Viva la Causa! premieres in September
SPLC's Teaching Tolerance program will unveil a new documentary film
and teaching kit, Viva la Causa!, that focuses on one of the seminal
events in the march for human rights — the grape strike and boycott
led by César Chávez and Dolores Huerta in the 1960s. Viva la Causa!
will be delivered free to classrooms this fall and will help counter
the burgeoning anti-Latino sentiment in our country by teaching
millions of schoolchildren that they can choose respect over bigotry.

Holocaust denier interviewed in new video
Max Blumenthal, a writer for The Nation, teamed up with the Southern
Poverty Law Center to produce a video about author David Irving, an
infamous British Holocaust denier who has been speaking across the
U.S. after his release from an Austrian prison. During the interview,
Irving strongly defends Hitler and blames Jews for their own
persecution.

SPLC represents victim of racial profiling
Victor Marquez was traveling through Alabama to his hometown in
Mexico to pay for a house when a police officer pulled him over and
confiscated almost $20,000. The officer claimed, without any
evidence, that it was drug money.

We're representing Marquez as he tries to recover the money he saved
from harvesting beans in South Florida for almost a decade. "The
Latino community should not have to worry that their legitimately
earned wages and dreams of building a home and better life can be
taken away on a whim," said Mary Bauer, director of SPLC's Immigrant
Justice Project.

Reducing dropout rates in Alabama
As we did in Mississippi, we're working to decrease the high student
and teacher dropout rates in Alabama with our new report, Effective
Discipline for Student Success: Reducing Student and Teacher Dropout
Rates in Alabama. Schools that have implemented the methods have seen
marked improvement in student behavior. We're working to curb the
number of students being pushed into the juvenile justice system, or
a path known as the "school-to-prison pipeline."
