Georganne,
Time is a huge issue in dieting, imo. Another book I highly, highly
recommend is The Carbohydrate Addict's 7-Day Plan. It's very helpful and
pertinent no matter what low-carb diet you follow i.e. Atkins, South Beach,
etc. In fact, I think you can do a combination of these diets if you use
the principles explained in the book above as a guideline to changing your
eating habits. It explains important things about hidden carbs, how diet
and sugar substitute's trigger cravings, and that you can have high-carb
foods you enjoy if you balance them with the right amount of protein, as
well as watch the frequency and portions. I am addicted to diet soda. There
is no question about it. I believe I will have to quit these completely and
it is not a detox I look forward to, but I'm sure it does not help my health
or cravings to drink them. The key is to eat and drink the foods that
decrease the unhealthy cravings - to disrupt the insulin surges that start
the vicious cycle to start with...
Anyway, there are some great recipes out there. If you can find time on the
weekend, maybe you can make most of your food for the week ahead of time. I
have always avoided food preparation and then when I was crashing would wolf
down anything in sight, always high carb. Not a breakfast eater either.
Anyway, check that book out for sure!
The book also talks about how we put everything/everyone else ahead of
ourselves and the importance of putting our needs, like a healthy diet,
first.
Anyway, blithering away here! I know that, in order to maintain a good
weight, not to mention getting there, I have to get off the sugar
substitutes and eat protein and good carbs BEFORE I reach for the bad carbs
or I'll never get off the merry-go-round.
