Deaf Wellness Center Career Opportunity

[Note, this is not the official University of Rochester description for
this employment position. Please visit the University's website for the
official job descriptions and application information:

There is an opening for a full-time, master's level clinician in the
Deaf Wellness Center, a program of the Department of Psychiatry at the
University of Rochester (NY) Medical Center. Our preference is for a
clinical social worker. That position requires an MSW degree from an
accredited social work program and certification by the State of New
York within one year of employment. Individuals with a master's degree
in another mental health field will be considered if a suitable social
worker candidate is not identified.

The Deaf Wellness Center (DWC) is an internationally renown clinical
service, research and training program. We have received over $3.8M in
grant funding, published 67 articles and book chapters, and serve
hundreds of deaf individuals annually. A career at the DWC offers a
place on the cutting edge of several areas in the deafness field, in
particular, mental health, sign language interpreting, and healthcare.
The DWC family is a close-knit, creative group of professionals with an
intense commitment to excellence in clinical practice, research, and
teaching. All DWC staff participate in all three of these focal
activity areas. We work amidst a psychiatry department and a medical
school that also have international reputations for innovation and
excellence. We are located in Rochester, NY known worldwide as a center
of opportunity and quality of life for individuals who are deaf. Why
should you consider a career at the DWC? "Because it is here that you
will do your best work."

The current open position primarily involves the provision of direct and
collateral mental health services to deaf individuals and their families
(all ages, but primarily adults). As appropriate to their education and
experience, the candidate will render the following clinical services
(independently or with supervision): evaluation and diagnosis;
treatment planning; case management; individual, couples, and family
psychotherapy; "manualized" and other evidence-based therapies such as
Dialectical Behavior Therapy; and group psychotherapy. The candidate
will be expected to engage in continuing education to enhance his or her
ability to provide these services independent of supervision. Some
teaching duties (e.g., supervision of trainees, and in-services and
workshops on Deaf culture, deafness and mental health, etc.) are also
involved. Participation in research and other scholarly activities that
are ongoing at the Deaf Wellness Center will be expected. Occasional
travel may be expected in this position, typically associated with
teaching and scholarship activities or local travel necessary to provide
continuity of care to patients. The candidate must be interested in a
long-term career in an academically-oriented clinical service setting.
The approximate time/duty distribution is as follows: direct and
indirect clinical services (90%), teaching (3%), participation in DWC
research and scholarship activities (7%). This time distribution is
flexible and would change when the employee's interests and various
funding opportunities allow greater participation in scholarship and
teaching activities.

The salary is competitive and benefits include health, dental,
retirement, and tuition benefits.
