study was needed to
determine causality, the alarming suggestion that exposure to this
fungus might be fatal led to the rapid closure and cleanup of
contaminated buildings, including portable classrooms in Ontario.4

It now appears that the health risks posed by Stachybotrys may not
be as hazardous as initially perceived. In March 2000 the Centers
for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Atlanta released the
results of 2 separate reviews of the Cleveland investigation.5 The
reviewers concluded that the association between cases of pulmonary
hemorrhage in infants in Cleveland and household water damage or
exposure to S. atra was not adequately substantiated by scientific
evidence. The cause of acute idiopathic pulmonary hemorrhage is
unresolved; the CDC recommends further surveillance and improved
assessment of environmental exposure to moulds and fungi.

These shortcomings demonstrate the methodologic difficulties
involved in assessing the health effects of indoor moulds. Fungi and
actinomycetes cause a variety of illnesses because of their direct
infection of human tissue. These conditions are well known. The
indirect nonspecific illnesses caused by these organisms are less
clear and more difficult to demonstrate. Possible pathologic
mechanisms for the indirect (noninfectious) causes include immune-
mediated (hyper-sensitivity pneumonitis), toxic (mucosal irritation)
and carcinogenic (aflatoxin) mechanisms. An expert panel has
recently reviewed the evidence supporting causal relationships
between certain fungi and a variety of these types of health
effects.6 People with diabetes, immunosuppression or atopy are
apparently susceptible populations, as well as infants.

Clinical management

In this case an indirect effect (pulmonary hemosiderosis) was
suspected to have been caused by S. atra. What should a physician do
when confronted with a case of hemoptysis in a child with no known
source of bleeding? Idiopathic pulmonary hemosiderosis is similar to
Goodpasture's syndrome. It is characterized by bouts of clinical or
subclinical pulmonary hemorrhage, but without the renal involvement
typical of Goodpasture's. Children are mainly affected; most have
iron-deficiency anemia and during bleeding episodes may have fever,
hyperbilirubinemia and reticulocytosis.7 To facilitate diagnosis and
reporting, the CDC is developing a standard case definition. In the
interim, such cases might be reported directly to the CDC and its
assistance sought regarding further investigations.

Recognizing patients in the office whose nonspecific respiratory and
systemic symptoms might be related to indoor mould exposure can be
challenging. Knowing which populations are at risk and knowing how
to take an environmental exposure history can be helpful.

Prevention

The best way to prevent mould growth is to keep all material in
homes as clean and dry as possible using adequate ventilation.
Surfaces where moisture collects frequently can be cleaned with a
baking soda solution one day and vinegar the next to keep moulds at
bay. In areas where flooding has occurred, prompt cleaning of walls
with water mixed with chlorine bleach, diluted 4 parts water to 1
part bleach, can prevent mould growth.8

Further information is available from the Canadian Mortgage and
Housing Corporation. It offers a wide range of housing-related
information, including clean-up procedures for mould in houses (800
668-2642; www.cmhc-schl.gc.ca). In addition, the College of Family
Physicians of Ontario has developed an Environment and Health Peer
Presenter Program (www.cfpc.ca/ocfp/cme/ehcpeer.html).

How To Help Your Dog With Food Allergies
Copyright © 2005 Gene Sower , All Rights Reserved
Lucy The Wonder Dog, LLC
http://www.lucythewonderdog.com/dogfoodreport.htm

Because every dog is unique, it's sometimes very difficult to
determine what causes food-related allergies and what doesn't.
Common pet food culprits include wheat, corn and soy. Various
proteins also create their share of problems in certain dogs.
I was shocked to learn that some dogs are allergic to chicken,
while I know from first-hand experience that my Jack Russell
Terrier Lucy used to be allergic to beef.

If excessive itching and scratching are the problems, that may
simply be the lack of Omega 3,6 and 9 fatty acids in your dog's
diet that's making their skin and coat dry. Winter indoor
heating may also be exacerbating the condition. Adding simple
food additives to your dog's food may be the key without
switching diets. Supplements like Mrs. Allen's Shed Stop,
Flaxseed Oil, Pet Botanics Skin & Coat supplement, Royal Coat
from Ark Naturals or Health & Shine from Dr. Harvey's are all
viable solutions for supplementing your dog's diet with the
needed Omegas that dog's and cats need to lubricate their skin
and coats.

Excessive and compulsive foot licking, or chewing and biting
other parts of the body, are generally a sign that allergies are
to blame.

Assuming it's food allergies and not environmental, many vets and
pet nutritionists recommend substituting a protein source that
your dog doesn't normally eat. Lamb is often used for this
purpose, because it's not as common a dog food ingredient. Lamb,
in and of itself, is not "non-allergic", but it's less common
than chicken and beef so it enables you to introduce something
new into your dog's diet, in effect, starting with a clean slate.

Some vets sell expensive "allergy free formulas" but there are
ways to figure this out on your own and a lot less expensively.
Increasingly, pet owners who have dogs with food allergies are
feeding various pet food mixes like Dr. Harvey's, Solid Gold
Holistique Blendz or The Honest Kitchen's FORCE formula, which is
grain free, or Sojourner Farms' new grain free Europa formula.

Mixes, while a bit more work, allow you to more closely control
what your dog is eating by beginning with a good "base" that
contains the proper nutrients and vitamins especially formulated
for dogs. Then, you can experiment by introducing your own
protein sources (whether raw or cooked) and seeing how your dog
reacts over the next few days.

Because The Honest Kitchen FORCE Formula is grain free but
chicken-based, I would stick to the Dr. Harveys or the Europa
which have no protein or grain sources. The Solid Gold Holistique
Blendz formula is also a good choice but that already contains
fish protein. Because fish-based protein is an unlikely protein
source for your dog to begin with, it's unlikely that it will
cause allergy problems now -- same theory with the lamb or any
other uncommon protein like venison or buffalo or rabbit. If
later you find that chicken is ok, I would give The Honest
Kitchen FORCE Formula a second look, too.

Beginning with one of these neutral, grain-free formulas, try
adding chicken for a week. If that goes well, than your dog is
probably ok with chicken. Then try beef. Then lamb. Try, fish,
too. If that goes well, than it was probably one or more of the
grains.

Now a picture is starting to form. Your dog's allergies have
improved with a grain free diet that includes certain proteins.

As we mentioned before, the point of introducing a different
protein source to test your dog's tolerance is because if your
dog is suffering some type of food-related reaction, common sense
tells you it's something she's already eating. Can't be having
reactions to something she never had yet, right?

Please note that when switching a dog's food, do it gradually
over 5 to 6 days. Begin a 4 to 1 ration, old to new food, than 3
to 2 on day 2, than half and half on day 3, than 2 to 3 on day 4
and 1 to 4 on day 5. Day six, you're switched over completely.
Than the real allergy testing can begin in earnest by sticking
with the new protein source for a week and than introducing a new
one every week taking note of your dog's reaction or, hopefully,
lack of one.

