Hello PATH State Contacts and Providers, Below is the announcement for
an upcoming SAMHSA teleconference for bilingual individuals whose job
duties include interpretation in mental health settings. The
teleconference is titled "Language Interpreting in Mental Health
Settings" and it will be offered on September 22 and November 10, 2008
at 1:00-3:00PM (EST).

See below or visit https://www.humrro.org/webinar/
<https://www.humrro.org/webinar/> for more information.

The Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA)
Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS) is continuing its efforts to
address disparities in mental health care across America. This effort
is in response to the President's New Freedom Commission Report,
Achieving the Promise: Transforming Mental Health Care in America , and
the subsequent, Federal Action Agenda: First Steps . The overall goal
of this initiative is to develop and implement strategies that will
facilitate the elimination of disparities across the life span.

There is no question that cultural and linguistic competence is critical
to the provision of mental health services and is an important strategy
to reduce disparities in care. Census data reveals that the demographics
of the population in the United States are changing, and that there are
increases in individuals who experience Limited English Proficiency
(LEP). Such information has resulted in additional Federal mandates for
equal access to health care and mental health care services, and has
prompted new laws, regulations and standards. One area of focus has
been to expand and improve access to language interpretation in health
care settings.

Through the Eliminating Mental Health Disparities (EMHD) Initiative,
CMHS promotes the use of translation and interpretation services. As
part of this effort, Sebastian Lantos Consulting will be presenting a
Web-based training on "Language Interpreting in Mental Health Settings."
This training is geared towards individuals who are bilingual in Spanish
and English and whose work requires them to interpret in mental health
settings. Two sessions are being offered: September 22 and November
10, 2008 at 1:00-3:00PM (EST). For registered participants, printed
material will be sent in advance that provide information about the
interpreting industry, including HIPAA, CLAS standards and
terminologies, etc. Trainings will address the following:

* Terminology used by mental health communities
* Basics of professional interpreting
* Code of professional conduct
* Understanding HIPAA

To register for either event, please click on the link below for
additional information and to complete and submit the registration form.
Please note that acceptance in the training is on a first-come basis and
is limited to 40 participants. You will be notified of your acceptance
and provided with additional information. If you have questions,
please contact Julisara Mathew at 703.706.5613 or jmathew@... .
