As most of you know, I recently started working for Big Brothers Big
Sisters of Greater Fairbanks. It is a challenging job and oh I do not
like that new job learning curve. BUT, it is a job that I am finding
personally satisfying in that we are making a difference in childrens'
lives, as well as the adults' who are their "Bigs".
Our main fundraiser for the year, Bowling For Kids' Sake, is coming up
quickly. Here is your opportunity to suppport us. The three of us who
make up the Rural Department have formed a team, BBBS Bush Babes, and
are trying to raise $2000 or more. If you would like to see our last
(and my first) visit to a rural Alaskan bush community, you can see my

The Big Brothers Big Sisters Vision is successful mentoring
relationships for all children who need and want them, contributing to
better schools, brighter futures, and stronger communities for all.
The Big Brothers Big Sisters Mission is to help children reach their
potential through professionally supported, one-to-one relationships
with measurable impact.
The most compelling evidence shows that Little Brothers and Little
Sisters are:
**46% less likely to begin using illegal drugs;
*27% less likely to begin using alcohol;

I've heard Dr. Newman before and he is a really wonderful speaker.
Enjoy,
Georganne
Dr. Jack Newman will be speaking on December 7 @ 6:30 at the BP Energy
Center. His topic will be focused on the benefits of breastfeeding,
particularly past the early months. I heard a version of this talk in
July and it is NOT to be missed by those who understand the value of
breastfeeding and why it is normal for a toddler to breastfeed. It is
also very good for those who aren't yet convinced (such as first time
dads, new Grandmas, etc :-)).
It is an incredible opportunity to hear one of the most respected
breastfeeding experts in the world. Dr. Newman is the author of The
Ultimate Breastfeeding Book of Answers and is a very popular speaker at
La Leche League conferences and other breastfeeding conferences and
forums. And we get to hear him for free, courtesy of Alaska
Breastfeeding Coalition!

As all of you, I was shocked to learn of Pam's death. I am
heartbroken. She was such a encouraging person in my life. Whenever I
would get tired of trimming posts, she would urge me to take a break and
let them sit. She was encouraging to me in other parts of my life as
well, as I am sure she was to many others who she communicated with off
list. She was alway appreciative of her moderators and never missed a
chance to thank us. This list means a lot to me and I know that it and
members on it, meant even more to Pamela. Even though she has been
quiet and not very active on the list lately taking care of different
things in her life, she was reading the list and thinking of you all.
I have been off line for several days as I am moving. I just got the
phone turned on here in the new house today. After reading my email at
work this morning I left and came home and my husband made a special
trip out to our old house to bring my computer in to me so I could share
in our grieving. I talked to George Sr. and Debby this morning as well
as George Jr.s very nice wife Charlene. My heart goes out to all of
them and as well to Keith.
I would like to take up a collection to go towards Pamela's family so
they can buy tickets to come up here. Please contact me off list if you
would like to contribute. I know that the airlines give a break to
people flying due to a death in the family but I don't know any details
or how to go about looking into that even. If anyone already knows, I
would appreciate some help gathering information. As per my
conversation with Debby this morning, we will of course keep the list
open. Pamela had paid for her domain name for a long time in the future
so that will be staying up at least until her domain name runs out. Of
course, it wont have Pamela to make the constant updates to it...
I will keep you all posted on when the funeral is and any other
information I can.

To the folks that frequent the Alaska Living site:
This is Pamela's Dad in southern Indiana:
Last night, Thurs September 22, 2005, I talked to Keith Upton who is
staying
in the West Mark Inn, Fairbanks, AK. His cell phone is 907.388.2095.
This
is a condensed version of what he told me: Wed Sep 21, 2005, he went
back
to work at Golden Valley to help them out. (He retired at the end of
July
from there). It is not unusual for Pamela to work on her sites all
night
long and sleep during the day. Keith came home from work and found
the
house full of acrid smoke and found that the wood stove in the
basement had
malfunctioned. He ran upstairs to check on Pamela and found her
collapsed
on the floor in the hallway. He pulled her outside onto the deck,
gave mouth
to mouth and called 911. They arrived and was unable to revive her.
She
has been sent to Anchorage for an autopsy. No arrangements have been
finalized. George in Southern Indiana.