As you've probably figured out by now, there's no one answer
or "Silver Bullet" that will miraculously solve all your dog's
allergy problems overnight. You have to break the cycle by
moving your dog to a neutral, grain-free food and begin
experimenting with different proteins. Once you find a protein
or combination of proteins that work, try slowly introducing
grain formulas back into the diet to see if there's a reaction
or not. Using this gradual, common sense method combined with
a good quality dog food should have your dog on the road to a
happy, itch-free life.

Total Health

Essential Immune Health
http://www.essentialimmunehealth.com

Total health is a precarious thing. One day you're balanced, the
next day you're not. To tell the truth, I don't think we're ever
balanced perfectly. But some days we feel and think and act
better than others, don't we. To me, total health includes our
body, soul, and spirit...our life experience.

Full Potential

I do several things to help myself live toward my full potential.
Before I tell you about those things, though, I'd like to tell
you WHY I want to live to my full potential. It's the driving
purpose of my life, pointing me toward my future in heaven. I
believe the way I conduct myself on earth will directly influence
my placement in heavenly society! I really care whether the
Great Triune God is pleased with me or not. I want to make Him
smile now and I want Him to welcome me then (when I cross over
from Time into Eternity).

It's my strong belief (taken from the Bible: Luke 16, one of my
favorite sections) that nothing belongs to me here in this life.
It all belongs to God. Although, I'm a manager of Someone else's
goods here and now, someday I will be given belongings and
responsibilities of my own to manage (vs. 12). It feels strange
every time I internalize those thoughts and it feels strange to
admit that I'll die. Death is a horrible enemy! For instance, I
hate wrinkles...I hate saggy skin. Those things point out that
I'm dying, you know. I don't understand death, although people
close to me have died. I don't understand the triune
characteristic of God, and I don't understand eternity.

But I know my spiritual connection with My Favorite Person is
real and vibrant and I am walking through each day, trying to let
Him be God to me. May He please protect us all from obsessing
about health and beauty, strength and youthfulness. Death is an
enemy that WILL come over each of us someday.

Obsessive Society

Meanwhile we each have to choose how to fit in with our obsessive
society. What shall we do about our aging skin, our developing
ill health, and our loss of strength? Which health products
shall be important to each one of us? As for me, I target
several foundational problems and as my body is restored and
strengthened as much as possible, I move on to another pressing
problem.

For instance, I've taken 16 months in the past to cleanse my
colon, 18 months or so to cleanse my liver; I've changed my diet
to exclude most sugar; I've learned how to eliminate being fussy,
over forty, flatulent, and fat. Yes, I have, and I'll tell you
how too...just in case someone near and dear to you ever gets to
be forty!

Fussy, Over Forty, Flatulent, Fat!

  * fussy: stop eating processed foods and sugars, cleanse the
liver because emotions are stored there (emotions are not
invisible, they are literal chemical "things") Use my Young
Living essential oils and supplements made especially for
    cleansing the liver, http://www.essentialimmunehealth.com.

  * over forty: remember how you felt as a little child, free
from worries, full of trust and act like that again.

  * flatulent: change your diet to protein and vegetables, not
eating carbs very much at all.

  * fat: use my energy enhancement patches
(http://www.lifewave.com/dianne) that tell the body to burn
    fat for energy immediately.

Your Needs

These are all things that I do, so I'm recommending them to you
because of my own experience. Do you have any questions for me?
I'm FOR you and wanting to be of help to you. Do you need
anything from me? I'd love to teach you person to person how to
work toward total health. I want you to thrive, be successful in
God's estimation, and pass over into Eternity having lived to
your full potential! Can I help you?

Hello everybody,

I am new to this list. My name is Cristina and I'm Italian.
I have been alergic for an incredibly long time, I used to think
that there was no solution. But something that happened recently
made me change my mind:

I am spending 10 weeks in the UK to attend a course and I feel much
much better than I feel in Italy. Moreover I went home over the
weekend and I started sneezing again and I stopped as soon as I
arrived in England.

I had an allergy test in 1998, the results were that I am very
alergic to pollen and slightly alergic to dust.
In Italy I have a cat, I live in a city, my partner smokes and I
don't have any anti-acar fabrics in the house. Here in UK I live in
the country, my dorm room is very clean as cleaning personnel come
every week to hoover the place and nobody smokes.

The kind of allergy I have is rhinitis, I sneeze a lot when I wake
up and it's much worse in May and June. I also sneeze if I move from
a hot to a cold room and viceversa. I feel very badly if I stay in
dusty environments.

My first question is: according to my symptoms, which you think is
the main reason of the difference between Italy and UK? Is there
anything I can do to improve the situation or is it basically due to
the fact I live in an Italian city while here in Uk I'm in the
country?

My second question is: does anybody in the list have a smoking
partner? Have you got some useful advice on how to tackle the issue?

Thank you very much in advance for any help you might give.

Best wishes

Cristina

Chemicals in Personal Care Products

MangoLife Wellness Website

A recent epidemiologic survey in the UK revealed that 23% of
women and 13.8% of men experience some sort of adverse reaction
to a personal care product over the course of a year. Although
some of these reactions may be due to subjective sensory
irritation, various studies reveal that up to 10% of dermatologic
patients who are patch tested are allergic to cosmetic products
or their constituent ingredients. Causative products include
deodorants and perfumes, skin care products, hair care products,
and nail cosmetics. Allergic contact dermatitis mainly results
from fragrance chemicals and preservatives.

Recent work has suggested that additional fragrance chemicals may
need to be tested in order to identify those patients ‘missed’ by
the current fragrance mix; in particular, hydroxy-isohexyl-3-
cyclohexene carboxaldehyde has been singled out as an important
sensitizing agent. The increased usage of natural fragrances and
botanic extracts can also cause problems in their own right or
through co-reactivity. The preservative
methyldibromoglutaronitrile has also been recognized as an
increasingly important sensitizer in Europe, which has led to the
recent recommendation that it should be prohibited from ‘leave-
on’ products until information on ‘safe’ consumer levels becomes
available. Other emerging allergens include UV filters,
tosylamide/formaldehyde resin, and nail acrylates.

