Hey All;
My partner and I have been playing around with the raw milk thing.
We've tried the Wright's dairy milk, but I was not impressed with
their pasturized (but not homogenized) product. I mostly just quit
"doing" dairy, except for raw milk cheese (which we can get from Sweet
Home Farm in Elberta) and kefir very occasionally.
We've been using coconut oil and olive oil almost exclusively (Pat
does cook with butter sometimes) and I do feel even that much of a
change is helpful. I've read "Nourishing Traditions" and want to try
some of the recipes in there, it's difficult because we don't really
have a kitchen right now (combination of renovation and unresolved
hurricane damage)
Recently I had occasion to go to Wichita KS on a business trip and I
got on the realmilk.com website to see if there was the possibility of
finding raw milk in the area. I found Kenneth King, who sells milk &
butter from his Jerseys. We came back to AL with 8 gallons of milk
(well, really 7, since we finished 1 on the drive back), 8 lbs of
butter, and 1.5 lbs of cheese curds (his oldest son is experimenting
with cheese-making). The cheese curds are excellent, BTW. He doesn't
like to ship, but if you know someone up that way, the quality is
excellent (as is the price).
Now I'm well and truly "hooked". I can't see driving to Kansas to get
milk, though. I know there is product available in other (closer)
states but thought I'd check and see what others are doing or maybe if
there's a group in AL similar to the raw dairy buying group in Atlanta.
