Dear Family and Friends,

Penny Williams was a beautiful young woman, full of energy and excitement
about her upcoming graduation in Psychology from the University of Utah.
Penny, who was deaf, worked hard to accomplish her dream but, despite her
efforts and success in college, died shortly before graduation a victim
domestic violence.

Since graduating with my master's degree from the College of Social Work, I
have worked to better the lives of individuals. I am currently the Domestic
Violence Administrator for the Division of Child and Family Services, Salt
Lake City Valley Region, Salt Lake City, UT. In this position, I have seen a
great need for those who are to receive more and better services,
particularly from social workers who can sign and communicate with them
directly.

Because of this, I have committed to establish the Penny Williams Endowed
Scholarship in the College of Social Work. The scholarship will be awarded
to a student committed to the deaf and hard of hearing community, someone
with skill in American Sign Language (ASL) and who will commit to spending a
minimum of two years with the deaf and hard of hearing. Preference will be
given to a deaf and hard of hearing student, but any person who is fluent in
ASL and can pass a proficiency test at the completion of their master's
degree would be eligible.

I am asking you to help me reach my goal of providing an education to
students who can overcome this shortage of qualified ASL Social Workers and
thereby better serve the deaf and hard of hearing community. Please send
