MS Advocates Successfully Push for Medicare Independent Living Act
MS advocates helped build momentum in the Senate, and legislation
that would fix Medicare's "in the home" restriction on mobility
devices has finally been proposed. Thank you to everyone who
contacted their senators. The Medicare Independent Living Act of 2006
(S. 3677) would lift the "in the home" restriction on mobility
devices and allow Medicare beneficiaries to obtain wheelchairs or
scooters for use inside and outside the home. Senators Bingaman (D-
NM), Santorum (R-PA), Murray (D-WA), Collins (R-ME), Akaka (D-HI),
Jeffords (I-VT), Lieberman (D-CT), Kerry (D-MA), Harkin (D-IA), and
Kennedy (D-MA) all co-sponsored the bill. Even if people with MS need
little or no assistance at home, they still might need help traveling
to work, the physician's office, or a place of worship. Currently,
Medicare only will cover mobility devices if beneficiaries need them
for use inside their homes. The Public Policy Office will work with
Senate staff to bring S. 3677 to the Senate floor for a vote and will
provide the MS Action Network with updates and calls to action when
needed.
