Bombs should burst in the air, not on the ground :)
As we passed celebrate July 4th, many of us commemorated our nation's
independence by watching fireworks and singing patriotic songs such as the
"Star-Spangled Banner."
Residents of south Lebanon have other, deadlier fireworks of their own to deal
with. Three years after the war between Israel and Hezbollah, thousands of
unexploded cluster bomblets dropped by Israel remain on the ground, waiting for
unsuspecting children or farmers to accidentally set them off.
Since August 2006 these bomblets have killed 21 Lebanese civilians and injured
204, many permanently.
Many more people will be maimed or killed unless these bomblets are meticulously
removed and destroyed by trained deminers. The task of clearing bomblets is
dangerous. In the last three years, 14 deminers have been killed and 43 have
been wounded while doing their life-saving work in south Lebanon.
Clearing bomblets is also costly. The United Nations Mine Action Service
estimates that without more funding they will be forced to halt operations by
the end of this month.
To address the funding shortfall, we launched a campaign to raise funds for the
Mines Advisory Group (MAG). The U.S. Department of State has joined us in the
campaign. If we can raise up to $100,000, the State Department has agreed to
contribute 2-to-1 up to $200,000 to the effort. Every dollar that you donate to
ATFL

becomes three dollars that goes to saving innocent lives. That means that If we
reach our goal of raising $100,000, the resulting $300,000 donation would allow
ten demining teams to work for an entire month clearing bomblets in south
Lebanon.
In response to ATFL's appeal to save lives by clearing cluster bomblets, ATFL
has received more than $38,000 in generous donations in less than a month. Thank
you! This support has us brought us almost 40% of the way to our goal of raising
$100,000.
There is still time to donate. For every additional dollar you donate up to
$62,000, your donation will be increased three-fold. That means that your
donation of $145 would become a donation of $435, which would allow one demining
team to clear bomblets for half of a day. A donation of $350 would allow them to
operate for an entire day.
With your help, the only fireworks in Lebanon next July 4th will be those set
off in support of American-Lebanese friendship. To make a bomblet-free Lebanon a
reality, we need your support now so that the clearing operations can continue.
Please donate as generously as you can.

P.S.: I am traveling to Lebanon next week and intend to meet with MAG
representatives to tell them personally about the success we have had so far in
our campaign. I will also be able to tell them about any donations that you make
between now and when I leave, so you can even make a donation this weekend.
P.P.S.: To see our first campaign email, signed by our chairman, Hon. Thomas A.
Nassif, and three members of Congress, Nick Rahall, Darrell Issa, and Charles
Boustany, click here.
