Subject: Education code change
This is a reminder that TOMORROW, FRIDAY AUGUST 1st is the last day to
comment on the state's plan to extend the amount of time that schools
have to make children eligible for special education services.
If you want to provide input to the State Department of Education (SDE)
on this proposed change, email your comments to Crystal Richardson
(
crystalr@...) before tomorrow afternoon.
If you've already sent the SDE your comments, please consider forwarding
them to your State Board of Education representative. (For you
convenience, I have attached a district map and contact information for
the Board.) The Board meets to vote on the SDE's recommendations on
Monday, August 4 @ 9:30 in the Gordon Persons Auditorium in Montgomery.
Your representative would benefit from knowing how you feel about the
matter.
As a refresher, here's a summary of the proposed code change:
Under the present rule, a school has a total of 90 days to evaluate a
child and implement an IEP if the child is eligible for services.
Under the proposed rule, a school would have up to 120 days.
ADAP is troubled by this proposed change, believing it will hurt
children with disabilities, unnecessarily delaying the provision of
special education services for eligible children. The attached letter
discusses the proposed rule in more detail.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact ADAP at
1.800.826.1675 or via email at
nanderso@... or
tmcgee@....
Please excuse us at ADAP if you get this message more than once.
Please consider forwarding it on to persons who you think would be
interested in this matter.
Best regards,
Nancy
