Workshop Announcement: Psychological Testing and Assessments for Deaf
and Hard of Hearing Students/Adults

This training is geared toward interpreters, therapists, educators,
social workers, counselors, and other professionals and consumers
wishing to understand and apply psychological assessment test results to
the deaf population. The training will provide an overview of critical
variables and issues in appropriately understanding, testing, and
interpreting deaf and hard of hearing individuals in a variety of
contexts. The main goal of this workshop is to understand the issues and
challenges facing clinicians working with interpreters with emphasis on
examining and comparing the different instruments for qualities,
administration, and interpretation. This workshop is open to anyone
seeking a greater understanding of social, psychological, and
developmental issues as they relate to Deaf and Hard of Hearing
individuals. Information on interventions and supportive resources shall
also be covered and shared.
This training also includes a tour of the Bailey Deaf Unit, catered
lunch, and an opportunity to participate in an expert forum.
COST OF TRAINING
Daily rate: $50
.75 (7.5 contact hours) CES/CEUS will be available for Interpreters,
Psychologists, Social Workers, and Counselors. The Alabama Department
of Mental Health and Mental Retardation maintains responsibility for
this program and its content.
Steven Hardy-Braz received his graduate training in school psychology at
Gallaudet University in developmental psychology. While currently a
consultant to numerous school systems around the country, he previously
worked as a school psychologist at the Eastern North Carolina School for
the Deaf and worked with deaf, deaf blind, and multihandicapped
students. In 1999 he was North Carolina School Psychology Association
Practitioner of the Year, and in 2001 he was Gallaudet University's
Outstanding Young Alumnus. Currently, he is the President of the North
Carolina School Psychology Association, the recent South Eastern
Regional Institute on Deafness's Outstanding Educator of the Year, and
the co-coordinator of the National Association of School Psychologists'
Interest Group on students who are deaf or hard of hearing and their
families. He has conducted workshops and trainings nationally and
internationally and is a nationally certified school psychologist
skilled in American Sign Language. He has provided state, regional, and
national training in assessment and diagnosis, especially in evaluations
with students with learning disabilities. As a visiting instructor and
adjunct professor, he teaches classes in abnormal psychology,
assessment, disabilities, counseling, and development. Steven
Hardy-Braz served as a Site Coordinator for Riverside Publishing during
the standardization of the SB5, consulted on the development of the
test, and authored sections of the manual as it pertains to individuals
who are deaf or hard of hearing. He has also worked on the
standardization and modifications used with other widely used
instruments of intelligence. Steven Hardy-Braz consults with test
publishers and educational systems throughout our country as well as
schools in South Africa, England, and Portugal.