Fragrance ingredients are the most frequent cause of cosmetic
allergy, accounting for up to 30–45% of allergic reactions to
cosmetics in eczema patients. As well as being found in products
marketed to provide a scent they are also incorporated into the
majority of other skin care products. Fragrance ingredients can
cause dermatitis at the sites of application and also volatile or
photosensitive patterns of contact dermatitis, but may involve
other sites by direct transfer or even connubial contact.
Managing patients with proven fragrance allergy often proves
extremely difficult. Advising patients to use products labeled as
‘fragrance free’ will not necessary avoid all contact with
fragrance materials due to a discrepancy in the accepted
definition of the term. Fragrance is defined as any substance,
natural or synthetic, used solely to impart an odor to a cosmetic
product. However, if a fragrance material has more than one
function (e.g. preservative or emollient) it could legally still
be included in a fragrance-free product. Although these masking
fragrances are uncommon sensitizers, fragrance-allergic patients
should avoid them wherever possible. These substances include
benzyl alcohol, benzaldehyde, and cyclopentadecanolamide.
Consumers may also be unaware that rose oil, sandalwood oil, and
cedarwood oil are all fragrances and that other essential oils,
flower plant extracts, and flavorings are also usually
fragrances. Therefore, it is important to acknowledge that
natural fragrances and botanical extracts may also cause problems
for the fragrance-allergic individual.

Though further research is needed, a recent study has found that
a common group of chemicals used to preserve deodorants have been
detected in breast-cancer tissue. Researchers at the University
of Reading in England found traces of these chemicals, called
parabens, in 18 out of 20 samples, suggesting that they may be
absorbed by the body after they are applied to the skin. By
reading the ingredients of the products you purchase you can
become educated on what they contain and be able to reduce
unwanted substances.

Hi All,

You may think i am sounding preposterous.. but this
miracle comes from years years years..... of trial and
error experimentation of a suferer.

i get to the point straight....

Treatment is :

ingredients required

1) 120 to 150 ML ( approx slightly les than half of a
coke can) of low fat to medium fat cows milk

2) 7 to 10 meduim to large sized fresh and raw garlic
cloves

------------------------------------------------------

methord of preparation :

1) peel and cut the garlic cloves in very fine pieces
or crush them in a grinder

2) boil the milk and let it simmer in low flame for a
minute so that it gets well hot

3) mix the crushed/ finely cut garlic cloves in the
hot milk

4) put the milk in a glass and drink... you may not
like the taste alot but drink anyhow ( drink on an
empty stomach...i.e one hour after meals)

5) within 20 minutes of drinking you feel feel the
relief starting to happen which no salbutamol/
coresteroid or any other drug whatsoever would have
given you ever... within just three days of treatment
40% of your asthma is gone... you will throw all
inhalers you use within a week..

Duration of treatment

Twice a day for 10 days followed by once a day for
about 20 days... there after once or twice a week for
two months ... for maximum cure and ....a maintainence
dose of once a week for life wouldnt be a bad idea at
all

do not ask me what ingredient in garlic combines with
milk to create the almost magic potion... the proof of
the pudding lies in the eating... it works

All people you benefit from this treatment are
requested to send me a one line mail with a postcard
of their city :)

Regards

I just wanted to let you know that this is an excerpt from health

Health journal volume 44, number 1

Title: M.D. replaces, supplements prescription drugs with natural
mangosteen extract

J. Frederic Templeman, M.D. : I have been using magosteen with my
patients for almost 18 months. At first, I used it as a fallback
product only when the regular medicines I prescribed proved
ineffectual. I now use mangosteen extract as a first line therapy in
a wide range of conditions because it ahs, in my experience, proven
to be more efficacious than the prescription medicine I used to
prescribe for many conditions. In addition, I now use mangosteen
extract as an adjunctive therapy in conditions ranging from arthritis
and fatigue to eczema and sleep disorders. (For a complete listing of
diseases referended see chart below)

After 20 years of practice, I am well aware that many conidtions are
unsatisfactorily treated with prescription drugs. Wherther doctors
are prepared to admit this to their patients or not, they know it to
be true. Because I am not a naturopath and well versed in the use of
a broad range of natural remedies, beofre manogsteen extract was
available, I had few alternatives to prescription drugs as far as
comlementary prescribing was concerned. I cannot express the relief I
feel as a physician, knowing there is a safe, efficacious, natural
alternative I can use in the conditions listed in the chart that
follows. In additoins, it may be helpful for those reading this piece
to have a list of some of the prescriptiosn and over-the-counter
drugs that I rarely use anymore because, in my opinion, the
mangosteen etract equals or outpreforms them.

My purpose in setting out these lists is to allow patients to
evaluate for themsleves whether pharmaceuticals or phytoceuticals
should be used to treat their conditions. The basic questions I ask
is this: "Why would anyone use a drug to otain some effect that can
be found in a food?"

Mangosteen is a food. It is found in a functional beverage that has
produced therapeutic effects in my patients (without the side effects
of drugs) that rival what drugs can do. Do not stop your medications
but add this mangosteen beverage to your meds. We have not seen food-
drug interactions with this product. When you have used mangosteen
for a reasonable period of time (1-2 months) go to your doctor and
tell him what you've experienced and ask him to redo blood tests,
etc., to determine what effect the mangosteen has had. Then, with his
collaboration, reduce or stop teh medications that mangosteen has
made unnecessary.

You'll be suprised at teh benefits mangosteen can provide in chronic
illness at doses of four to six ounces before meals ideally three
times daily. For prevention, once a day is adequate.

I use mangosteen extract as a first-line therapy in the following
conditions: (phew getting carpal tunnel ...LOL)

*gastro-esophageal reflux disease * recurrent urinary tract infec.
*acid dyspepsia or gastritis * diverticulitis (slow integ.)
*hiatal hernia * sleep disorders
*arthritis * allergic rhinitis
*fibromyalgia * neurodermatitis
*fatigue or low energy states * eczema
*mild depressionor dysthymia * seborrhea
*mild to moderate anxiety states * otitis externa
*mild to moderate asthma * on-arthritis muscle or joint
*irritable bowel disease pain

I use mangosteen extract as an adjunctive therapy in the following
conditions:

*rheumatic or connective tissue dis. * ulcerative colitis and crohns
*degenerative disc disease * cancer
*lupus * cardiovascular disease and
*chronic pain syndrome hypertension
*peripheral neuropathy * post-menopausal mood disorder
*migraine headache and PMS
*stomache and duodenal ulcers * viral infections
*diabetes * bacteria infections
*cystic fibrosis * fungal infections
*moderate to severe depression * hemorrhoids
*psoriasis * severe allergic reactions

In my opinion, the mangosteen extract equals or outpreforms the
following prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs:

*nexium, prevacid, aciphex * prozac, zoloft, paxil, lexapro
*zantec, pepcid, other H2 blockers other anti-depressants when
*allegra, zyrtec, claritin, other used for dysthymia or anxiety
antihistamins * vicodin, percocet, duragesic
*singulair patches, other narcotics
*prednisone * celebrex, vioxx, bextra,
*Lotrisone, topicort, cutivate, other naproxen, arthrotec, ibuprofen
corticosteroids other anti-inflammatories
*Valium, xanax, other minor tranquil. * Ultram, talwin, other nonopiod
*Tegretol, neurontin, other anti- pain preperations

Hello Everyone,

We have a couple of list updates for you today.

