In an inpatient study by Black and Glickman, they found a distinction
between the diagnostic breakdown of the deaf and hearing patients.

Hearing patients were more likely to have a psychotic disorder (88.9%),
than deaf patients (28%).

The deaf patients were much more likely to be diagnosed with mood,
anxiety, developmental, or personality disorders.

The reason for this is suggested by the authors "the typical deaf unit
referral is not a person displaying obvious psychotic symptoms but
rather a person with a history of developmental and personality problems
displaying dangerous behaviors. These patients often are referred due to
incidents of violence to self or others, at least some of which appears
due to the inadequate development of language and social skills."