Georganne,
Did you ever decide on a book? The SB, with a little help from 7 Bad Habits
of Carbohydrate Addicts is working well for me. Iım down approximately nine
pounds. I need to start moving and have not begun any exercise. But I feel
better losing weight.
Kelly
[Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
Georganne,
Time is a huge issue in dieting, imo. Another book I highly, highly
recommend is The Carbohydrate Addict's 7-Day Plan. It's very helpful and
pertinent no matter what low-carb diet you follow i.e. Atkins, South Beach,
etc. In fact, I think you can do a combination of these diets if you use
the principles explained in the book above as a guideline to changing your
eating habits. It explains important things about hidden carbs, how diet
and sugar substitute's trigger cravings, and that you can have high-carb
foods you enjoy if you balance them with the right amount of protein, as
well as watch the frequency and portions. I am addicted to diet soda. There
is no question about it. I believe I will have to quit these completely and
it is not a detox I look forward to, but I'm sure it does not help my health
or cravings to drink them. The key is to eat and drink the foods that
decrease the unhealthy cravings - to disrupt the insulin surges that start
the vicious cycle to start with...
Anyway, there are some great recipes out there. If you can find time on the
weekend, maybe you can make most of your food for the week ahead of time. I
have always avoided food preparation and then when I was crashing would wolf
down anything in sight, always high carb. Not a breakfast eater either.
Anyway, check that book out for sure!
The book also talks about how we put everything/everyone else ahead of
ourselves and the importance of putting our needs, like a healthy diet,
first.
Anyway, blithering away here! I know that, in order to maintain a good
weight, not to mention getting there, I have to get off the sugar
substitutes and eat protein and good carbs BEFORE I reach for the bad carbs
or I'll never get off the merry-go-round.

That's my main nemisis, time. I have no spare time! I am trying to
move back into town so when that happens I will have over an hour extra
time that is currently spent driving!

Wow! Congrats on the diet success! Daily exercise is a real challenge for
me. I am taking baby steps. Right now losing to my target weight is the
priority, adding exercise comes next. My plan is to use Richard Hittleman's
Yoga 28 Day Exercise Plan. It's really cool and eases you into fitness as
well as promises a loss of ten pounds at the end of the 28 days just from
following the 28 day program. It has photos and walks you through each
pose, which is added to as well as varied each day of the 28 until you end
up limber and with the memory of enough yoga poses to do different complete
routines of your choice from then on that are more advanced. I have done it
before and it worked for me because it's something I can do at home once per
day in the house and it is easy and leaves me feeling good about myself,
relaxed, and energized at the same time.
Anyway, that will be the next step in my fitness/health plan. I do like to
ride bikes and the bike path here in Homer was completed about a month ago.
I've had so many visitors I haven't taken advantage of it and have only used
it once. But it is part of my future plans next summer because I love
riding bikes. My hubby wants to buy a stationary bike stand that you can
sit your real bike on and pedal in the house and I think that will be phase
3 once I've completed the 28 day yoga plan. I will then move into regular
bike pedaling (indoors) and continue doing a daily yoga routine. THEN if it
ever snows, we hope to cross-country ski in the heart of winter.
All for now folks! Yeah, btw, I do think SB adds good carbs sooner than
Atkins. Actually it keeps good carbs in from the beginning whereas Atkins
puts you on relatively NO carbs for the first wekk or two (20grams only!)
So all you can eat is protein and maybe a small serving of green beans or
some green vegetable.
All for now.
Didn't eat much today. Didn't feel hungry all day. Had a wonderful tomato
based seafood soup for dinner and am making myself a cup of hot tea about
now.
Kelly
From what I hear, South Beach allows Good carbs in their diet.. Atkins try to
eliminate as much Carbs as possible. Other than that, I don't know what else is
different.
I have actually done really well this summer. Today I had to go shopping for
new jeans as none of mine fit anymore :oD (Nice problem to have eh..) It's taken
over a year but I went from a size 20 pants to a size 12.
Anyone else dreading the winter as far as excercising and dieting goes?? It
seem a lot harder to stay motivated to stay on track in the winter. I've been
biking at least 2 days a week on the bike path near Chena lakes. I need to get
as much of that in as possible before the snow comes.
How will you be staying active this winter??? I use excercise videos and I have
a stationary bike so that will help in the winter. But I would like to do *some*
outdoor winter fun too.

The Atkins diet is, imo, so far, less healthy than South Beach but SB takes
more effort in terms of preparation - then again the food is more attractive
and tasty because more effort has been put into it. But Atkins works great
and I lost fifteen pounds on it. I think in the long term SB may be better
because of more variety in the food.

Diet cola
Diet cream soda

I wish ya'll success on your diets. I know how hard it is to get away from
foods that call to you. Actually donuts are not that big a problem for me.
I shouldn't be eating them because they have wheat in them. While I was
at my Mom's, my aunt made some cinnamon rolls, and I couldn't resist. Boy!
Did I pay dearly for that setback.

My stationary bike is sitting in my diningroom. I can see it from
almost everywhere so it continually reminds me to get on it! As long
as I can peddle happily along reading some juicy movie magazine, I do
well. But when I've gone through the People magazine, as well as the
2 others then that's when I don't want to bicycle. I have to
though..... to avoid getting stiff, I have to keep moving.

fitday.com is a free excellent way to record everything you're eating
so you can see if there's something in your daily diet that is a bit
more high in calories than you'd like and then you can omit it, etc.
This website will also let you enter your daily exercise as well as a
daily journal and daily weight.
Moe, that's awesome that you have lost 4 pounds.
I got waylaid last weekend and ate badly that entire weekend so I
rapidly picked up 2 pounds. I'll have to really try to break that 177
pound barrier that I'm on.
I hate to give up everything I like... I've given alot of it up and
switched it for something less caloric.