1. Denise is coming along well. She just bought a house recently, and
I have been hearing rumors about how she may return to the Internet in
the near future. Yipee!

2. As most of you are aware, I co-moderate this list, AND with my
Internet business, I specialize in distributing targeted informational
articles to publishers and webmasters who wish to reprint them in
their publications and on their websites.

    http://thePhantomWriters.com

As such, I am adding this group to my database for the purpose of
sharing any Allergy or Asthma related articles that I might be asked
to distribute. (Please understand, with my service, I do not
distribute pure-play advertising to anyone. I only distribute
informational content to folks.)

Now, having said that, I do not expect to be distributing any
informational articles on this topic myself in the near future. But,
should I come into possession of this type of material, I will pass it
along.

3. Because I am opening this list for the purpose of disseminating
informational articles on Asthma or Allergy relating materials, I am
also opening the list to public submission of the same type of content.

I WILL ONLY ACCEPT ARTICLES ON THESE SUBJECTS. NO ADVERTISING WILL BE
PERMITTED.

All posts will be moderated.

So, if you create content in this category, please submit your content
for consideration. If you know of someone who does create content on
this topic, please have them subscribe to this group and submit their
content for consideration.

Thank you for your consideration in these matters. When Denise finally
returns to the web, she will return to bringing to you the information
that she has always found useful.

Just a quick list update. Denise is the owner of this
list and I help her manage the list. Denise is my sister,
but she is offline right now. She looks forward to the
time when she will be able to come back online, but until
that time, she must grin and bear her circumstances.

3. Relief after chemical exposure

<a HREF="http://wwRelief after Chemical Exposures

This posting is a letter from Ron Braithwaite, CNIN
(Canadian Neurotoxicity Information Network URL:
http://www3.sympatico.ca/cnin/
) It was originally posted on a discussion group.

As in all ideas and products, YMMV - "your mileage
may vary." What is safe for one person may not
be safe for another. Although these ideas have been
helpful for others with MCS/EI, the product may not
be safe for you. Use caution when trying any new
product or idea.

Ron gave me permission to post his letter stating,
Please feel free to share the letter on SHARE-FAQ.
I think the more people who know about this stuff
the better. It's amazing all the health info I
found that has helped others, in my search to find
out anything that would help me with my
neurotoxicity symptoms. My wife suffered for over
6 years with terrible migraines. The doctors had
her on this Dr. Jeckle Mr. Hyde medication that
gave her many unwanted and terrible side effects.
After the third time she took this natural mix of
vitamins minerals and food, she no longer had any
migraines, and has been free of them ever since.
She was on the doctor's medication for over 5 years
with no improvements in its frequency. I was so
happy I was able to help her... it's terrible to
see someone you love suffer
so much. Ron Braithwaite, CNIN"

Just thought I'd share a few things that helped
me with certain health problems related to my
chemical exposures.

1. Parsley Tea - This is a wonderful drink when
you have an upset stomach or stomach ache. No
longer a garnish, it soothes the tummy and takes the
pain away. It cleared up my irritable bowel syndrome,
and my acid reflux disease. We grow parsley in our
garden, and just a small sprig of it with some hot
water will work wonders.

2. Milk Thistle - One of the best liver detoxifiers
known. It actually helps repair damaged liver tissue
damaged from the toxins. The liver can rebuild itself,
and is the only organ in the human body that can do this.

3. Garlic Tablets - I use organically grown 'Kyolic'
aged garlic extract. Garlic is one of nature's best
natural antibiotics. Garlic also helps detoxify,
and the Kyolic has no nasty breath afterwards.

4. Window Fans - We use mechanical fans in our
windows that run 24-7.Indoor air pollution can
be 10 times greater than the outdoor air.

5. Vitamin E - A great antioxidant that helps
destroy the free radicals created by toxic chemicals.
Vitamin E is excellent for the lungs, and will aid in
repair to lung tissue. Vitamin E also is great if
you have a cold sore on your mouth. Break open a
capsule, and put it directly on the cold sore...
in a day or two it will be gone. Do not take high
does of Vitamin A. It can be toxic to the liver
if taken in high quantities for 2-3 months.
I take it once every 3-4 days.

6. Vitamin C - from Rose Hips. Vitamin C is
another great antioxidant. Our bodies can only
absorb Vitamin C for about 4 hours, and the rest
is passed, so if you don't take a 'time released',
you should take it 2-3 times a day.

7. Remove all carpet - carpet is a reservoir
for many pollutants and mold. New carpet emit
dozens of neurotoxic chemicals... some carpets
for years afterwards.

8. Spend the majority of your time upstairs,
out of the basement, unless you ventilate with
fans. Most toxic chemicals vapors are heavier
than an air molecule. Some are up to 10 times
heavier. They concentrate at the floor level
and many travel seeking out the lowest area in
the house.

9. Avoid MSG! Read all the labels of food
products you buy. Almost all processed/canned
soups contain MSG.

10. Avoid artificial sweeteners! If you must
sweeten, use sugar sparingly, or use Stevia....
a natural sweetener. Artificial sweeteners are
particularly dangerous in diet soft drinks and
hot drinks like coffee and tea. The chemicals
in these products metabolize to wood alcohol in the
human body.

11. Evening Primrose Oil - The healthy unsaturated
fatty acid. Our bodies need this unsaturated fatty
acid for a properly functioning immune system.
Avoid the saturated fatty acids that are harmful.

12. If anyone is suffering from migraines, - I
may be able to help. I cured my wife's migraines
she had for almost 6 years. The Migraine Society
of Canada did not want to hear this information ...
but then again, they get their funding from the
pharmaceutical companies that treat, (not cure) the
migraines. There's no money in cures....but there
is lots of money in treatments.

13. Buy 'Prescription for Nutritional Healing' -
An excellent a-z reference to drug-free remedies
using vitamins, minerals, herbs, and food supplements.
The cost is approximately $25-30 at most book stores.

14. Do not drink city water.

15. Avoid anti-perspirants as long as you can
(most contain aluminum).

16. If you get a headache when you go to town,
take something before you go to town to try to
avoid the headache. I used to get headaches on
every trip to town, (more than likely from the
diesel and auto exhaust), until one day
someone asked me if anything worked to take the
headache away. Ibuprofen works almost every
time for my headaches, so I take 2 Advil BEFORE
I leave to town. No more headaches from my trip.

17. Tender or painful breasts? - I read a study
one day that had a success rate of over 85% with
the women in the study. These women, (like my wife),
suffered from painful tender breasts during their
monthly cycle. In this study, the women avoided
drinking coffee, and the pain in their breasts went
away. I thought, "It can't be that easy,.. can it?"
Donna, (my wife), tried it, and sure enough, that's
all it was. I found out later that coffee is often
processed with solvents, and contains other
impurities as well... so it's not necessarily
the caffeine that was causing it.

