Subject: Introduction to Living with ALS: India
Hello,
My name is Gaurav Jain and I live in India, Asia.
My Father passed away last month after suffering with ALS for almost
2 years.
In India, we do not have a support system available which can take
care of rare diseases like MND or for that matter other diseases.
The focus in the country is primarily on mass diseases like AIDS,
Cancer, Brain tumours etc.
I started a virtual Organisation by the name " Living with ALS:
India" in October, 07 with a view that providing information and
awareness to people suffering with this disease and their care
takers in India is of utmost importance. The link to the same is:
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/ALS_India/
Once we have succeeded in achieving this task, we would want to
start a physical organisation which can help people by providing a
support system to deal with issues pertaining to ALS, especially
things like sourcing medicines, nursing care, equipment sourcing,
emotional support and a support group to express ideas and promote
interaction.
The organisation at its present stage is very small (8 members) but
we are increasing in number which makes me very happy as the
awareness is spreading.
I would request you to kindly acknowledge this organisation from
India in your International Alliance of ALS/MND Associations and
help us in spreading awareness towards this disease and its
consequences.
Let's not forget that unlike US or even developed European
countries, we in India still do not have Medical Insurance companies
or even Government support in providing aids to patients suffering
with ALS.
Like I said in the beginning, it's not as common as AIDS or Cancer
and hence no one cares to think about it.
But there needs to be a start and that's what we are trying to do.
Best regards,
Gaurav Jain
