I think the concern I'd heard in the past was that,
lacking minerals, the water would bind with minerals
in the body and end up chelating them away. I don't
know if there is any validity for that or not.

I've heard both sides, that it is needed, and that it
isn't. :) But from what I heard, that was the
reasoning behind it - stripping minerals from your
body.