I hope this helps some of you as much as it did
me and my wife....

Take care....

Sincerely,

Ron Braithwaite, CNIN

1. Letter from the editor
In light of the aftermath of 9-11-01 I would like to remind anyone
in the area of the attacks to use a allergen airconditoner filter.
Please keep your windows closed due to the dust in the area.
If possible use a hepa vacumn or allergen vacumn cleaner bags
and vacumn at least once a week. Use either a hepa filter or an
air purifier. If you are working in the recovery effort take a shower
or bath before sleeping to wash all the dust off of you. Wear a dust
mask while outside. You won't be one of the few that are doing it.
Even non asthmatics are doing it. Take your medication before
going outside to reduce the effect of the dust on your lungs.
Keep this up till the recovery effort is finished. There are
rumored threats of chemical warfare which is scary for everyone.
They say that the likeliness of pulling this off is very minimal.
Just in case god forbid that we need it I am adding a link to cover
symptoms and such since they are so close to symptoms of asthma.
I feel we need to at least be aware of them. Please continue to pray
for the victims and thier families and continue to support them in
any way that you can. We started bombing the talban today so
please carry your inhaler just in case they retaliate. Even if you do
not feel a need for it. May god bless the world in this time
of crisis. Denise Saylor

4. Allergic reactions to bee stings
***********************************
Allergic Reactions to Bee Stings
by Victoria Ries

Summer is a great time to get out and about in the countryside to
enjoy the sunshine, fresh air, wildflowers and.....bees!

Honeybee, Bumblebee, Wasp, Hornet and Yellow Jacket stings--
all potentially life threatening to those hypersensitive to
Hymenoptera venom, which can cause fatal Anaphylaxis if not
treated within minutes.

Along with localized pain, itching and swelling around the sting
site, victims can experience life threatening, systemic problems
within fifteen minutes to an hour, which may include: hives,
shortness of breath, difficulty breathing, drop in blood pressure,
lethargy, loss of consciousness, bronchospasms, swelling of
larynx/throat, swelling of face, tongue and mouth, shock and
in some cases, death. To temporarily stall Anaphylaxis, it is
vital the victim get an epinephrine shot if symptomatic (every
ten to twenty minutes if necessary, until arrival at hospital)
as Anaphylaxis can, recur between shots. Epinephrine
can save precious minutes of the victim's life in the event of a
severe reaction far from a hospital.

EpiPen and EpiPenJr product information is available at
  http://www.allerex.ca/product.htm

To remove a Honeybee stinger, which looks like a splinter;
gently scrape it out gently with a credit card or fingernail
making sure not to put pressure on the stinger, which will
automatically pump until all venom is released. After
removal, wash site with soap and water and apply an
icepack to reduce swelling. 90% of the venom is released
in the first twenty seconds of the initial sting; the faster
the stinger and venom sac are removed, the better.
The bee will die a short while after stinging you.

Wasps, Hornets, Yellow Jackets and Bumblebees
are able to sting multiple times. On killing a
Yellow Jacket, a scent is released which will attract his
buddies and they will try to attack you. The best line of
defense is to run to the nearest house or a car--an enclosed
shelter of some sort. If a few get trapped in the car with you,
drive a mile away, then get out of the vehicle and let them
out, too. If multiple stings are sustained, seek medical help
immediately.

Cover Up: At the end of the season, the culprits seem to
sting without reason, making it difficult for those with
severe allergic reactions to plan their outdoor activities.
  It is wise to cover as much of the body as possible;
wear solid white or pale colored clothing, long sleeves,
a hat, long pants and socks. Bees are attracted to dark
and floral patterned clothing. Always carry life-saving
epinephrine shots--just in case of an emergency.

BeeGone Spray: For exposed areas, make up a spritzer
bottle of one teaspoon of tea tree essential oil, one
teaspoon of lavender essential oil, one teaspoon of
citronella oil and half a cup of vodka. Firstly, spray it
on the hands then apply to the neck and face,
avoiding the eyes.

Unfortunately, multiple stings do not help desensitize
the effects of Hymenoptera venom; in most cases, it
works the opposite way. Immunotherapy may help
some people. A physician or allergist will provide
full details of available Immunotherapy Programs.

===========================================================
1.Letter from the editor

In light of the New York City and pentagon bombings I felt
obligated to add an Letter from the editor. Our hearts
are with the New York City citizens and we want to let
the fire fighters and Police and all other rescuers
that we are thinking of them. We are also praying for the
families who are missing family and friends. For those
asthmatics and allergy people in the New York City area
and the Washington D.C. area I wanted to make you aware of
the potential of being triggered by this.It may not be in
your home town but the dust and smoke will travel by air.
If you are anywhere close to the area some precautionary
measures that may help. Take extra Allergy medication or
herbs whatever you are taking for your allergies until the
smoke and dust settle.Wear a dust mask until the smoke and
dust settle.Keep all windows closed. Make sure you have a
purifier or hepa running in your house. Buy a central air
unit air filter that is an allergen filter.Stay indoors as
much as possible. If you must go outside for whatever
reason I have found that taking your inhaler or extra
medication before going out in the stuff might help.
I have found by experience it can make a diffrence to
stop it before it starts. You have to be aware that all
of the rescue vehicles will throw up dust for a while.
An dust mask is almost a sure necessity even if you
don't see the dust cloud like what was seen the other
day. Take a shower after returning in from the outdoors
and wash the smoke and dust off of you. If you have a
laundry room that is sealed off from the rest of the
house to keep your dirty clothes in would help.
Keep up the good work and spirits in New York.

Denise Saylor

SOME GENERALLY USEFUL INFO RE ASPIRIN AND ITS RELATIVES

Modern dyes, chemically known as azo dyes, are related to the
natrual salycilates. These natural substances include the
willow bark that American Natives used for treating headache
and other pains, and to dye their clothing.

In 1939 researchers discovered than an azo dye, Prontosil,
would kill bacteria. Prontosil became the first sulfa drug,
so called because the chemical companies figured people
would rather be treated with a drug than with a dye.

Today, allergies to sulfa drugs and to aspirin are widely
attested. German physicians documented so many allergic
reactions to dyes in the early part of this century that
today fewer than 20 chemical substances are approved for
use in European food chemistry.Americans use more than
50,000. Lucky Americans!

In the 1950s Stephen Lockey, M.D., pioneered work in the
United States with the diseases caused by food and drug
additives. He documented allergies to food dyes and to the
chemicals related to salycilates, to aspririn and to sulfa
drugs. He found that hives (urticaria)and MANY OTHER
SYMPTOMS were common reactions.

Many medicines contain dyes for no seeming good purpose
except to be visually distinctive. Mycostatin, for example
is purple with a bright yellow (Tartrazine) inside.Be aware
that when you are allergic, chemicals, even in your
medicine, can be devastating to your well-being. I just
consulted with an old friend whose wife reacted to Aleve
(a relative of aspirin) with anaphylactic shock and came
within a micrometer of dying. No previous history of
allergy.

