Hiroshima to Sec Priorities: Reduce nukes; redirect resources
From Hiroshima to Security Priorities
Reduce nukes; redirect resources to real security measures

http://capwiz.com/wand/issues/alert/?alertid=11732546&type=CO

As we commemorate the horrible nuclear bombings of Hiroshima and
Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, let us also be spurred on by new hope of
achieving a nuclear weapons-free world.

----------------------------------------------------------------------
----------
Recently, former Secretaries of State George Shultz and Henry
Kissinger, former Secretary of Defense William Perry, and former Sen.
Sam Nunn articulated their vision of a nuclear weapons-free world,
and advocated for leadership from the United States in "practical
measures toward achieving this goal." This idea from these thinkers
is stimulating renewed momentum for nuclear disarmament.

Right now, bi-partisan support is building in Congress for House
Resolution 1045: the Global Securities Priorities Resolution. This
Resolution urges the President to take steps to reduce the number of
U.S. and Russian nuclear weapons, with cost savings from these
reductions to be redirected to support true global security
priorities (including nuclear nonproliferation programs, and critical
child survival, hunger, and education programs around the world that
help address the root causes of terrorism).

Imagine: saving money by reducing dangerous stockpiles of nuclear
weapons and putting that money into efforts that really will make us
safer.

Please write to your member of Congress, urging support for H.Res.
1045 – the Global Securities Priorities Resolution.

Also, this August your Member of Congress will be home and almost
certainly will be hosting town hall meetings and other events. If you
would like to participate in efforts to use these opportunities to
urge support of this Resolution and weigh in on other nuclear
disarmament and security issues, please contact Kathy Robinson, WAND
Public Policy Field Director.
