Welcome to the new Faces of Hope newsletter. I hope you like the new
format.
Thank you for your generous support of our crisis fund to aid those
caught in the crossfire during the recent fighting in the Middle
East. You have made a difference! So far, AFSC has raised thousands
of dollars to support projects in Lebanon, Gaza and Israel.
In addition, your voices have been important in challenging U.S.
policy. We need to continue to pressure the U.S. government to
respect the ceasefire in Lebanon, and work to end the violence in
Gaza.
Below you will find opportunities to learn more about life in
Palestine, Israel and Lebanon. I especially hope you can join us in
Israel and Palestine this November to see first-hand the inspiring
work being done for a peaceful future.
Peace,
Adam Horowitz

Olive Harvest Delegation - November 4-18, 2006
Join the American Friends Service Committee and Interfaith Peace-
Builders this fall and travel to Israel/Palestine. This delegation
provides an excellent opportunity to participate in the Palestinian
olive harvest—generally a time of great community activism, where
people of all ages from Palestine, Israeli peace and justice groups,
and international groups join farmers as they reap their harvest.
In many cases, it's international support that makes the harvest
possible. In addition to expressing solidarity, participants in the
delegation will learn about obstacles to the harvest, and get a
chance to meet those working for peace in Israel and Palestine.

Voices from Lebanon
In 2004, the AFSC Middle East youth program coordinator and Arab
young people explored a means for their peers in the Middle East to
connect with one another directly. From their efforts, the Middle
East Regional Youth Action Network-MERYAN was born.
Many of MERYAN members in Lebanon are engaged in humanitarian
efforts by volunteering or working with local organizations and
institutions. Their accounts provide moving and insightful
perspectives on recent events, and their hopes for Lebanon as their
homeland recovers from war.

While the world's attention has been fixed on Lebanon, Israel has
continued its two-month siege on Gaza following the capture of
Israeli Corporal Gilad Shalit on June 25. So far, Israel's attack on
the civilian infrastructure of Gaza has left 860,000 people without
power or water. These acts of collective punishment fall hardest on
those most vulnerable: the children, the elderly, the sick.
Ask the White House, State Department, and Congress to resolve the
conflict in Gaza >