Asthma Responses To Pollution Lessened With Antioxidants

(InteliHealth) - According to a recent study published in the
Archives of Environmental Health, moderate dosages of vitamins
E and C may reduce the severity of asthma symptoms that
result from air pollution. The study looked at effects of
these vitamins on asthma exacerbations resulting from
exposure to ozone, a major component of air pollution.

2. Apple cider vinegar and garlic

Did you realize there is a lot of various remedies that you
can get from garlic and apple cider vinegar? For an allergy
itch you can bath in vinegar water. For an asthma attack
they say you can make an concentrated mixture in the following
porportions: one clove of garlic(minced) one tsp. vinegar and
one tablespoon of honey.Keep in the refrigirator and take
every 20 minutes until attack subsides. This should enhance
the medications you are taking not replace them.
Try the mixture 1tsp.apple cider vinegar 1 clove garlic finely
chopped 1 cup water and 1 tsp honey(from your state). This
mixture does many things including detoxifaction and for those
asthmatics who started smoking before you found out you had
asthma this should help kick the habit. There are suggestions
like this and many more in the book garlic and vinegar discover
their power. It is on sale at your favorite grocery store now.
They even go into which herbs work best for which elments.

2. Food labels

===============================================

ARE YOUR FOOD LABELS DECEIVING YOU?

Consumers who simply glance at labels before they toss food
into their grocery carts may not be eating what they think
they are. Companies are trying to reposition the same old
line of processed foods as nutritious and healthy by
portraying wholesome ingredients on the fronts of packages,
but not really putting those ingredients in any significant
quantities in the box. Consumers particularly need to watch for
artificial ingredients, rather than the real ingredients the food
packaging suggests.

8. Cleaning and baking soda
===============================================

Two Dozen Uses for Baking Soda
by Irene Zundel

Inexpensive, versatile, and environmentally friendly, baking soda has
a variety of uses.I have compiled
two dozen of them; some you may have never tried before. From
reducing baby's fever to cleaning dentures, and ridding your garden of
pests, baking soda
can be an easy and cheap solution to your problems.

Homemade Scouring Powder
* 1 cup baking soda
* 1 cup borax
* 1 cup salt

Drain Cleaner
* 1 cup baking soda
* add 1 cup hot vinegar
Wait a few minutes, then flush the drain with 1 quart of very hot
water.

For garbage disposals, use 1/4 cup baking soda and 1/2 cup of vinegar.

Automatic Dishwasher Powder
Use 2 tablespoons baking soda and 2 tablespoons borax per load.

Drip Coffeemaker Cleaner
Mix 1cup warm water and 1/4 cup baking soda. Let it drip through the
coffeemaker. Then drip a pot of plain water through to rinse. It will
keep your coffeemaker clean and fresh.

Teapot Cleaner
To remove rust stains and mineral deposits, fill the teapot with water
and add 2 tablespoons of baking soda and the juice of half a
lemon.Boil gently for 15 minutes.Rinse and repeat if needed.

Microwave Cleaning
Make a cleaning solution of 4 tablespoons of baking soda to 1 quart of
warm water.Use it to clean the inside surfaces of the oven.Or, place a
few spoonfuls of baking soda in water in a microwave safe cup. Boil
the water 3-5 minutes. The walls of the microwave will be damp.Simply
take a sponge or paper towel and wipe down the insides of the oven.

Unclog Gas Stoves
To unclog burners on a gas stove, simply add 1/4 box of baking soda to
2 quarts of water and boil for a few minutes.

Easy Toilet Cleaner
Sprinkle 1/2 box of baking soda into the toilet tank once a month. Let
it stand overnight before flushing. The tank and the bowl will be
clean and deodorized.

Economical Air Freshener
Mix equal parts of baking soda with your favorite perfumed bath
salts.Put it in a soap dish or in small sachet bags wherever you would
like to freshen the air.

Economical Carpet Deodorizer
Mix 1/2 cup of baking soda, 1/2 cup of cornstarch, and 15 drops of
essential oil fragrance for scent.Sprinkle on the rugs before bedtime
and let it sit overnight. If you like, you can work it into the carpet
the next morning with a stiff bristle brush or broom. Then vacuum.

Laundry Booster
Add 1/2 cup baking soda to the washing machine along with the usual
amount of liquid laundry soap.It will make whites whiter and colors
brighter. (NOTE: It doesn't work with powdered laundry detergents!).

Clean Brushes and Combs
Fill sink with hot water and 1/4 cup of baking soda. Place brushes
and combs in the water and watch the dirt and oil dissolve away!

Underarm Deodorant
Sprinkle under your arms, even after shaving. It won't irritate your
skin. If you prefer a smoother-textured deodorant, mix it with a
little talcum powder.

Clean Glasses
Hold your eyeglasses over a sink and sprinkle a small amount of baking
soda on them. With wet fingers, gently rub the lenses.Rinse clean and
dry with a soft, lint-free cloth.

Breath Freshener
Sprinkle 1/2 teaspoon of baking soda into a cup of water and rinse. It
will eliminate even morning mouth, garlic and onion odors! Make your
own mouthwash by combining 1 teaspoon of baking soda, 1 teaspoon of
salt, and 1 cup of water. Add a few drops of flavoring if desired.

Tooth Whitener
Mix 1 teaspoon baking soda with 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice.Using a
cotton swab, apply it to your teeth, brush clean with water and rinse.
Coffee and tea stains will disappear! ( NOTE: This is an occasional
treatment only. Lemon juice contains a lot of acid and shouldn't be
overused or used alone. Combined with baking soda,
the acid is buffered and won't destroy the tooth's enamel).

Denture and Retainer Cleaner
Combine 1 tablespoon of baking soda.1 tablespoon of powdered laundry
detergent and 1 cup of water. Soak the dentures or plastic retainer
for 30 minutes and rinse well. If you prefer, you can use 1 cup of
water and 2 teaspoons of baking soda in a glass.

Clear Up a Stuffy Nose
Add a teaspoon of baking soda to your vaporizer. It will unblock nasal
passages and keep the vaporizer clean as well!

Baby Fever Reducer
Bathe the infant in a tub of lukewarm water with 1/2 cup of baking
soda. Use less if you are using a plastic infant tub. This is also an
effective remedy for diaper rash.

For Dogs and Cats
Sprinkle baking soda on your pet's brush or comb to deodorize their
skin and fur. Adding 2 tablespoons of baking soda to your dog's bath
water and rinse water will make their coat clean and shiny. Using
baking soda on pet stains will eliminate the odor and prevent the pet
from returning to the same spot in the future for another
accident. Sprinkling the litter box with baking soda keeps it fresh
and deodorized.

Paint Brushes
To restore brushes stiffened and hardened by paint, boil them in a
solution of 1/2 gallon of water mixed with 1/4 cup vinegar and 1 cup
of baking soda.

Non-toxic Pesticide
Put baking soda under sinks near pipe openings and along basement
windows to repel ants, silver fish and roaches. Roaches will
dehydrate and die after eating baking soda.

In the Garden
Occasionally, lightly sprinkle baking soda around flowerbeds to
prevent rabbits from nibbling at your buds. Sprinkle baking soda on
slugs to get rid of them without having to resort to costly and toxic
pesticides.
To sweeten your tomatoes by reducing their acidity, sprinkle baking
soda lightly on the soil around your tomato plants. The soda from an
old box used to absorb odors in the refrigerator is fine for this
purpose.

Products containing allergens. The purpose of the meeting
is to stimulate discussion and to obtain information to
help FDA determine what additional actions may be necessary
to provide consumers with adequate information on product
labels. The meeting will focus on: Source or plain English
labeling;advisory labeling (e.g., "May contain [name of
food allergen]"); and labeling of ingredients exempted
from declaration (common or usual names of flavorings,
spices, and colors; incidental additives).

The public meeting will be held on August 13, 2001, from
9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Cohen Building, 330 Independence

4.Exercise induced allergies

Here is a part of an article cut from my hometown
newspaper. Exercise induced allergies may need to
be taken in to consideration. Symptoms may include
hives, itching or skin redness. It can start
within a few minutes of exercising and could last
up to an hour or two after exercising. The allergy
is likely triggered by a rise in the body tempeture.
There are two common types of exercise induced allergic
reactions. Chrolinergic urticaria (hives) usually appear
on the neck, chest and arms. Exercise induced
Anaphylaxis can include fatigue, redness, severe itching,
and hives. Some cases involve throat swelling. some of
Using an antihistamine can control these cases
before exercising.

5.Ways to reduce household pet allergens.

This also was an article in my hometown newspaper.
Here are some tips to lower the allergens you are
exposed to in your home.
1.Wash hands after handling the pets.
2.Restrict your pets to certain rooms preferably not
the bedroom.
3. Use allergen resistant covers on your mattress and
  pillows.
4.Wash the sheets weekly in water with a tempeture of
  130 degrees.
5.Reduce the amount of carpet in your house.
6. Avoid dust and dander catching furnishings. ex:
cloth curtains or blinds. or at least wash them
frequently.
7. If you have pets who have a favorite place to
sleep on your furniture cover it with a removable
cover so it can be washed.
8. Use vacuums that are hepas or have at least
allergen bags in them.
9. Use air purification or hepa filters to eliminate
  odors and reduce allergens.
10.Have a non-allergic person bathe the pets weekly.
11. Keep house well ventilated.

6. Apples,pears and lungs
Apples, Pears May Help Protect Lungs...Researchers
in the Netherlands have found that apples, pears
and other fruits rich in certain plant compounds may
help protect the lungs from chronic disease, Reuters
Health reported on July 26. They suspect the benefit
might come from catechins, one of a large group of
plant compounds called flavonoids that has already
been linked to a lower risk of heart disease and
certain cancers, according to the report. The study
appears in the July issue of the American Journal
of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

Rid your bath and shower doors of unsightly limescale
and soap scum~naturally!

Water contains alkaline minerals that build up into
limescale.Couple that with soap scum and you have a
hard hour's scrubbing ahead of you.But it doesn't
have to be that way~let a natural limescale and soap
scum remover do all the work!

Pour 1/4 cup of white distilled vinegar into a spray
bottle along with one cup of water.

Spray all problem areas well. Then sit back with
your favorite beverage and relax for a while. When
you feel like getting out of your comfy chair, rinse
all areas where solution was sprayed, with water.

Reminder: Keep all vinegar solutions out of reach of
children and away from eyes!

5. WERE YOU BREAST FED AS A CHILD?
COLOSTRUM!!

BENEFITS
* Increased energy
* Fights viruses, bacteria, fungus, allergens,
   toxins and parasites
* Protect against autoimmune disease and their symptoms
* Increase protection against heart disease, Alzheimer's
   disease, AIDS and cancer
* Burn fat
* Build lean muscle tissue
* Have brighter moods
* Help balance blood sugar

Medical research has now shown that the most important
immune and growth factors for human adults and children
can be provided by bovine colostrum. Most significantly,
because colostrum is a food rather than a drug, it is
free of toxicity and can be consumed without any
significant side effects.

The book "Colostrum: Mother Nature's Healthy
Alternative for Every Generation!," written by Dr.
Lance S. Wright, introduces readers to the wonders of
colostrum, an incredible healing food which provides an
amazing boost to the body's immune system as well as
aiding in the repair of damage caused by both disease
and aging.

Ideally, the first meal of most infants is colostrum,
the perfect combination of all necessary immune and
growth factors. These elements are not naturally
occurring in such markedly elevated concentrations in
any substance other than colostrum. This critical
pre-milk secretion jump-starts an infant's immune
system and stimulates rapid growth: all in all, it is
estimated that the ingredients in colostrum work to
activate at least fifty different physical processes in
the newborn, all of which are vital to health and
growth.

Robert Preston, N.D., of the International Institute of
Nutritional Research states, "Bovine colostrum is
safe... it is so harmless that it has been prepared by
Nature as the first food for infants, intended as their
total diet for the first 24 hours [of life]."

Those who have used colostrum report an overall sense
of well-being, enhanced sexual performance, decreased
body fat, improved immune function (thus providing
greater defense against cardiovascular disease,
strokes, Alzheimer's disease, HIV and AIDS, cancer, and
other common illnesses), sharpened memory, diminished
wrinkles, hair regrowth, elevated energy levels,
increased muscle strength and mass, heightened stamina,
mood brightening, magnified healing capacity, and
increased spinal flexibility. Medical studies show that
colostrum contains powerful growth and immune factors,
which improve arthritic conditions, help fight a host
of pathogens, and aid in regulating blood sugar
(thereby assisting those who are diabetic or
hyperglycemic). Furthermore, colostrum is rich in TgF-,
which not only supplements cancer therapy and catalyzes
bone reformation, but also contains large amounts of
immunoglobulins shown to act as anti-viral,
anti-allergen, anti-bacterial, anti-yeast and
anti-toxin combatants.

tired of deleting them all. So I know everone else had to be. This way
my group gets the same informtion and less emails.Bear with me I am
new at this. So if anything doesn't do what it is supposed to please
feel free to let me know. If there is any thing I don't cover in the
newsletter you would like to see please feel free to ask.
I will put all of my food allergy alerts in this newsletter. Along
with articles I would like to share with you. This newsletter is
longer than most of them will be. The last article is very long but I
felt It needed to be posted. If you know of something that may bother
allergies or asthma that the general population may not be aware of
please let me know. Ex: sulfites, red dye 40, asprin.
    I also have a list 4Allergies-Asthma@yahoogroups.com. I would also
like to post some recipe ideas for anyone with food allergies. If you
have any please send them to me. Thanks. Denise

Sulfite Facts

               "The Chemicals That We Eat"

From a speech given by Karleen Page in 1988)

Vicki Peterson in The Natural Foods Catalog states that the average
American eats 4 pounds of food additives a year. That is equivalent to
20-30 aspirin-sized tablets of chemicals per day. There have been at
least 17 people who have died from ingesting sulfite, according to
Chris Lecos in FDA Consumer, March 1988. One of them was a 12-year-old
girl who did not know she had an allergy to sulfites. She ate some
guacamole dip, immediately lost consciousness and then died.
Sulfites are listed on food lables by the following names:
         sulfur dioxide
         sodium sulfite
         sodium and potassium bisulfite
         sodium and potassium metabisulfite
         "sulfiting agent"
         "contains sulfites"

The presence of sulfites in food items are measured in parts per
million (ppm). That's 1 part sulfite to 100,000 parts of food--the
equivalent of a drop of water in a bathtub. I have reacted to as low
as 10 ppm. Lecos reported an asthmatic who died from eating cottage
fries in a restaurant, tested at 96 ppm of sulfite.Another asthmatic
died from eating hash browns tested at 242 ppm. Another reported case
of sulfite allergy was a person who did not die but was in a coma for
3 weeks and sustained severe motor and neurological damage - the
food tested at 1390 ppm.For an example of sulfite levels in food,
consider this chart:
Average Sulfite Levels in Potato Products
                       Frozen 15 to 250 ppm
                       Dehydrated 50 to 700 ppm
                       Refrigerated 30 to 1400 ppm
The use of sulfites has been considered safe by the FDA since 1958
when they were put on the GRAS list (Generally Recognized As Safe). In
1958, Congress enacted the Food Additives Amendment to theFederal
Food, Drug & Cosmetic Act to ensure the safety of additives. The GRAS
list " grandfathered in" many common additives that have NEVER been
tested. These include over 650 substances whose use is based on "logic
and common sense". In 1960, the Color
Additive Amendment was added to make surecoloringsare safe for food
use. The Delaney Clause states that if an additive causes cancer in
humans or animals, it cannot be added to food, for example,
cyclamates. However, food additive testing may be doneby or for the
company that wants to sell or use the additive In 1986 the FDA banned
sulfites on fresh fruits, or vegetables EXCEPT for potatoes. However
restaurants sometimes ILLEGALLY use a "potato wash" to keep foods
fresh, which contains, you guessed it sulfites. In 1987 the FDA
ordered manufacturers to list sulfites on food labels if the product
contains more than 10 ppm of sulfites, and required that drugs
containing sulfites contain a warning label. There is no known "safe
level" for individuals, however. From 1982 to 1988, the FDA has
received more than 1,400 complaints about sulfites. In 1985, the FDA
formed the Adverse Reaction Monitoring System to investigate these
complains. The chart below shows the dispersion of complaints received
Adverse Reaction Monitoring System Complaints 1982-1988
80% Aspartame (mainly headaches from drinking soft drinks)
     15% Sulfites
5% Other, including MSG, emulsifier polysorbate, nitrate
preservatives, some dyes and vitamin supplements This chart shows the
breakdown of sulfite complaints:
Adverse Reaction Monitoring System Sulfite Complaints 1982-1988
47% Salad bar, fresh fruit and vegetables
                12% Potato Products
                12% Wine
                3% Drugs
Estimates of the number of sulfite allergic or sensitive individuals
vary. Chris Lecos in the FDA Consumer,March, 1988 states that an
estimated 1 million peopleare sulfite sensitive, primarily asthma
sufferers. Other estimates say 1 in 100 people are sulfite sensitive,
which would make it on the order of 2.5 million. Judy Folkenberg (FDA
Consumer 10-88) states that 10% of the population is allergic to
sulfites. 50% of sulfite reactions are considered serious, causing
difficulty breathing or seizures. According to her article, "Reporting
Reactions to Additives", as many as 27 individuals may have died from
sulfite reactions. Why do manufacturers put sulfites in food? They
will give you all kinds of reasons, but the bottom line is that it
makes food last longer and thus increases profits. Basically, it is an
antioxidant, which means it keeps food from turning brown. Therefore
you should be suspicious of any food that should normally turn brown
when exposed to air, but doesn't: including apples, apple products,
potatoes (raw, chips, processed, frozen, dried, etc), coconut,
marshmallows, wines, beer, white grape juice - the list goes on.
In the article, "A Primer on Food Additives" in the October,
1988 issue of FDA Consumer, it states that "the food additive industry
generates approximately $10 billion a year in business according to
Dr. Richard Hall, a former vice president of McCormick Spices." Most
processed foods have an average of 40 flavorings added to them. And
many of them are still not listed on labels.Supposedly it is illegal
to put sulfites on anything but potatoes without labeling it on the
product. In 1986,the FDA ordered that they not be added to any fresh
fruits or vegetables, except for potatoes. In 1987, the FDA ordered
manufacturers to list the presence of sulfites on labeling. They are
proposing to ban it on potato products. But sulfites in small amounts
are undetectable by our senses, so how can you tell if a product is
contaminated or not? According to Vicki Peterson in The Natural Foods
Catalog, common symptoms associated with food and additive allergies
are:
1.Persistent fatigue, not helped by rest.
2.Over or under weight, or history of fluctuation.
3.Occasional puffiness of face, hands, abdomen, or ankles.
      4.Heart palpitations, especially after eating.
5.Excessive sweating not related to exercise.
Of course there are other preservatives besides sulfites
that are harmful (and that I am allergic to). I was diagnosed with
MCS in about 1990 - which stands for Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.
The syndrome is also called EI for Environmental Illness. In addition
to sulfites, yellow dye, and other food additive and preservative, I
react to herbicides, fungicides, pesticides, some perfumes, cigarette
smoke, formaldehyde, and other "modern" environmental toxins.. Makes
life fun in our current toxic environment. Isn't chemistry a wonderful
thing? Most foods are treated with mold inhibitors, fungicides,
herbicides and pesticides before food processors ever get a hold of
them. Most processed foods have an average of 40 flavorings added to
them. Although labeling has come a long way, there are still many
things that are not disclosed to us on the packaging. Click here for a
copy of a newspaper article about the subject, including a piece about
yours truly. In conclusion,Dr. MacKarness of the UK estimates that no
less than 30% of all ill people have symptoms caused by food or
chemical allergy. Another 30% are partly traceable to the same cause.
That means that over half of the patients treated by an average
doctor endure pain, disease and surgical procedures which they could
avoid by simply not eating certain foods (from the Natural Foods
Catalog by Vicki Peterson).
